A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hello from Madison. This is *way* too early for me ...

ffrr:

Trouble, I haven't heard this biz cut since my days on St. James Pl, Bklyn in the '90's. Brings back great mems. Thanks!
  9:05am
annie:

it's about time you relaxed, trouble..
  9:10am
Nicolas Sarkozy:

A big hello from France for all of you.
  9:11am
Brian:

Trouble, the francophones were representing during Maria's show. Where are they now?
  9:13am
Brian:

Wow. Spoke too soon.
  9:15am
trouble:

bonjour nicolas ! i love your suits...
  9:16am
v k:

amazing weather; wonderful dj; life is beautiful.
  9:18am
Nicolas:

Thanks Trouble...ready for a french lesson ?
  9:19am
Brian:

@Nicolas Lower case french? That's a bit too suggestive, perhaps.
  9:23am
BSI:

...and along came RA!
  9:25am
Nicolas:

Lowercase ...yes it's a bit too suggestive, Brian.
  9:27am
trouble:

thank you brian for your gallantry, but je pense que je suis pret....
  9:33am
Brian:

Ce n'est pas pour rien qu'on utilise les majuscules !
  9:34am
annie:

please use the last two and a half hours for birdsong?
  9:40am
Chicken Will:

12ft by how many feet? You probably do have room for chickens.
  9:43am

"It shall be unlawful for any person to keep horses, cattle, swine, sheep or goats or to keep any live poultry or fowl including ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens or members of the pigeon family other than registered homing pigeons or to operate any apiary or otherwise keep bees for any purpose in the city."

  9:46am
trouble:

i might have room for chicks but not room for the poop...but i am trying to wrangle bees. although they like to face southeast, to wake up with the sunrise. don't we all.
  9:46am
dc pat:

I've heard roosters in Takoma Park, MD which is JUST over the DC border.
  9:48am
Brian:

Re chickens in Madison: http://www.madcitychickens.com/
  9:49am
dale:

morning trouble, morning gang. the problem with chickens is that unless you have enough space to have a chicken tractor and move it about, you need feed. is there a purina feed mill in jersey city?
  9:50am
J-Mar:

Etron Fou Leloublan, peut-etre?
  9:50am
Chicken Will:

Not a bad choice. Bees poop much less. A bit more spendy to get into them, though. I wouldn't worry if they can't face SW. Bees have a way of figuring it out.
  9:50am
erella:

Hello and good morning trouble. Thanks for Charlotte Gainsbourg after her father's song. Hey, don't you think this song sounds like India Song? It could make a great mash up.
  9:52am
dc pat:

this gainsbourg tune is making it for me. Is the music derived from something else? Sounds ... familiar.
  9:52am
no ees?:

the problem w/ chickens the toxicity of the poop once it reaches certain concentrations. One coop is aok. 2, 3....?
  9:54am
dc pat:

hence, dead water bodies like the Potomac. Too much chicken.
  9:55am
trouble:

chicken poop is great if you can move the birds around and fertilize the soil, which is what i can't do. and are bees expensive? the hive is i guess.
  9:56am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

haven't heard this show before, but I'm diggin.

you better watchout, the hitch-cocks are lurking.
  9:57am
trouble:

bonjour erella movie star!
  9:58am
dc pat:

small amounts of chickens are good--factory farm levels are badbadbadbad.
  9:58am
Cecile:

Hi, all!

I loved that Charles Burnett movie "To Sleep With Anger" because it showed a part of LA where people still had chicken coops and big gardens.
  9:59am
dale:

if you have space for a big compost pile and a year to wait for it chicken poop is no problem. eggs from your own chickens have wonderful bright orange yolks, not the sickly yellow yolks of commercially farmed eggs.
  9:59am
no ees?:

agreed;

but small amounts of chickens doesn't stay small. The risk is worse than factory farms w/ big big numbers of small.
  10:00am
Cecile:

That is true. I had some amazing fresh eggs at this little Irish fish and chips place for breakfast the other day. Bright orange yolks and so much flavor.
  10:01am
Charcutero:

I was watching Todd English on WHYY in Philly last weekend. He was at a Chicken farm in Italy. The farmer eats 18 raw eggs each morning sprinkled with course salt and pepper. You should have seen how beatifully orange the yolks were!
  10:01am
trouble:

dale, you are so helpful, but the real estate is finite! i am sort of pushing it with raspberries along the chain link fence and a a compost in the corner...
  10:02am
no ees?:

factory farms know they're big
the rules and reg's aim to match that scale of big from the start

small thinks small
  10:02am
Peter:

Multiple choice question: Is Trouble's recent foray into white noise...
a) an indication she has changed her medication
b) a bold leap into her own version of "space" ala the Grateful Dead?
  10:02am
ffrr:

What was the name of the chicken Lisa had on 'Green Acres'?
  10:03am
Cecile:

burning star core is a win on any show. It's like the little black dress of noise
  10:05am
postmanpaul:

hi cecile, forgive me, but eggs at this little Irish fish and chips place for breakfast sounds both divine and irish!
  10:07am
trouble:

peter!! there are a few words that are not allowed in my house and grateful dead is one of them, jethro tull would be another...king crimson a third
  10:07am
dc pat:

our farmer's eggs are bright orange indeed! I have a compost bin in the heart of DC and am expanding to another one. It's hard to do on a very small scale but I'm not in a hurry.....hey Specials!
  10:07am
dale:

beekeepers can often get free colonies. i had a huge colony stuck to the eve of my house last summer. it just appeared. called a few beekeepers and one came out that evening (when the bees return from their gathering) and he climbed a ladder and brushed them into a box with a feather of all things. he said it had both italian and russian bees in it, which was unusual. he did this often because sometimes he'll go out to one of his hives and the colony just decided to up and leave.
  10:09am
BSI:

sounds like one hell of a remaster/remix on Gangsters. Unless my copy is particularly wretched.... also very possible.
  10:10am
Cecile:

postmanpaul, it is divine.
It's a tiny menu for breakfast and a smaller one for dinner. All local, organic when possible.

My husband had a pastie (not really a pastie, but more like deep fried shepherd's pie :P) and I had a fillet of cod that died happy the size of my forearm. The cook thoguth my fillet shrunk too much, so he gave us a whole 'nother one!

And those thick, squishy chips cooked in fishy oil. Sooooo gooood.
  10:11am
Cecile:

BSI, I think everyone's vinyl copy of the Specials is trashed. I know mine is. Well-loved.
  10:11am
dale:

specials remind me of the selector. celebrate the bullet is a great song.
  10:13am
Adrian in London:

(Strolls in late) Sorry been sitting in Lincolns Inn Fields reading a book – IN THE SUNSHINE!!!!
  10:13am
Cecile:

Great records, all. That tiny first wave of second gen ska was pretty awesome.

Nice, Adrian!
  10:18am
Hugues:

nice french accent trouble...
  10:18am
Cecile:

I saw it. I read it online. It was beautiful. I miss Lee.
  10:21am
Cecile:

You can find a private foundation funding dog training in prisons. They not only train assistance dogs for vets, but also for guide dogs, and other service purposes.
  10:22am
staceyjoy:

Who committed suicide? Malcolm McLaren? Sorry I missed the first part of what you were saying!
  10:22am
jamessie:

Hi Trouble I am loving your show . Its sunny and I am shredding my past from 30 years preparing to move. I love the Javiera Mena. I hope we will find our next house. Maybe you can eat again with us. Love Jamesie x
  10:23am
Cecile:

Alexander McQueen, stacey.
  10:23am
north guinea hills:

(jealous of Adrian in London, but I'll get to read in the sunshine by the Hudson during my lunch break)
  10:23am
Adrian in London:

I saw an episode of The Dog Whisperer where Cesar Milan visited a women's prison where they get dogs to help them learn how to socialise. It was really moving, and I don't even like dogs.
  10:24am
trouble:

no honey stacey, not malcolm, alexander mcqueen, a while back. are you coming to maryland sheep and wool with us?
  10:26am
Cecile:

Yep, Adrian! It is amazing.
  10:27am
staceyjoy:

oh, yeah...and yes! but we need to make reservations on the bus, if you guys don't want to drive.
  10:29am
postmanpaul:

enchanting show trouble, thank ee v much.
cecile - enjoyed your breakfast-time story; i hope the irish cornish pastie was to your husbands' liking.
  10:30am
trouble:

stacey the bus is sold out! i am driving.
  10:30am
Cecile:

He loved it, but still insists it's not a pastie. LOL!
  10:31am
Adrian in London:

Paul, reread what Cecile said: "A deep-fried shepherd's pie". It's obviously a Scottish restaurant!
  10:33am
annie:

alrighty then, i am quickly becoming disenchanted with the new winamp.....
  10:33am
Cecile:

LOL! Well, they say they're Irish.

And it was indeed tasty. They disagreed with us that it was shepherd's pie "Well there's pork in there instead of lamb". I don't care, some piggy got into the paddock. You don't put mashed potatoes in a Cornish pastie!

Ah, food. Fun stuff.
  10:34am
sugarwolf:

I am jealous of you MD sheep & wool attendees!

trouble, did you see the last crochet today magazine? they shot some of the pictures at Tropicalia in Furs
  10:34am
staceyjoy:

awesome. I'm in! Are you bringing the littlest DJ? he'd love it/ great show today BTW...I have to leave very shortly..
  10:38am
trouble:

trying not too... i will write you once i am off air, thanks for the good words.
  10:39am
postmanpaul:

yes adrian, sounds like it was poss' a variation of the classic north of the border hundreds and thousands coated runny marzipan-drizzled deep fried mars bar to me too!
  10:39am
trouble:

no way sugarwolf! what is on the cover?
  10:40am
ffrr:

Happy Birthday Doris! (last Friday).
  10:44am
Cecile:

yes, but with 100% more pork!
  10:52am
dale:

who did the forbidden planet soundtrack, anyone famous?
  10:53am
north guinea hills:

Louis and Bebe Barone did the Forbidden Planet soundtrack.
  10:54am
Carmichael:

Morning Trouble, morning everyone.
  10:54am
Francis:

Just coming back home, good morning Trouble ! Thanks for Leo Ferré,Toto Bissainthé,Mendelson in your last weeks great shows (i listened in archives). Here in France,it's raining,so happy to welcome spring after this long & cold winter.
  10:55am
trouble:

i love that soundtrack. bonjour francis!
  10:57am
Cecile:

and it is a fantastic sountrack!
  10:59am
Alex:

Thanks for playing "His Jeweled Floor." A great choice.
  11:06am
Alex:

Good for you Trouble. I'm so sick of all this techy gadget crap. As long as it looks cool and people are told they should like it, they will sacrifice to be the first to have one. Lame.
  11:06am
sugarwolf:

trouble, it is the march/april issue

it is probably the only craft magazine i've seen showing a caetano veloso record
  11:06am
Cecile:

People want giant Kindles.
That's what it seems like to me.

My husband will probably get one in a few years. He likes online comics and comic books, and that would be good for him.

I like new things. Like getting a record on the day it comes out. Or seeing a movie the first weekend it comes out.

Some people save up for new things, and brown bag their lunches. That's fine.
  11:07am
v k:

iPad - I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT - last night on iPad i was watching live footage of 'atoms for peace' show i attended monday night - media features are unbelievable - amazing to sit back with a small devise and enjoy - it was worth every penny ($499) to me - it makes casual internet use, well, casual - laptops and desktops too cumbersome for me now
  11:08am
dc pat:

whoa, just decided to go back to Sylvia the other night---thanks.
  11:08am
Jennique:

iPad=sad
Lurv it.
And oh my, Sylvia Plath.
We need a modern Sylvia Plath to set us all straight.
Meanwhile, here is a funny link concerning the iPad. Simply put -
Will it blend?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAl28d6tbko
  11:10am
erella:

One thing about the ipad- Wifi exists for laptops, but if we want the internet on the go, we have to pay lots of $$$$ to telecom companies for iphone/blackberry things. I think the ipad is a kind of a missing link that is supposed to allow us to take advantage of the FREE wifi systems. For that reason, I am curious.
  11:10am
sugarwolf:

my 80 year old cousin is getting an iPad for her birthday next month!
  11:11am
Adrian in London:

I hate Jack Penate but I really like this. Damn, that's what comes with keeping an open mind about things
  11:12am
Cecile:

sugarwolf, that's awesome!!!!

Adrian, that's how I ended up with Britney Spears on my Pandora cue.
  11:13am
Carmichael:

@Cecile: reviewing the comments and the whole Shepherd's pie experience. It's difficult not to insult an Irish person by referring to something British. Even the most attentive Anglophiles are guilty of faux pas-ing. If those folks were indeed Irish, you'd have known it directly after calling their food by a British name. :-)

And it works the other way, too!
  11:15am
Carmichael:

My 1st impression of the iPad is "huh"? It's like walking around with a picture frame.
  11:17am
dc pat:

Carm: you got that right. I'm insulted by the very existence of the English national soccer team. I agree with your assessment of the iP(h)ad too.
  11:18am
dc pat:

troubs: can you play something by Vialka?
  11:18am
v k:

one more tidbit - an iPad is to a laptop as a laptop is to a desktop - to me therein lies the allure - iPad smaller, lighter, easier, more mobile, less cumbersome - and to borrow and old but wise cliche, when the umbrella was invented, haters dissed it too
  11:19am
Cecile:

They're Irish, then. LOL!
That's too funny.

But, Carm, seriously. Deep-fried shepherd's pie. That's what it was. They also have regular shepherd's pie on the menu, so I am not dreaming here.

I think it's like this great Jewish deli I went to in Libertyville, IL, a wealthy Chicago suburb. Their most popular sandwich is swiss cheese and pastrami. Which is so not kosher. But as the owners put it "What do you want? We're in Libertyville , for chrissakes!"

So they throw in some Shepherd's pie at the Anchor to cast the net wider. Pun not intended, but it works anyway.

Carm! Flight of the Conchords are playing Berkely at the end of May. Tickets for the Greek are going onsale tomorrow.

I was going to go but way too $$$ for me.
  11:19am
Cecile:

wow, that was a novel.
  11:22am
matt:

http://harpers.org/archive/2010/04/hbc-90006838 How green is the ipad
  11:23am
Carmichael:

Thanks for the notice. I've got to check their schedule to see if they'll be out my way. It'll more than make up for the Justin Bieber concert my daughters are forcing me to go to ...
  11:24am
Cecile:

They will be there on May 28. They are only playing the Hollywood Bowl and the Greek at UC Berkeley.

So they say....

But yeah, aren't they out your way if they're in Berkeley? The date is May 28. Tickets go onsale 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
  11:25am
Cecile:

Hollywood Bowl is the 30th.
  11:27am
Carmichael:

Yep, Berserkely is about 70 miles from my place! <rubs hands together vigorously>
  11:28am
dale:

just wiki'd the barones - fascinating people.
  11:29am
Cecile:

I live to give. Enjoy!
The tix were well-priced, but the airfare just killed me. pffft!
  11:31am
Adrian in London:

@cecile Britney's Toxic played stupidly loud is amazing. And Yaelle naim's cover of it is beautiful
  11:32am
Cecile:

ITA, Adrian. Also Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra does a great version of it.
  11:41am
ffrr:

Eleanor was the cow's name, Alice was the chicken. There, I answered my own question.
  11:42am
Francis:

Some europeans have flied to New York only to buy this ipad while it will be offered for sale in Europe just at the end of april.Technology addiction, consumerism addiction, or stupidity addiction ?!
There's something else new I appreciate more and I haven't to cross the atlantic for that: each year ,in the begining of April, lots of different and beautiful birds (goldfinchs,swallows,wagtails...) are coming back to my home to live their love stories and they have really a great presence !
  11:43am
dc pat:

SKA! I got to admit, I was hugely in to the English 2nd wave of ska but once I heard the real thing, that was it. Jamaica ska rules.
  11:45am
Cecile:

yeah, dcp, but what a great gateway in!
  11:48am
Carmichael:

I loved the English Beat, Fine Young Cannibals, the Skatellites, etc .... There was also a Portland OR ska band called the Crazy 8s that hit it big regionally. One of my all-time favorites.
  11:52am
dc pat:

my faves are a group called the Jamaica Ska Kings but they haven't appeared on any re-releases or compliations. My only reference to them is an album a friend of mine found UNDER A HOUSE, fact.
  11:57am
Cecile:

that's amazing, DCP!
  11:58am
Carmichael:

Any album found under a house automatically sounds good. It's some kind of law.
  12:00pm
dc pat:

indeed, and it was in great shape too. BUT, I lost my tape of it so I've been searching for a re-release ever since...
  12:00pm
v k:

jeff sarge of reggae school room played a song last sunday i can't stop listening to - Eek-a-Mouse, "Sensi Party" ...amazing
