Consequences | 1977 | Sort of an overture from an album way ahead of its time, Consequences tells the story of Mother Earth out for revenge on us usurpous humans. What began as a 45 record to demonstrate Godley & Creme's invention, the Gizmo (a thing that you attached to a guitar to create sounds of strings etc) became a three-record set that includes a scripted play. It features some top-flight contributions by Peter Cooke and Sarah Vaughn, but it annoyed reviewers because of it's sheer bulk. |

RIVER DEEP, MOUNTAIN HIGH

Book of Talysein | 1968 | From Deep Purple's neglected second album, the song was written by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Phil Spector specifically for Ike & Tina Turner. Story has it that Spector detested Ike and barred him from the studio, which may have turned out better for Ike in the long run. A truncated single of the Purple version did better than the I&T version, which was considered too white for black radio and too black for white radio. |

the Godz | 1978 | This is a cover of a Golden Earring song, produced by Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad. There was once a NYC band called the Godz, but these guys bought out their name. They should have saved their money, for according to Rolling Stone, they were "a miserable hard-rock quartet from Columbus, Ohio, epitomizing the most wretched excesses of seventies rock" and further rated both their first two albums as "worthless" and if you listen to more from it, you'd be tempted to agree. But this one is a killer (of sorts) and the band refuses to die: They are on tour in 2009. Hide your children and make sure your insurance is paid up. |

The Above Ground Sound of Jake Holmes | 1968 | The story goes that Jimmy Page had some time to kill between Yardbirds gigs and caught Jake's set at the Village Vanguard (or someplace), and particularly like this sing, which he then stole and turned into one of LedZep's biggest numbers. No credit or royalties to Jake, mind you, just the opportunity to be a rock footnote. Jake is doing just fine, thank you. He is the writer of countless jingles ("Be All You Can Be," "I'm a Pepper," and worst of all, "Raise Your Hand if You're Sure." With his wife, Katherine (December) Holmes, Jake was half of Allen & Grier, a riotous folk singing duo from the mid-fifties as well. Color Blind | Glitterhouse hailed from Great Neck, Long Island and was led by Mike Gayle. Their album, "Color Blind" was produced by Bob Crewe, who was too absorbed in the Four Seasons to give Glitterhouse the attention they would need to hit the big time. Tinkerbell reached #50 in the New York area, but suffered a slow painful death everywhere else. To make end meet, Mike and the boys did some songs for the soundtrack of Jane Fonda's Barbarella. | |

GREAT BANANA HOAX

Underground | 1967 | The Prunes' second album did not live up to their first (led by "I Had Too Much to Dream") and slowly simmered on the charts, waitng for their real triumph "Mass in F Minor." The band had some 15 members during the 60s (including Kenny Loggins) and they are supposedly working on material for a comeback in 2009. I'm sure I'm not the only one holding his breath. |

Rich Man | Originally named the Chicago Climax Blues Band, but they got a lot of heat from the Chicago Transit Authority (who later had to change their name to just Chicago as a result of heat from the REAL Chicago Transit Authority). They had a long, artistically successful (read: good stuff but no money) career of 18 albums and are currently threatening a comeback. Soon. | |

Atco tried to grab the Butterfly and ride the success of In-a-Gadda with this single to get radio play and it actually sold. In fact the sales of In-a-Gadda were so great that it led Ahmet Ertigun, head honcho of Atlantic records, to create the Platinum Record, since the Butterfly had rendered the concept of the Gold record laughably useless, as sales were 20 times over the Gold Standard. How times change: Led Zep once opened for the Butterly (1/31/69). One year to the day later, the Butterfly opened for LedZep. | ||

Watts in a Tank | You can count the number of Dutch acts that have cracked the American top 40 on one hand, if not one finger (full disclosure: two fingers, we can't forget Focus). Their album reached #25 here and #1 in Canada, mostly on the strength of this infectious single.. Like many bands featured today, they have a reunion planned, on top of their successful charity gig for Tsunami Aid in 2006. | |

Book of Talysein | First time I went to the Fillmore, Dec 18, 1968, Deep Purple had just released Talysein. Ritchie Blackmore absolutely blew me away and I hold him (and Purple in general) partly responsible for my lifelong interest in music. Thanks Ritchie! For the record, Talysein was a poet in the 6th century. There are no records of his Book. |
