A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  9:03am
Charcutero:

Trouble! Good morning
  9:08am
trouble:

good morning!!!
  9:09am
CheriPi:

Bonjour from Cincinnati :)
  9:10am
Listener James from Westwood:

This English major is digging the Eliot. Any chance of pairing it w. Plath reading "Daddy"?
  9:10am
anne:

morning Trouble! have you heard about this already? For the Birds film series this week at Anthology Film Archives in NYC, http://www.anthologyfilmarchives.org/schedule/search/search-result/?program=FOR%20THE%20BIRDS
  9:19am
trouble:

listener james from westwood: I LOVE that sylvia plath poem, but i don't think i have it with me, i will dig around and see what i can find.
  9:24am
Listener James from Westwood:

Cool, thanks!! Always a treat to hear an author present his or her own work. Years ago in a more laissez-faire FCC era, a late-night FMU DJ played Ginsberg reading "Howl" in its entirety. Changed the way I read the poem after that.
  9:27am
trouble:

definately! a lot of the fab ginsbergs are not radio friendly...
Anne: thanks for that fab bird link! i did not know about it, will announce it
  9:29am
Bastardo:

Good morning Trouble, Was just reading this story, http://tinyurl.com/2et9czc
So typical..have a great show..
  9:33am
Parq:

So pleasant putting on my tie to the accompaniment of that Paris squeezebox music.
  9:35am
Ken From Hyde Park:

What about tomorrow, April 30? Is that still part of Poetry Month?
  9:36am
dale:

morning poetry lovers. if you haven't seen this youtube channel, check it out- it's creepy and enticing all at once.
http://www.youtube.com/user/poetryanimations
  9:37am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hopefully, Diane Kamikaze will read some Dr. Seuss tonight.
  9:46am
still b/p:

Recruited for a reading of Beat material last week, I took the organizer's recommendation (others passed) to get into character....a half-assed Burroughs voice and thrift-store approximation of appearance.
  9:48am
dc pat:

dale: that is COOL AS HELL (I don't say "awesome" or I would). very creepy...
  9:50am
dc pat:

walt whitman is down right scary!!
  9:50am
trouble:

bastardo: exactly what i'm talking about! that is where part of today's show title comes from...
  9:51am
Brian:

Boo from Madison.
  9:52am
Listener James from Westwood:

b/p: I definitely would have picked WSB too. I don't match him physically, but I've got a good handle on his voice and delivery, thanks to repeat listenings to the "Spare Ass Annie" disc.
  9:53am
seang:

saw the Gleaners and I about a month ago and was blown away!
  9:53am
Brian:

Shouldn't it be "the gleaners and me."?
  9:56am
Brian:

Never mind. It looks like a mistranslation: Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse.
  10:04am
still b/p:

LJfrom W: Oh, I've got the gaunt goin' on. Found general quality of WSB vocal easier than precise sound/accent...midwest + Texas + wild cards. Or Richard Cardinal Cushing meets Ned Sparks meets southwest rancher.

If you do it well, you could do a one man show and take it on the road... forever, like Hal Holbrook doing Twain.
  10:06am
wha?:

The Hoboken Chicken Emergency!
  10:07am
sugarwolf:

a chicken in Hoboken? were you stuck in a Daniel Pinkwater book?
  10:08am
lewis:

I got bogged down almost immediately in *Shopcraft..* as well. Kind of a disappointment
  10:10am
Cecile:

Good morning, all!
  10:11am
Listener James from Westwood:

b/p: I hear ya. I've found, in mimicking voices (I do a good Homer and Burns), if you can match the rhythm of the delivery, listeners will fill in the blanks on your actual vocal tone & suspend disbelief. Dressing the part also adds to it; got a good voice/appearance match on Hunter Thompson that way one Halloween, even though I'm not a tall, balding hillbilly.
  10:12am
PMD:

Beastie Boys on trouble's show?? wow.
  10:13am
dale:

i've always wanted to read that book - i went from office job to drywall installing trim painting roofing etc. now i'm broke but much happier. miss the exchange of ideas interaction with people though.
  10:13am
bill:

i thought 'hypnotizing chickens' was referring to the 'lust for life' lyrics ... pretty hip for the pentagon ...
  10:13am
bastardo:

"Peter eater parking meter all of the time
If I run out of ale it's Thunderbird wine
Miller drinking chicken eating dress so fly
I got friends in high places that are keeping me high"
  10:13am
Brian:

@PMD: I take it as a sly reference to gleaning.
  10:16am
bw:

Trouble! I sent you an email of a pic of something awesome I got from France! you will have to translate it for me though... I am working on your interview today - oooh la!
  10:19am
wha?:

Thanks Trouble & Bastardo for the NYT link.
I've been working on a professional development proposal in PPT. The poor choice of doing this in PPT is slowly but surely killing me. Sadly, I'm pretty sure any other format would be rejected with a "just give it to me as bullets in a powerpoint" response.
  10:19am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

it wasn't VD, was it?
  10:22am
Cecile:

Ah, yes, PowerPoint. Which version? I might actually not hate PowerPoint 2007 because there's so much pre-canned stuff that actually looks alright.
  10:24am
Brian:

Around here, PowerPoint has been retired in favor of Prezi.
  10:25am
Cecile:

Prezi? That sounds good, but if it's not part of the Office suite, it's a pain getting it here.
  10:27am
Brian:

Is that Prezi Prado I hear?
  10:30am
Listener James from Westwood:

"Power corrputs. PowerPoint corrupts absolutely." —Edward Tufte. (His Wired article on PPT: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.09/ppt2.html )
  10:30am
wha?:

it's '07, but that doesn't make things much better. It's still essentially the same box.

The only saving grace, mentioned in the article, is that you can save time being a little sloppy with prose. But if the deck is going to get passed around (and mine will), you still have to be careful with word choice.

Haven't seen Prezi. Does it export (e.g. to .swf, like Keynote?)
  10:30am
seang:

felt a rumble... must be a Boobquake!
  10:31am
Lewis:

Keynote on the Mac is very clean. the export to ppt in iWork 09 is better. All of this goes around the real problem of thinking in bullets..
  10:32am
Chris - Bristol:

@Brian: what did you get PowerPoint for it's retirement gift? Was the leaving party any good?
  10:33am
Cecile:

I'd love to have a Mac here.
It would have prevented this whole cluster-f**k of an Office update rollout I'm involved with.
  10:35am
Brian:

We put PPt to the guillotine.
  10:36am
Clippy:

"It looks like you're trying to cut off my head! May I help?"
  10:36am
texas scott:

ha ha.he said boobquake.ladies, don't do it.for the safety of us all.
  10:38am
Parq:

I rejoice to say, everything I know about PPt, I learned from the "Gettysburg Powerpoint Presentation".
  10:40am
dale:

i loved 48 crash when it came out. sounds lame now.
  10:44am
Cecile:

Trouble, I hate to be all WCBN on you, and also sound like Irwin but please cut some slack for Miley, She's not even 20 years old. Most people are kind of lame in their teens. Even Iggy!

When she's 25 and still doing the same schtick, please fire away.
  10:44am
wendy:

what is the name the netflix movie just mentioned about food scavenging? i only heard the last bit.
  10:45am
Cecile:

The Gleaners?
  10:47am
Brian:

The Gleaners and I (sic)
Or: Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse
  10:47am
Cecile:

Oooh, perfect music selection for the Gleaners!
  10:48am
wendy:

thanks! yes, found it now on netflix. thank-you!
  10:48am
Carmichael:

Aloha everyone.
  10:50am
wendy:

(oh funny, i already had it in my movie queue, but at #83. i'm moving it up!)
  10:51am
Cecile:

I got that Wii disc for netflix. It's awesome!

I know it's bourgie, but I love me some Wii.
  10:52am
Carmichael:

Speaking of Netflix, I found the Gary Wilson bio without knowing of the FMU connection. It was a nice surprise watching him walking his dog wearing an FMU T-shirt.
  10:58am
Brian:

I hadn't realized WFMU offered dog tees.
  10:59am
Listener James from Westwood:

w00t—e.e.!!
  10:59am
Brian:

e.e. cummings. For once it's appropriate to list it in all lower case!
  11:00am
dc pat:

I was just looking for e.e.cummings on the youtube link that Dale mentioned above, thanks trouble.
  11:00am
Parq:

Trouble should have listed cummings with initial caps just to be, well, trouble.
  11:01am
still b/p:

Would make for the good joking if all caps for that one playlist entry.
  11:02am
still b/p:

Is jinxing!
  11:04am
Cecile:

that was a great article!
  11:05am
dc pat:

mint julep! Derby Day on Saturday!
  11:06am
Jennique:

I am so glad you quoted the ridiculousness of this article. Just goes to show what is out of fashion will inevitably come back in style. Whether it's body altering or hem lines.
  11:10am
dc pat:

yay Wanda.
  11:10am
Cecile:

What's interesting is that audiences are noticing that bad botoxing makes it looks like Barbie and Ken dolls are up there. If you have no movement in your face, it's hard to be a good actor. Directors and producers were hiring many actresses from outside the US because their faces still moved and their chestal regions were less, erm, symetrical and prominent.

Also, I've been reading stuff about this for about 2 years. I am now convinced the NYT will cover any trend 24 months after it's started. just like clockwork.
  11:12am
LizGig:

Cecile, I take it as a rule of thumb that if it's in the newspaper it is either already ubiquitous or, if it's a trend, it's over.
  11:13am
Brian:

"Chestal" ? Huh. Are foreign actresses chestally diminutive?
  11:14am
Daisy:

totally hot wanda !!! thank you trouble, dancing in my cubicle at work!
  11:15am
Parq:

What 'Cile said about the Good Grey Lady's currency. My personal slogan for that paper is "You Read It Here Last".
  11:15am
Cecile:

very true, Liz. I see the NYT as the beginning of the end.

Brian, not necessarily diminutive, but it also doesn't look like someone sawed a medicine ball in half and placed it on their chests.
  11:18am
dc pat:

but I think Hollywood, etc will always demand fake women. Stretched out faces may go out of style but now women are going to flock to plastic surgeons for the "natural look"
  11:19am
Brian:

Chestally sinuous, then. Or chestally lithesome. As opposed to chestally, eh, abrupt.
  11:19am
dc pat:

chestally perky fruit-punch.
  11:25am
Cecile:

It's the difference between actors and stars, dcp. Actors can change appearance for roles, a movie star is a role you are in all the time, it seems like.
  11:25am
Today's Casting Agent:

  11:28am
bw:

"troubled times!"

I hear a new radio show podcast!!! heh
  11:31am
Cecile:

This isn't the same David Essex who did "Rock On?"
  11:32am
dc pat:

Cecile: maybe but if you buy into that crap, you're buying the whole package, real actor or not.
  11:33am
Cecile:

Sure. It's a fine line between showman entertainer and artist.
  11:33am
Parq:

Oh yeah, Ladies Freakin' First!
  11:36am
Jennique:

Thanks for playing Queen Latifah. This song started it all for me with her. I have to admit I wince when I see her on those Cover Girl and credit card commercials.
  11:36am
Parq:

This record (one of my last new-release vinyl purchases) is like two decades old. Whew.
  11:36am
brian:

give it to em queen!
  11:40am
Cecile:

That's terrible! Save the libraries...
  11:40am
still b/p:

Nice to see fortune favorin' her, but, yes, the gauzy, powdered, generic presentations also make me miss the old Queenitude. Her commercial gain, our loss.
  11:42am
Lil bob:

Save the Jersey City Museum, too!!
  11:42am
dc pat:

WOW, bunch of Malaysian Psychedelic videos via Xeni's brother at BoingBoing: http://bit.ly/dAH0OH

Pennsylvania had the same problem a little while back. My pal Mary created this poster
http://www.justseeds.org/blog/2009/09/sustain_our_libraries_1.html
  11:43am
Cecile:

still b/p - the definition of commercial beauty has widened, thanks to people like Latifah. But it's still way too narrow.
  11:44am
Parq:

Trouble, don't you understand? We will all suffer horribly if an education- and arts-rich budget is balanced on the backs of NJ's large business corporations.
  11:50am
Steve Gugel:

I sent the Gov an email and I don't even live in Jersey anymore. Just because you can be President without knowing how to read or speak (Bush) doesn't mean the rest of us should be deprived. One more reason to hate anyone in power.
  11:51am
Brian:

Libraries and education, generally, are seen as a threat to the Republicans. Reality has a leftist bias, as they say.
  11:55am
kevin:

libraries are socialism in action! of course there's a movement to destroy them
  11:57am
Cecile:

never mind that Andrew Carnegie set up a whole system of them that is still working today.
  11:58am
also brian:

knowledge is half the cattle
  11:58am
Hugh:

Good morning, Trouble, and fellow listeners:
A protest rally is scheduled at the NJ State House on May 5th, to protest the library funding cuts. I'm sorry, I don't have the particular details, so, all you old hippies, (and younger ones too), c'mon down! No Tea Baggers please!
  11:59am
kevin:

yeah, even in Braddock, PA. Carnegies first library, still functioning in a town that has lost like 80% of its population over the last few decades, theres approx 2000 people there now, with a beautiful library
  12:12pm
Lucky:

The rally is Thursday May 6th!
