Listener comments!

  11:06pm
Jessica:

Wooooooooo...
  11:08pm
wonder woman:

hey there evan i'm filling in for cheri tonite.
  11:09pm
Jessica:

I think that might be my favorite Start with the 70s yet. I don't think I've heard that track before, but just feeling that bassline from a room or two away you know: Ooh, Stranglers!
  11:09pm
John, Lou, and Nico:

Didn't Tom just say you were reuniting The Velvet Underground tonight on the show? ( <--- stirring up trouble)
  11:10pm
efd:

Jessica, that is the 'BARRACUDA BASS' sound, as it says on the label. Glad you liked it!

Wonder Woman, glad to see that my regular listeners/commenteers are getting fill-ins when they can't make it.
  11:10pm
Brian:

Starting with these two tracks, I feel like there are friends I should be calling up to listen...
  11:12pm
Joe:

I have several people fill in for me when I can't make it. However they still post under "Joe".

So, like, every time I was annoying instead of funny, it was definitely someone else.
  11:12pm
wonder woman:

i hear she speaks very highly of you evan!!
  11:16pm
efd:

thanks for that clarification, "Joe."
  11:21pm
wonder woman:

efd i must apoligize for leaving the post board but i'll still be listening & cheri will reutrn next week,,see you 'round
  11:23pm
Amanda:

Was Joe ever annoying? I must say I can't recall it. Trailmix yay.
  11:26pm
stingy d:

i fell off my bike. i think i broke my wrist.
  11:27pm
choci:

ouch!
  11:28pm
Joe:

God I love Hot Chocolate.
  11:30pm
Joe:

Hot Chocolate bed music would be -spectacular-.

But if you decide against it, I've got a really good snippet from The Guess Who that you should check out.
  11:34pm
larsbars:

What's your background music??
  11:35pm
dustin:

lords of brooklyn
  11:38pm
matt:

how about that other Hot Chocolate song, 'I believe in Knuckles'....
  11:38pm
larsbars:

Thanks!
  11:38pm
Joe:

That is a spectacular logo they've got.
  11:38pm
dustin:

"saturday night" is the song i believe
  11:39pm
efd:

thanks, dustin. larsbars, it's a loop from the song "Saturday Night" by Lordz (yes, they spell it with a 'z') of Brooklyn.
  11:39pm
efd:

on the money, dustin, thanks again!
  11:40pm
Joe:

But it's -actually- a sample from American Woman. Oh yes it is.
  11:42pm
wonder woman:

ohh evan i was just thinking if you could find my theme song please play it tonite?? i'd be uterly greatful thanks efd,,
  11:42pm
dustin:

ahh yes, the 'z' (i stand corrected, as the song goes)
  11:43pm
john:

For what it's worth, which isn't much, it always sounded like a lift from American Woman to me too.
  11:44pm
efd:

oh yes, they totally sample "American Woman."
  11:45pm
Joe:

Though it vastly improves on the original, with the addition of a gruff sounding Brooklinite going "Yeaaaah do DAT"
  11:46pm
Joe:

And I'm not even being sarcastic.
  11:47pm
john:

I don't know; much of my late grade school years were spent with Best of the Guess Who blaring away. Come to think of it that may be why I probably haven't played one of their records since about 1976.
  11:47pm
efd:

wonder woman, i'm almost afraid to ask because it seems the answer must be obvious, but- what is your theme song?
  11:47pm
dustin:

thats cool they covered this, i love this song
  11:50pm
stingy d:

it rained all day. then my pants ripped near the butt pocket. then i fell off my bike and ruined it. and somehwere in the frackas my wrist and hands are in enough pain to make me sad. thankfully i like these songs. where's percocet when i need it?
  11:50pm
wonder woman:

efd from the tv series
  11:51pm
Joe:

Oh no, I'm not slamming the Guess Who. I saw Randy Bachman IN CONCERT, for crying out loud. But yes... I think the term "played out" could apply.
  11:53pm
larsbars:

Yeah, you're right about American Woman. I like it.
  11:57pm
wonder woman:

efd if you can't find it i understand,,i never miss your show evan it's really great,,,,well i'll bb during the summer,,i hope you'll still be here,,,see ya,,g'nite
  12:00am
Laurie:

Bobby!!
  12:02am
toni daytona:

i too will be back in the sumer see yall then
  12:06am
Laurie:

I'm pretty sure the video for this Louis XIV video was directed by a pornographer buddy of mine, Eon McKai. No, not that Ian MacKaye.
  12:08am
efd:

i actually meant to play a different song off that CD... the track listing on the woman's back always throws me off.
  12:09am
Joe:

Someday, my life will be interesting enough for me to use the phrase "a pornographer buddy of mine."

I hope.
  12:11am
eastahpeeps:

F yeah!
  12:14am
Amanda:

I just hope to do more of my reading off of the backs of naked people.
  12:17am
Laurie:

I just watched the video he shot for Louis XIV to confirm that it was boobs only, nothing below the belt. It is. It's pretty softcore, but I will not link to it since it is NSFW for most people. Though it is after work hours.

One of the naked girls in the video, the prettiest one, went on to become an au pair. For real.

And my life isn't that interesting. But I think I missed my chance to actually be in one of his pornos. Oh well, never say never, right?
  12:19am
robroy:

can people not post with internet speak!
  12:20am
Laurie:

lol
  12:22am
uh-lo-ha!:

cheap wine and ownership of a rat.
  12:22am
C:

Laurie, your grammar and punctuation seem impeccable to me
  12:23am
bob:

aww god, grammar nazi!
  12:23am
Danne D:

Hey EFD! FWIW, I had a college roommate who listened to Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" constantly (the funny thing is that with time and not a constant barrage I see it for the masterpiece that it is). Of course I was listenting to shit like The Nice at the time so I don't exactly have range to talk ;)

Btw, Trader Funk I should protest those league trades since you're like the smartest dude in the league and must be ripping those other dudes off (even though my very limited baseball knowledge makes me wholly unqualified to evaluate said trades :)
  12:26am
Danne D:

Oh I believe the proper phrasing is: "I humbly request that posters please refrain from posting in obscure internet-specific vernacular. Thank you."

To this I says LOLZ WHat3v!

Just joshin' btw, all.
  12:26am
Joe:

In my experience, the jump from pretty au pair to topless girl is a relatively short one.
  12:27am
carlo rossi:

i like big muff solos!
  12:28am
matt:

a bit of the guitar sound in that last 'Gemini' song sounded like the guitar in 'You make Lovin' Fun'...
  12:30am
Laurie:

I just had to lure my cat out of the closet with greenies. Works every time.
  12:31am
dave:

oh, MAN do i love this soul asylum song.
  12:31am
lego:

if you had a rat, you'd realize a new way to lure an animal out with greenies.
  12:32am
Joe:

I was shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that Soul Asylum was actually good at one point.
  12:33am
efd:

ok Dave (and Joe), I will rescind my apology.
  12:33am
really:

buy a third eye blind album.
  12:34am
dave:

boy howdy, were they ever.

but yeah, i can see how you might find that just a LITTLE bit surprising.
  12:35am
Joe:

I grew up with Runaway Train, man.

RUNAWAY TRAIN.
  12:36am
dave:

i am so.
SO.
sorry.
  12:36am
mr h:

thanx for playing King Khan!!!!
  12:37am
pissypants:

all's i have to say is: peter hammill.
  12:38am
Joe:

It's cool. Little bit of therapy goes a long way.
  12:39am
Laurie:

King Khan are so much fun live.
  12:40am
Joe:

Oh and Davies I'm going to thank you again for snagging to Obits... so pumped for that show.
  12:40am
Laurie:

Evan, you may be interested to know that King Khan brought the Jacuzzi Boys onstage when they played the Vagabond here in Miami last month. The show went on 'til well into 4 am.
  12:41am
dave:

just this weekend i was sitting at the next table from some guy at a restaurant who was talking with some authority about how TERRIBLY difficult it was for dave pirner to deal with the success of 'runaway train' and to go to the white house and meet the president and, i dunno, get strung out on smack and sleep with winona ryder and the myriad other horrors he endured.
  12:42am
Joe:

That might be the funniest story I've heard all week.

Wow. Just wow.
  12:46am
robroy:

i don't know what to say...
  12:50am
Amanda:

The poor man! And none of those missing kids from the video were found, either. (Actually, they might have been, I don't know.)
  12:51am
dave:

the lesson i got from it was that if you're looking to impress a dining companion and you've got nothing, you can always strip-mine "behind the music" for conversational source material.
  12:52am
drunken:

sheedadaboobah
  12:53am
Dean Rispler:

EVAN! Thanks for playing Kraftwerk. I love them. Are you going to any of The Mummies gigs? I hope to see you there.
  12:53am
inE:

PERFECT!
  12:58am
inE:

do you know the "coconut" version of this song?
is fantastic..
lots of love
  12:59am
Dean Rispler:

Coconut version? I want to hear that!
  12:59am
Andy in Iowa City:

Great set you've got going. Thanks for the music!
  1:00am
efd:

inE, I don't know the "coconut" version, but now I'm intrigued.

Hi Dean, good to hear from you! Stingy, sorry to hear about your fall/wrist! Hi to everyone else I haven't been able to reply to over the past 30mins or so.
  1:00am
G.:

Moosik ov de svirs!!! voohoo!!!!!
  1:01am
Laurie:

I think inE is referring to Señor Coconut album Baile Alemán.
  1:02am
Joe:

I was also hearing "Sviss"

what does that say about us?
  1:03am
G.:

I was gonna say we were seriously edging toward Klaus Nomi there, yep...
  1:04am
inE:

yes. Señor Coconut
  1:04am
Dean Rispler:

You can talk about Anvil - is that what the Metal On Metal reference is about? Why can't you talk about the Anvil movie, Evan. I can't wait to see it.
  1:04am
Laurie:

If I ever get married, Allen Oldies will be my wedding band. Or the wedding's off.
  1:06am
Laurie:

Evan, I'll take note of these dates in my iCalendar.
  1:08am
inE:

cumbias? great
  1:10am
efd:

Dean, it could be seen as a conflict of interest since my employer is promoting it. But I can talk about it all I want on Facebook! :)
  1:12am
Dean Rispler:

I understand. I bought Anvil's Metal On Metal in '82. I was a 12 year old metal nerd. Now I'm a 38 year old metal nerd. Though I like a lot of other things. Can't wait for that movie. I slept on it when it premiered at BAM.
  1:16am
The Man:

Conflicts of Interest are only bad when someone other than me benefits.
  1:16am
C:

oh man, i was thinking the same thing EFD! television guitar
  1:16am
Joe:

SO CLICHE EVAN
  1:17am
Joe:

Kidding! Kidding.
  1:17am
efd:

Joe, that was one of your fill-ins, right? ;)
  1:19am
G.:

That was definitely annoying fake Joe. :-P
  1:21am
Joe:

Hey, if I had an FMU show, I'd play "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and just let people DEAL with it, man.\

I am not even joking. Good songs is good songs! And that, sir, is a good song.

So is this one.
  1:22am
Amanda:

This song embarrasses me because of a Facebook-related story that is probably too long to relate here. But yes, it is good!
  1:24am
Dean Rispler:

Wow! This version of Frankenstein kicks ass! A high school band nonetheless.
  1:25am
G.:

In the late 70s people used to stress test their speakers on the synth solo in the original version of this. Someone actually blew a set out in my dorm doing it. I wonder if the marching band version would work.
  1:27am
dave:

when your high school has "dorsey" in the name, there's a certain amount of pressure on your jazz ensemble's horn section.
  1:28am
Joe:

I went to John Phillip Sousa elementary school.

Our band was terrible.
  1:28am
Amanda:

Hahahaha!
  1:29am
dave:

i just sets 'em up. Joe knocks 'em out of the park.
  1:29am
G.:

was that faux annoying joe, or real sheepish joe? ...
  1:30am
Dean Rispler:

Joe - you are hilarious. I would post "lol" but people get mad on here when you do that. I am, though. laughing out loud.
  1:32am
Amanda:

I was laughing at you, Dave, for the record! Joe snuck in there. But it's true, one Joe quip out of 25 is usually gold.
  1:35am
Dean Rispler:

Choice M.C.s! Did you bring any Treacherous 3 with you? How about Whodini?
  1:38am
Laurie:

Is this from that Flying Nun tribute album that came out recently?
  1:38am
efd:

ha! neither of those, Dean
... at least, not THIS week!
  1:39am
efd:

i think this is a different NZ tribute album
  1:41am
Laurie:

I was impatient and couldn't wait for you to fill out the rest of the accuplaylist, Apparently it's not just Flying Nun, but all of NZ. This was actually the comp I was thinking of.

This is seriously one of my favorite songs ever. This is a pretty good cover, but nothing can compare to the original for me. I mentioned how Allen Oldies Band will be my wedding band at my imaginary wedding? And I'm not one of those girls who dreams of dresses and cakes and grooms and shit, but I do think about wedding music, and the DJ would definitely play this song while Allen Oldies took a breather or something.
  1:42am
Laurie:

I mean, the original Chris Knox version of course.
  1:44am
chris:

chocolate snow's a winner.
  1:55am
Laurie:

Bedtime was, like, a half hour ago. I fear I've overshared more than I usually do!
  1:56am
Danne D:

nite evan, great show!
  1:58am
Dean Rispler:

Yes, Evan. It was a great show. Thanks so much and have a great night. I hope to see you soon. I will be at TG on Thursday and definitely at The Mummies at Maxwell's. Hopefully I will see you at one of those.
  1:59am
efd:

thanks Danne! I'll do a fantasy baseball update next week... I know you weren't really serious, but I will say that there are enough other smart baseball minds in our league that I would totally get called out if I was trying to snake someone in a trade!
  1:59am
efd:

thanks, Dean - I'm actually going to be visiting my Mom for her birthday so no shows for me, but I'm sure I'll run into you soon!
  2:01am
Joe:

Great show!

OBITS!
  1:45pm
rory:

the Rox song is GREAT! can't find any info about the band or song on the internets. Any info?
