A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  11:06am
Erella:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Bragg
Here it is:
Hearing DJ John Peel mention on-air that he was hungry, Bragg rushed to the BBC with a mushroom biryani, so Peel played a song from Life's a Riot, although at the wrong speed (since the 12" LP was, unconventionally, cut to play at 45rpm).[8] Peel insisted he would have played the song even without the biryani, and he later played it at the correct speed.
It wasn't a sandwich, it was a biryani.

Bob:

Dear Trouble,

You charaterization of the Lillie Ledbedder act was not quite accurate. Perhaps a lawyer or labor activist responded earlier, but gender-based pay discrimination is already illegal. The LL act is to overturn a procedural ruling of the Bush Supreme Court which says that the time limit for filing legal action claiming gender pay discrimination (I think it is two years, but I'm not sure) is from the time the pay discrimination started. Usually, pay violations are considered a continuing violation that recurs with every pay check. So when LL filed her original suit, she could go retroactive for two years from the date she filed the suit. In her case, since she did not discover that she was being discriminated against for more than the time limit in the law after the discrimination began, the Court threw out her suit.

The act, if passed by Congress, will re-affirm that pay discrimination is a contiuing violation.

Apologies for the typos and the delay in commenting. I'm trying to get out of the house and everyone knows how difficult that can be.

BTW, I find it amusing and interesting coincidental that GWB's last day in office in the national holiday for MLK's birthday. You can be sure that GWB's birthday will never be a national holiday.

bob, i appreciate your clarification of the fine points of the lilly ledbetter bill. But if women can not file a grievance at any time then the equality of pay is not guaranteed.

this appears to be a progessive group of folks, so here's an online petition to have Obama appoint a Secretary to the Arts. It seems legit:

Hey what was that song that wasn't garland green yet after musee mechanique, sounded like Tim Buckley with dulcimer noise etc
  11:22am
www.Erella.net:

It would be nice to have a secretary for the Arts but really, do you think a petition would make Obama consider such an idea? I don't know if these things really do anything other than con us into thinking that we have a voice.
  11:24am
annie:

dale, i will counter that with this:
http://www.organicconsumers.org/vilsack.cfm

if he is nominated, which seems likely, unfortunately, the future of our food safety is even more in question. and as an aside www.change.gov is great way to voice yourself too

i haven't seen the point in years. it was always on televsion in the early 70s but disappeared from consciousness. I'll see if i can order it at blockbuster.
  11:25am
Erella:

Sorry to sound discouraging there. It would be a fantastic idea, And maybe that is the gift that Obama has given Americans, it is the concept of hope and imagination. Obama is the first american politician I can imagine in an art gallery or buying a cd for his own pleasure.
I think that is monumentally significant.

I just watched a CBC-TV documentary (I live in toronto, Canada) about plastic. They made a scary point:
The guy asked you to think about every bit of plastic you've ever seen in your lifetime (they showed images of coffee cups and hair dryers and bad old computers and phones and 60's chairs...)
They then told us that every bit of that plastic is still here on earth.
Then they said that plastic is looking more like food and food is looking more like plastic. It was fascinating to see how little pellets of plastic looks like plankton and the fish eat it, and there are islands the size of england in the ocean, made of discarded plastic.
Very sobering dcc.

Get em Annie...
I like that quote Erella: "Then they said that plastic is looking more like food and food is looking more like plastic."
  11:37am
dale:

i take my recycling to the transfer station (dump) every other weekend and we have a 50 gallon rubbermaid can full of HDPE, styrofoam and tin, mostly from food packaging. and we eat no processed food either. The paper pile gets smaller, though, since the Times jacked up the price to a dollar and a half. erella, any good memories of Tiny Talent Time or Party Game?
  11:38am
dale:

sorry - if it's in a tin, it's processed somehow...
  11:39am
annie:

erella, it's a pleasure to have your voice here in the sandbox

Ted from Baltimore: Of course "shite" doesn't count, Ted! I mean, why not? None that the FCC's morality corps does make sense; why should that?
  11:41am
annie:

trouble!!! i forgot to tell you. joe mcgasko has bird vinyl i sent down there. ask him and see if you will be able to wrest it from him. i did put your name on the list next to the name if the album.

Cecile:

cooooooooooooooooooooold. too coooooooooooooooooooooooold.

If dave is from MN, it's -20 without windchill.
  11:44am
Ellen:

Trouble- listening from the Museum of Natural History in NYC where you would have a hay day with all the drawers of stuffed bird specimens. Some are very very old. You would like...although I'm a fan of the alive sort...
  11:46am
Erella:

Haha Dale, yes I remember them both (perhaps a bit too much). Scary.

Toronto has a pretty green Mayor. Our compost gets picked up at our houses every week and the curbside recycling program is super advanced.
Now there is a new bylaw that all stores have to charge extra for plastic bags. It all helps.
When I go to visit my friends in Michigan and see no mandated recycle programs I find it surprising and kind of retro. "Oh, look a No Smoking section in the family restaurant".

Yergh but it is soooooo cold here today. A million below zero, at least.
  11:48am
dale:

Trouble, "Never Marry a Railroad Man" is a great SB song, too...
  11:48am
annie:

erella i have fond memories of Garbagio's in eugene. waaaayyy ahead of their time.. and people actually enjoyed washing cans to be in the loop on recycling.. we have gotten way too lazy..
  11:48am
Ellen:

I wish we had compost pick-up in NYC! No one has backyards...it only makes sense!
  11:48am
trouble:

i was under the understanding that if it wasn't U.S. english it was ok. hope that didn't bother...
  11:49am
Cecile:

Erella, Michigan does have a very good bottle deposit program. I bought myself many mac 'n' cheese dinners with the beer bottles lying around when I was a tad.

PMD:

I hear your love buzz. So sorry I missed this morning! Darn work... And can;t keep up with the comments... But I'll go back and read.
  11:50am
GP:

Ellen..did you ever read those crime novels by Doug Preston and Lincoln Childs? A bunch of their scenarios take place in the Museum of Natural History...pretty good, entertaining reads. One of the authors used to work there or something.
  11:50am
Ellen:

Yes...Nirvana cover...sweet hahahha
  11:51am
trouble:

I love the birds at the natl history museum
  11:51am
Ellen:

GP- no, I haven't, but I found the book, "Bankers, Bones and Beetles" about the museum to be really interesting. It's a very mysterious place to work for sure. Magical!
  11:52am
kent goldings:

trouble,
i've heard 'feck' on billy jam's show, so i think 'shite' is okay...
  11:53am
GP:

I love to visit...the history and the architecture is amazing. Check out those books if you get a chance. THey have a whole series involving Agent Pendergast chracter as an FBI agent.

Take care.all.off to a meeting now
  11:54am
Lou:

sending you some red sox love
  11:54am
Ellen:

Trouble- Me too....

The first time I got a tour of the ornithology department ( I work in entomology), there was a man doing some water color paintings of some of the stuffed birds- like for book illustrations or something. They were so beautiful. He made them look so alive...
  11:54am
jk:

love buzz isn't a nirvana cover, that's the original.

this is a great version of nonono. love the show
  11:54am
dale:

ellen, i've started seeing electric undercounter composters (look like a little dishwasher). The good is no smelly garbage and compost. The bad is it uses electricity - most likely coal fired around here.
  11:55am
pinky aoki:

Fab!! dig one more 60's Dutch garage track please,"Russian spy and I" by THE HUNTERS!!
  11:57am
annie:

trouble, thanks for the fabulous show today...welcome back erella
  11:57am
Ellen:

Thanks, Dale. I think I know the kind you're talking about. I still think the city should invest in public compost pick up. I think those composters cost a couple hundred bucks and I just don't know what you'd even do with it without a backyard, ya know?
  11:58am
Ted from Baltimore:

"Feck" always reminds me of David Sedaris's story about finding the poorly edited porn novel when he was a kid
  11:58am
Ike:

I love that Passion Pit song and the JAMs (a.k.a. the KLF, which stands for Kopyright Liberation Front). I don't know why they abbreviated Justified Ancients of Mu Mu as "JAMs" but they did, apparently. What wankers. But great ones.
