Listener comments!

  11:08pm
Sybil:

Good evening all!

What is this song? I love it!
  11:12pm
Laurie:

I had a fairly gnarly cold recently and discovered there was nothing recorded on my DVR that I felt like watching. I was thisclose to watching Elvis Costello's talk show on demand, but I decided to switch over to VH11 instead and watch a rerun of the Rock of Love Bus series premiere. I think I made the right decision.
  11:13pm
Joe:

Hmm, looks like Evan left you hanging.

on the Telephone.
  11:13pm
efd:

hi Sybil! That was Telephone, described by our own Joe McGasko as "France's Rolling Stones."
  11:14pm
john:

Ric Menck is God. Well, God-like. Goddish?
  11:15pm
Sybil:

Joe gets me back for last week.

I'm trying to Google Telephone. You can imagine how that's working out.
  11:17pm
john:

Maybe with the appropriate accents aigus? téléphone. And type it with a slightly nasal intonation.
  11:18pm
HotRod:

uhuh,,,
  11:18pm
E.L.:

Did you try looking under "France's + Rolling + Stones + Telephone + Band + 70s, starting with?"
  11:18pm
?:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A9l%C3%A9phone

Yes.. it actually works. No, I don't use tinyurl.
  11:20pm
efd:

Laurie, I think you made the right decision as well.

I'll talk to you just after midnight.
  11:20pm
Sybil:

Thanks, ?.
  11:22pm
E.L.:

For anyone who caught the end of The Best Show Tonight:

  11:23pm
cheri:

hiya evan--- happy 09,,,peace!!!=)
  11:24pm
efd:

E.L. doesn't use tinyurl either, apparently.
  11:24pm
Parick in Oregon:

Nice stache! Almost as good as your mix. Almost.
  11:26pm
Joe:

Spectacular!

Also,I think I like this song better with the reverb-sax.
  11:26pm
efd:

hi Cheri, John, Joe. E.L., that pic is hilarious
  11:26pm
Laurie:

I teared up after reading an X-Men story just now. Should I be ashamed of myself?

Also, for the longest time, I wanted to know what Tin Yurl was. I'm sometimes slow.
  11:27pm
Sybil:

My cat loves this song.
  11:27pm
john:

Scruffy The Cat! First heard on WNYU. By me, anyway.
  11:27pm
cheri:

evan please spin more 70s tunes,,,thanx
  11:28pm
Amanda:

Is she a Russian Blue cat? ZING CAT-FANCIER JOKE
  11:28pm
Joe:

Tom doesn't like these guys? This song is great!

I guess Tom just doesn't like alot of things.
  11:29pm
Sybil:

Laurie, anyone who doesn't tear up after reading X-Men has a heart of stone.

And Tin Yurl was a band out of Akron. I'm pretty sure about that one.
  11:30pm
Sybil:

Yes, she is, Amanda.
  11:31pm
E.L.:

Hey Amanda! If you know any more good cat jokes I might be able to offer you a staff writing position. It pays nothing but it has even fewer benefits.
  11:31pm
Joe:

I just read Watchmen... it made me cry. Cry tears of sheer awesome.
  11:32pm
Laurie:

For the record, it was the one where Nightcrawler uses the Danger Room to generate a facsimile of the now dead Shadowkitty so he can hug her and tell her he misses her. Sniff.
  11:34pm
john:

I thought you meant you just called an easy pop-up to second base a mammoth home run.
  11:35pm
Joe:

I hate John Sterling.

"It is high.. it is far.. IT IS....!!!!.... caught by the centerfielder."
  11:35pm
E.L.:

Concentrate EFD! Remember your training!
  11:36pm
cheri:

efd--did you anything terrific to ring in the new year?
  11:36pm
john:

Of course, with Cano at second base, there are no easy pop-ups.
  11:36pm
Laurie:

I must also say: I lol'd, Amanda. I thank you.
  11:38pm
billy:

i need baseball to start soon, man!......you should play some Grand Mal....i picked their album from 2006...its a great great album....have a great 09'
  11:38pm
Sybil:

I need to invent a drink called "Blue Russian". In honor of my cat.

Less Sterling and more Scully, plz.
  11:39pm
Joe:

But... Cano can do!
  11:39pm
Amanda:

Whoa, Sybil! Whoa, Laurie!

They are cute. My family has Chartreux which look similar.

E.L., SIGN ME UP! The position sounds FUR-rociously prestigious! Eh? Eh?
  11:40pm
john:

Yeah. He Can-not. I miss Bob Murphy.
  11:40pm
Joe:

Another relevant Sterlingism - "It's a bash from the 'stache"
  11:42pm
efd:

oh boy, what pandora's box have I opened!
  11:43pm
billy:

RICKEY HENDERSON!!!!!
  11:45pm
Sybil:

Yesterday there was an article in the Times, comparing Henderson and Manny Ramirez.

I need baseball.
  11:46pm
billy:

comparing their wacky personalities?
  11:46pm
john:

Comparing them how? They're both unsigned for next year, of course.
  11:47pm
Sal:

Funk I'm in NY. Listening live for a change
  11:47pm
Sybil:

You got it, Billy. And that they are shoo-ins for the HOF.
  11:47pm
billy:

Rickey will sign first
  11:47pm
Laurie:

That little Bush-ism reminds me. Should I be honest with my boss and tell her I need to take Jan. 20th off because I want to go to an Inauguration Party? Or should I make something up? Or should I wait 'til Tuesday and call in sick or something? I called in gay last month. I'm pretty sure she's still pissed at me over that one, even if I did explain to her a month in advance that I would not be coming into work that day so I could be part of a civil rights movement or some such.
  11:48pm
efd:

hey Sal! great to hear from you... how long are you here for? drop me an email.
  11:48pm
Sybil:

Here ya go. I know about tinyurl, but I'm too lazy...

http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/11/the-similarities-between-rickey-and-manny/
  11:49pm
efd:

clearly there is a demand within the efd community for a hot stove show. I'll start working on that right after next week's Inauguration special.
  11:49pm
Sal:

Here until Friday and then I'm done. I'll update you in an email.
  11:50pm
john:

I think that two year deal from the Doggers is the only hard offer Manny's had so far. At least as of a couple days ago. 32 days til pitchers and catchers.
  11:51pm
cheri:

evan--if i'm one of your fave comenters please play more tunes from the 70s,,thanx=)
  11:51pm
billy:

efd....i gotta say...baseball goes really well with rock and roll....i often mute the tv and listen to tunes during the game.....totally vibe out
  11:52pm
Joe:

I would've called in gay, but nobody would've believed me...

If I were you, I'd call in sick, but use slydial.
  11:52pm
Sybil:

Supposedly the Giants are seriously interested. Which, if it happened, would give me an excuse to visit my brother a lot.
  11:53pm
john:

Scott Ostler in the SF Chronicle yesterday, pushing the case for signing him: "Ramirez is expensive, but so is sucking."
  11:55pm
E.L.:

Maybe I'm the last person to find this site or maybe someone is inventing things as fast I can imagine them: www.gianturl.com.
Am I in Bed Time Stories or Inkheart?
  11:56pm
Joe:

That is the funniest thing I've ever seen.
  11:56pm
efd:

Cheri, even favorite commenters have limited influence.
  11:57pm
Sybil:

E. L., that is too funny!
  11:58pm
Sybil:

Especially the copyright notice.
  12:00am
E.L.:

Zing!
  12:00am
Laurie:

I had a feeling you were going to do that!
  12:01am
efd:

you know we love you, Laurie!
  12:01am
Laurie:

I've been zung.
  12:02am
Spoony:

Oh Laurie. You're a good sport.
  12:03am
cheri:

g'nite all!!!!
  12:04am
E.L.:

'Tis true, Laurie is a very good sport and well liked by all.
  12:04am
Sybil:

bye, cheri!
  12:08am
Laurie:

I saw Pink Reason recently!! The long-haired fella from the Electric Bunnies and some other local band comprised of 2/3 of Electric Bunnies called something like "You Melted My Sunglasses" or maybe "We Melted Your Sunglasses," but melting sunglasses is definitely part of it. Anyhoodle, I don't know if he's part of the band, but he played with them, and the lights were turned off, and people shined little flashlights toward the stage, and it was really good and spacey. I liked it! One of the Jacuzzi Boys handed me the flashlight he was using, but I had to return the flashlight afterward. If I remember, they played a bill with Times New Viking as part of this Art Basel thing sponsored by Converse.

It was a weird week.
  12:12am
Laurie:

I'm going to guess that inauguration concert featuring H.R. isn't an official thing.

Also, whenever I think of H.R., I fondly recall the rumor that he's secretly some rich man's boyfriend or something. I don't know if it's true, or if it's just one of those rumors we like to make up about homophobic people. You know, because all homophobes are closet cases or something.

Oh my god, I think there's speed in this cold medicine. I had to show the pharmacist my ID and sign my name before I could buy it.
  12:13am
Joe:

Doesn't mean there's speed -in- it, it means you can make speed -from- it

For directions how, just shoot me an email!
  12:13am
Sybil:

Pseudephedrine, probs. You could make meth from it.
  12:14am
Joe:

Or, just check out this site I found:

  12:14am
john:

If it took four seconds to type three paragraphs, it's got speed in it.
  12:14am
Sybil:

Oh, Joe outtypes me again.

So, should we pool our resources and make some money?
  12:16am
Amanda:

I know I signed a Facebook petition to get Bad Brains to play the inauguration itself, and I am unhappy it did not pass.
  12:23am
cheri:

g'nite efd,,,have a happy week,,
  12:24am
efd:

goodnight Cheri!
  12:26am
Laurie:

Evan, you have some funny commenteers, if I may say so myself.
  12:30am
Sybil:

Storied, but unsung, hmm....

I've got to get the guys at Language Log on this one.
  12:31am
Michael from the Left Coast:

So does the John Carter anthology have "Brown and Porter's Meat Exporter's Lorry" by Herman's Hermits?
You know of course the Ivy League sing on Can't Explain by the Who.
  12:34am
Sybil:

Thanks, MftLC!!!
  12:35am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Carter is a major hero--he sang Winchester Cathedral and wrote "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius among many.
  12:37am
john:

Carter also wrote "My World Fell Down," covered by Sagittarius on the stunningly gorgeous Present Tense album. That and Beach Baby is pretty much everything I know about John Carter.
  12:37am
john:

Beat me to it, Michael!
  12:39am
Sybil:

Evan, you have some knowledgeable commenteers, if I may say so myself. :-P
  12:39am
efd:

yeah, i think i had a passing awareness of the Sagittarius connection, but it was really "Beach Baby" and "Sound Of Summer" that sucked me in. Thanks for the additional info Michael and John!
  12:40am
efd:

Sybil, you're telling me! I love it.
  12:40am
john:

Loving this Popguns track...sort of like the Shop Assistants if they didn't record underwater.

Pleasure's all mine. Any time I can work Curt Boettcher into a conversation, I'm there.
  12:41am
Joe:

This popguns is -so- gooooood
  12:43am
Sybil:

underwater... so that's how they do it!
  12:44am
john:

Well, I'm not entirely sure what the Shop Assistants recorded under. Could have been Jello.
  12:46am
Sybil:

More proof that 1977 wasn't altogether the awesome year I thought it was at the time.
  12:47am
Amanda:

Oh Shaun Cassidy, born so late.

Hey all, it is my birthday this week. Hope it's not gauche to mention that.
  12:49am
Sybil:

Happy advance birthday, Amanda!
  12:49am
Joe:

Yes, gauche. Gauche and unbecoming of a lady such as yourself.
  12:51am
Sybil:

You got something against lefthanders?
  12:53am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Yeah--Thomas Function!
  12:54am
Joe:

Wow... I got etymology pwnd.

Happy birthday, 'manda
  12:55am
Amanda:

OH YOU GUYS. Thanks. :)

No, Sybil, I am half left-handed myself!

Thomas Function YAAAAY.
  12:56am
john:

And quite dextrously too, Joe!
  12:59am
Sybil:

I myself am ambigaucherous.

Yes, I know that's an unhappy melding of Latin and Greek. But no one but this audience would ever notice!
  1:00am
Sybil:

It's the Stainless Steel Rat!

Or not.
  1:01am
john:

Actually I'm not sure there's any Greek in it, Sybil. What am I missing?
  1:04am
Joe:

JAKE ONE what the deal what the deal
  1:05am
Sybil:

Oh, man, John, you're right. No Greek. Whatever puzzle here, is not that one.

I've got to go review my (linguistic) roots. Just, not tonight.
  1:07am
Joe:

Actually, wikipedia says "ambi-" is "proto-celtic"... not to... you know... be a jerk or anything.

Also, I absolutely cannot wait to drink beer all day on saturday then go see this band. Can-not-wait.
  1:08am
Joe:

I mean WOOOOO!, you guys. Seriously.
  1:10am
john:

Ambo is Latin for "both."
  1:12am
efd:

and Street for "ambulance"
  1:13am
Laurie:

Okay, I'm actually proud of this funny I just wrote. It was in response to a whiny film student complaining about how a piece of crap movie got greenlit. He does this all the time. I'm sorry your shitty film school movie isn't getting bought, jerkface, we're tired of hearing it. "I hope there's a sequel, and I hope it's called My Bloody Valentine II: Loveless."

On second thought, maybe Loveless should be the final part of a My Bloody Valentine triology. The sequel, then, should be My Bloody Valentine II: Isn't Anything, and the tagline will be "but filled with RAGE." Or something like that.

I'm going to go edit my post on that messageboard.
  1:13am
efd:

Joe, I hope you're taking public transit or have a designated driver!

Sorry to get all grownuppy on you...
  1:18am
john:

ταχος is Ancient Greek for "speed."
  1:24am
Joe:

WFMU: DJ's that care.

No worries, we'll be at Down the Hatch until at least 7, looks like an awkward train-ride but a nice walk over to alphabet city. Unless you can bum 5 dudes a ride?
  1:31am
efd:

I care, but not enough to try to cram five of you in my car. If the weather predictions hold true a walk of any distance on Saturday night should sober you right up, in any case.
  1:37am
Joe:

FUCK! Not again! This is the third consecutive time it's snowed the weekend I've made city plans.

I'll have to hail me one of those super-cabs...
  1:37am
Michael from the Left coast:

The white hills have done it--they've put me into a stupor--good night y'all
  1:38am
Joe:

David Shire: famous scorer of Talia Shire! Let us all be jealous for a moment...
  1:39am
efd:

i don't think it's supposed to snow, it's just supposed to be super-cold.

goodnight, Michael!
