big WSJ article on the Freebird phenomenon

  11:09pm
randy in NC:

Wow
  11:09pm
Laurie:

EFD, can you title tonight's show Back to the Woodshed?
  11:10pm
dave:

short, shameful confession: "when the levee breaks" is the only zep song i really kinda like..

does that make me a bad person?
  11:12pm
Ron from NJ:

It's a shame I have to hear Led Zep at all. I kind of came to this station to get away from from the bands I hear played over and over elsewhere . . . Otherwise, nice show!
  11:13pm
randy in NC:

@dave, no
  11:13pm
lisa jane p:

Not shameful, Dave. There will be more to like if you dig in to earlier records.
  11:14pm
white:

stripes
  11:16pm
dave:

yay new white hills!
  11:17pm
lisa jane p:

beautiful segue.
  11:17pm
efd:

dave, I'll have a live set from them on the show next week!

And good Tuesday evening to one and all!
  11:19pm
efd:

thanks LJP! Segue appreciation is always appreciated!
  11:19pm
Joe:

It's hard being way too cool for Led Zeppelin.

@EFD - Important announcement re: The Upper Crust -

Bumbles has informed me that The Upper Crust will be gracing The ROCKSOFF Concert Cruise series with their presence on Wednesday, June 30th at 7:00pm sharp aboard the HMS Half Moon.
  11:23pm
Joe:

I figure yr audience is the target audience for that type of information.

opening act: The Anabolics
  11:24pm
Ron from NJ:

Joe: LOL. Not way too cool for Led Zep. Quite the opposite. 40 years of "Zep Rules" from commerical radio has done it to me. Smooth plug re he Upper Crust.
  11:24pm
efd:

oh my! Thanks for that info, Joe!

Ron, I understand your point re Led Zeppelin... my two points of rebuttal are:
1. Just because a song has been overplayed on classic rock radio doesn't make it a bad song.
- 1a. I've had a craving to hear that song since last week
- 1b. I don't listen to other radio stations, so I don't hear that song all the time.
2. It's a matter of re-contextualizing how you hear the song.
  11:26pm
dave:

3. "When The Levee Breaks" is a great song.
  11:26pm
efd:

that was implied. :)
  11:27pm
dave:

i just think it's important to be explicit about these things.
  11:28pm
AZ:

Led Zep-->White Hills: elegant!
  11:28pm
efd:

dave - fair enough.
AZ - thank you!
  11:28pm
m9:

White Hills is amazing!
  11:30pm
Paolo:

Hey Evan, hope you're having a great night. I'm feeling a bit guilty that I wasn't able to work on a project today, so I'm using your show to help me relax and enjoy the evening. Take care
  11:32pm
dave:

that white hills set: Appointment Radio.
  11:34pm
dave:

polveri di stelle: "star dust", according to google translate.
  11:35pm
Paolo:

Polvere di stelle means "dust of the stars" or "dust from stars"
  11:38pm
efd:

ah! thanks guys!
  11:39pm
Paolo:

Hahahaha, my English must suck if I couldn't think of "stardust". And here I thought my Italian could be of good use. I also should quit posting from an iPod touch
  11:43pm
dave:

yr english is great. my italian is nonexistent.
  11:48pm
AZ:

Enthralled--as ever--by the music, but saddened by the realization that we've heard the last of "Super Sox '75."
  11:59pm
mb:

nailed it!
  12:00am
lisa jane p:

Art Bell used to play Midnight At The Oasis as bumper music. Are you broadcasting LIVE from Mel's Hole?
  12:03am
Sybil:

Good evening all! I'm back from the frozen north country. Citi Field, that is. My fingers are just thawing out.

I missed a set that contained Wild Cherry AND Led Zeppelin? Dang!
  12:08am
dave:

i suspect justine from math the band is in for one of the most surreal post-show experiences of her life.
  12:08am
nik:

Did I just hear a WXYC station ID?
  12:13am
randy in NC:

I thought I did too...
  12:14am
efd:

I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about, Nik and Randy. :)

Sybil, were you at both games??
  12:16am
Sybil:

Yeah, I was at both. I only survived the second one until the 7th inning break though. But aren't I the lucky one? How often do you get two games for the price of one? (No Manny though. :<)
  12:23am
Sybil:

I just plain adore the name of this band. Not to mention the "title" of their "song".
  12:25am
Danne D:

Hi Funk Friends!!!

Oh and greetings from the home of the first place team in the EFD Happy How Do You Do To You Fantasy Baseball League...Your New Jersey Knuckles! :D

had to brag, since this is my first (and probably last) time ever leading the league :)
  12:25am
Sybil:

...to say nothing of the album title and the label name. And the song isn't bad, either! Eagerly looking forward...
  12:25am
efd:

You're right, Sybil, that's a pretty sweet deal! Cold night for a ballgame, though.

And I totally agree with you re EWITFR... N!
  12:26am
Sybil:

congrats, Danne!
  12:29am
dave:

bits of that boston spaceships song remind me of pavement.
  12:33am
Sybil:

So here's the report from Citi Field:

1) Dang it was cold
2) and windy
3) did I mention the wind?
4) Loney got ejected (first time ever) for arguing a strike call.
5) There were a lot of walks in these two games. (see #2, 3)
6) There are, alas, bad views in Citi Field. My seat, for example, which should have been good (though cheap) with a clear view of the pitcher and batter. However, this view passes through an aisle. Citi now makes an announcement asking people not to walk through the aisles during an at-bat. People comply with this request about as often as you probably think they would.
7) Did I mention it was cold? and windy?
8) Nevertheless, a great time was had by all. But some of us had too much beer by about the second inning of game 2. Just saying.
  12:37am
randy in NC:

Got to tear myself away, great 1st set, efd. Need to hear the Russel Mael interview tomorrow AM...
  12:39am
Danne D:

Glad you had a great time, Sybil :)

So, EFD, when is the official EFD Show road trip to Fenway? :D
  12:39am
Listener Pete:

EFD:

I soon as you sent me your email, I sent the Cute Lepers a message via their MySpace page. Like you said its good to see the power of the Internet in action! Enjoy!
  12:40am
efd:

have a good night, Randy! Sybil, great report - thanks! And Danne, enjoy your run at the top!
  12:40am
Sybil:

Oops I forgot:

Jason Bay (never saw him in person before) hit a HR first game, and made a spectacular catch and hit a (triple? I think) second game.

And David Wright had a simply amazing second game.

It's nice to see baseball played well.

Too bad the Dodgers have no relief pitching. Once again I thought I ought to volunteer. (Last time it was for the Mets.)
  12:41am
dave:

and while i'm on the topic of "reminds me of": this valley lodge song and the VU's "rock and roll", but maybe that's obvious.
  12:43am
adam:

that valley lodge song was great. looking forward to the live set
  12:46am
Danne D:

Ah, so it was Sybil presence that inspired Jason Bay to do so well for me today. :) That makes total sense :)

By the way, great show Evan!
  12:46am
AZ:

Home Blitz: one of the greatest bands I saw at SXSW this year. (And their entire set is available on the WFMU website!)
  12:50am
Sybil:

Glad to help however I can, Danne!

Weirdest Citi experience: at one point they played a cover by who-knows-who of James Brown's "Sex Machine", except that the lyrics were changed to "making the scene like a loving machine"

Reminds me of when the Rolling Stones sang "Let's Spend Some Time Together" on Ed Sullivan...
  12:52am
Danne D:

Cool Places :)
Brings back the memories.
  12:56am
Pete:

EFD:

If you have the new "Kings Go Forth" record called "The Outsiders Are Back" on Luaka Bop in the new bin, if you could play a song called " I Don't Love You No More.(Track 2). They are retro soul band from Milwaukee that I think you will like . . .
  12:57am
E.L.:

Method Actors! So many great songs on this thing!
  1:06am
efd:

hey there E. L.!

Pete, thanks for the tip (and for the Cute Lepers help) - I'll take a look for Kings Go Forth next week.
  1:10am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Why don't more people play this album?
  1:11am
efd:

looks like we just got it - it's dated 4/23
  1:12am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Hot rats has Been out for a while though
  1:22am
efd:

with all the new stuff that the station gets it can sometimes take a while for things to be added, especially since it's basically one person and a handful of sporadic volunteers going through everything.
  1:26am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Hard to believe this woman is over 70!
  1:28am
efd:

for serious!

She's only a year older than Jet Black of the Stranglers, for that matter.
  1:31am
south fla john:

hey! Joe B played that song already.
  1:33am
Sybil:

Are you tryiing to make me feel old?

Go try.
  1:35am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Daniel Miller much?
  1:35am
efd:

John, if every song Joe played were off limits to me that would be an untenable situation.
  1:43am
Danne D:

Packing it in early tonight :) Thanks for the great show Evan! Good night Funk Faithful!
  1:45am
efd:

goodnight, Danne!
  1:46am
AZ:

Dirk Wears White Sox: such a great, underrated album. ("Cartrouble" is the key track for me.)
  1:49am
efd:

yeah, I'll definitely be playing "Cartrouble" from this reish at some point. (there are 3 versions on the CD!)
  1:52am
AZ:

The long one that opens the LP is the best--the "parts 1&2" version. The second half of that is spectacular.
  1:56am
efd:

duly noted! :)
