Your weekly ticket to droneland. Field recordings of waters, machines, subways, drums, frogs, ice, etc, and then those same recordings spindled, folded, or mutilated. Don't worry, that ticket will still get you through the phantom tollbooth.

This week's Dronecast is a recording I made in August 2008 at the sound installation "Playing the Building" by David Byrne. The installation was produced by Creative Time and housed in the old Battery Maritime Building, a gorgeous and partially-derelict ferry terminal next to the Staten Island Ferry. Check out Byrne's page about the project for video, more recordings, etc. The installation ran from May 31, 2008 to August 24, 2008. The day I was there, some Brazilian TV star was running around in there with a film crew. Visitors took a spot in line and waited a turn at the keyboard. You can hear the breaks between players, and each new player's approach in the recording. |
The organ was modified with a mechanism inside that played the building via pneumatic tubes.
The pneumatic tubes triggered sounding mechanisms like these, attached to pillars, skylight, pipes, etc. throughout the the building.
