A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Aw, poor trouble.

I hate both the Yankees and the Red Sox. But my last favorite baseball team was the '74 As, so there you go.

Feel better!
  9:08am
matheus:

good god!
this is the best erik satie i've ever heard.
  9:10am
Cecile:

ITA matheus
who is the pianist?

Adrian in London:

Greetings Trouble, and to all. There'sa nice piece on the Erik Satie Museum here: http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/27/anne-on-the-move-a-weekend-in-honfleur-france/?scp=3&sq=erik%20satie&st=cse
  9:18am
Cecile:

that looks magical!
  9:18am

good morning all. almost didn't include the good part. Not so much for the phillies loss but our new nj governor, ick!
  9:20am
v k:

can anyone cite a corzine accomplishment? i'm not a fan of new NJ gov, but feel it is time to give someone else a chance
  9:22am
Adrian in London:

Cecile, if you like that then the little Jean Cocteau museum in Menton is one of the best places I've ever visited. It's tiny and beautiful. There's going to be a large centre built nearby, and quite rightly, but the little fort is so perfect it'd be a shame if it were no longer used.
  9:24am
Cecile:

I'd love to get to France. And that sounds lovely, too.
I have to start re-adjusting my priorities. Travel more.
  9:25am

Schools are funded by local property taxes in Virginia. I thought that was the way it is done everywhere.
  9:39am

I can't believe this a Can cover.
I never knew people made Can covers.
  9:39am
Ψ-Ns:

That is why so many old people from NJ move to Florida - no property taxes
  9:39am
em:

this vitamin c track does have restorative powers.
  9:40am
Cecile:

Same here, DDG.
Who were the pianists on the Satie piece, Trouble?

Nothing wrong with Republican governors as long as they're just fiscally conservative and not trying to legislate your bedroom behavior.

Which, sadly, is less and less common these days.
  9:41am
Cecile:

Pawlenty here in MN is unfortunately one of the latter. And extremely capricious with the programs he wants to cut.
  9:41am
BSI:

Ah, the big blood........ this is so much better than anything on the 'Sacrilege' Can remix compilation...

Adrian in London:

Camille, we here in Europe have always been sneery about the tiny number of Americans who have passports, but then someone pointed out to me that you only get one week's holiday per year or something stupid like that. Insane.
  9:45am
Cecile:

that's it exactly.
I get about four or so now that I've been at a public agency for years. But it gets eaten up taking care of sick parents and visiting family at Christmas. I have the time, just not really the $ to travel these days. I want to change that.
  9:49am
em:

don't some european countries give their citizens a stipend/allowance for holiday/travel (essentially a rebate from the income tax)? i seem to remember my friend in the netherlands getting a couple thou delivered from the govt to the bank account slated for holiday expenses.
  9:57am
trouble:

the pianists on the satie were dominique merlet & jean-pierre armengaud
  9:58am
Adrian in London:

That certainly doesn't happen here, Em. On the Monocle magazine podcast they said how Japan tried to kick-start the economy recently by giving everyone 1,500 yen (I think). Canny travel agents were then advertising holidays for, you guessed it, 1,500 yen.

thank you, trouble!
I will have to look up other recordings by them
  10:04am
Adrian in London:

And we have so many countries around us that we need passports for.
  10:04am
Cecile:

good point, DDG. I also want to travel more around the US and Canada as well.
  10:05am
trouble:

on the fabulous occasions I have had to live in europe I was constantly gobsmacked by how quickly you can float from one culture to another. 6 hours travel can drive you through three countries, whereas 6 hours from NYC is pittsburgh...
  10:07am
matheus:

anymore Can covers, Trouble?
  10:08am
north guinea hills:

I read jon savage's "The Creation of Youth 1876-1946" in which that compilation companioned. Awesome read, recommended.
  10:11am
Cecile:

There is much to like about Pittsburgh.
Similiar culture in some ways, but many differences.
  10:11am
Cecile:

and hee, it must be said. Dick Hyman. hee.
  10:14am
Bad Ronald:

I repeat Dick Hyman!!!
  10:14am
PMD:

No offense, but FMU has had 1 day marathons before (last year for sure). Maybe it should just be made 'annual'? I'm not offended and will give money...but still, maybe it should be assumed there will be shortfalls?
  10:15am
em:

last year's was a one minute marathon, no?
  10:17am
Cecile:

we are 12, Bad Ron.
  10:18am
Bad Ronald:

Yes, I am forever sitting in the corner w/a dunce cap on!
  10:19am
trouble:

last year we did not have a one day marathon. and yes the shortfalls are are a part of life, such as last years' marathon not meeting it's goal. a goal that runs the station on the most minimal shoestring budget. REMEMBER everyone of your beloved dj's sits here week after week without pay. Unlike every other radio station....
  10:26am
dale:

i give to wfmu and poughkeepsie's wvkr because they are volunteer staffed. djs on the other 'public' stations on the ny dial collect a salary - no soup for them!
  10:28am
pierre:

Hello, thank you for this program.
I'm listening to you from France... and i appreciate your francophily.
don't forget Katerine, Brigitte Fontaine, Dominique A or The Little Rabbits.
Kiss
  10:29am
Cecile:

I don't mind if DJs get paid places. But I'd also like those stations to be more adventurous with their ideas.
I have no problems donating. I wish I were rich enough to just write a check so you could say "the marathon is cancelled!"
  10:30am
Carmichael:

Good morning Trouble and people of popularity.
  10:31am
trouble:

merci bien pierre! oui moi j'aime katerine, brigitte f, dominique A et the little rabbits. dommage, ces cd's est chez moi aujourd'hui...
  10:34am
Adrian in London:

I received the new Benjamin Biolay album (on triple vinyl!) yesterday. It's not called La Superbe for nothing.
  10:37am
Carmichael:

Wow, I haven't heard Dick Hyman in ages. And I still haven't, since I tuned in late. Is he on the Ohm compilation? I'll have to pull that out again tonite.
  10:38am
dale:

cecile, you hit it on the head. so many stations want your money so they can bring you npr - i can get npr on 5 or 6 stations now from ny and jersey. plus if you listen to 'fuv in ny, well you'll hear the same songs for the next 6 months.
  10:39am
Carmichael:

Speaking of vinyl, I'm ready to get into vinyl-ripping mode. Can anyone recommend a good software to accomplish this?

Good = free or cheap
  10:41am
Bad Ronald:

Get audacity and feed your amp into your soundcard.

Hee Hee pull out the Dick Hyman...
  10:42am
Cecile:

ROFL, bad ron. Stop!
  10:43am
Adrian in London:

If you've got a Mac just create a file in Garageband and stick a 3.5 jack from your turntable into your input on your Mac. Play, record and export as mp3.
  10:45am
Cecile:

OH, cool.
I have garage band.
Hrm. think about this.
  10:47am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

I think that is quite enough about Dick Hyman and his organ.
  10:47am
Adrian in London:

Don't forget to change the input selection in Garageband preferences, otherwise you have 20 minutes of yourself wandering around the room, and coughing or whatever.
  10:50am
pierre:

an interesting thing, you should like and maybe know... It's Prince Miiaou. I just discovered her.

kiss
  10:50am
Parq:

Adrian, what you're suggesting could be a monster WFMU heavy-airplay item.
  10:50am
PMD:

Sorry to be so late coming back. I love FMU. And I greatly appreciate all the DJs and volunteers. But maybe FMU should rethink the 'one 2 week marathon a year' concept so it's not quite so shoestring. Or would that reduce people's willingness to give during those 2 weeks? I don't know. I'll stop spouting now.
  10:56am
trs:

I think you can have a second fundraising period w/o interrupting regularly scheduled radio w/ a marathon. Eg. A 'Silent Marathon'

Me, I'd always give more to the off-marathon one.
  11:01am
Adrian in London:

PMD, yeah, I was going to say that!

Let's face it, there's never a good tie for a marathon. We've all got other things that we have to spend money on, butit's grat that we aren't being hassled for cash every day like on some, say, West Coast US college-based stations.
  11:02am
Carmichael:

Thanks Adrian, but no Mac here. Regular ol' PC w/soundcard.
  11:03am
trs:

Name one double or triple or repeating on-air station you listen to and support each time.
  11:04am
arnaldo:

Non-existing-God bless you, Trouble! Your taste in music is worth more than what our three-term-aberration spent to get himself re-elected
  11:04am
trs:

repeating 'marathons' that is

One's ok.
  11:05am
Adrian in London:

Carmichael: in that case I haven't got a clue.

Trouble, that Vitoire Scott track was a killer!
  11:07am
patrick:

hey trouble long time no listen!! sorry we did not make it to NYC last week. hope things are well. i have been installing all week, ill send you shots at the end of the day.
  11:07am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

I gave twice this year. Once in the spring, and then again about a month ago in response to a mailing saying that FMU missed me and noticed I had not donated for a while. I thought it odd, but fell for the trap, but that's just me.
  11:08am
PMD:

I like the idea of a silent marathon. As a second one. But how do you beg and plead then? How provide updates on how the fundraising is going?

I would like to surf anywhere, even though I am old. I love the ocean and the water.
And I know from blindingly white skin. Thank god for 100+ waterproof sunscreen.

Marshall, everytime I see a pic of Mavericks it's both frightening and beautiful.
  11:49am
Carmichael:

I'm right smack in the middle between Lake Tahoe and The Napa Valley. I surfed the Pacific as a kid, but now I'm old and slow. And wiser.
  11:49am

Just came across this band last week. Love the album, and this song especially.
  11:50am
Marshall Stacks:

For most of us, myself included, a photo will have to do - and will more than suffice.
  11:50am
Jennique:

I live on the east coast now, but I will always think the west coast has the most beautiful beaches. Can't help it. Santa Cruz and Natural Bridge(s) beach is my all time favorite.
  11:51am
Cecile:

I could still do some body surfing at Bondi Beach again if I had the chance, though. Was down there for a year as a kid. LOVED the ocean.

This VCR is a really nice tune!
  11:53am
PMD:

Hey Carmichael - I'm thinking of moving to your neck of the woods from DC area...
  11:53am
Jennique:

Spent a lot of time in the Pacific as a youngster. Will hopefully someday retire there and wear a muu-muu like Mrs. Roper on Three's Company and sell shell art.

Or not.
  11:55am
Marshall Stacks:

Jennique, on behalf of all of us here in Santa Cruz, I thank you. :-)

Speaking of Natural Bridges, it occurs to me that the monarch butterflies are due to arrive there soon on their annual migration. I always try to visit a few times to see them.
  11:57am
Jennique:

Oh yes, the monarchs! I forgot! They would cover whole tree trunks as I recall. Were you able to see Natural Bridges when it was two bridges? Makes me sad that only one stands, but at least it was the ocean that dragged it down.
  11:58am
Ike:

Belatedly: Someone wanted to know one thing that Corzine accomplished. I don't like him a lot, but: children's health insurance. Eliminated dual-office holding. Killed death penalty (admittedly wasn't being used). Gun control. Installed solar panels.

Now we have a hard-right social conservative friend of W. who wants to cut taxes for the rich. Bleh.
  12:01pm
Carmichael:

NO kidding, PMD??

Jennique:

Chris Christie. Who names their kid CHRIS when their last name is CHRISTIE?
