Listener comments!

  3:05am
Adam:

Hallo, Jesse! Hi, fellow listeners! I'll get it out of the way early: FREE LIBYA! Bahrein, Algeria already moving, and Syria and Iran have change coming, too!
  3:06am
yair yona:

very cool, i planned on playing this Andrew Liles in my own radio show - Sonar. great EP Monster Munch
  3:12am
jj.:

awesome, yair. yeah, great stuff! need to get a copy of my own.
  3:14am
Adam:

This Leticia Servin song is very pretty, JJ. Gotta check out her work.
  3:16am
jj.:

know almost nothing about her. discovered her while i was searching for something else. mexican, contemporary, that's about all i've got.
  3:20am
pierre:

Bonjour everybody
  3:22am
jj.:

bonjour, pierre!
  3:27am
harvey:

delightful early morning set jess! greetings from the low alps.
  3:28am
Marmalade Kitty:

Bonjour!
..Adam, what are your interests with these nations..??
  3:33am
Adam:

Just the interests of a political junkie cheering on transformation abroad an such...hope I don't offend...
  3:33am
Marmalade Kitty:

sorry, of course, ..Freedom, no less!
It's important for all of us.
  3:33am
left foot forward:

perty set, JJ
  3:38am
Adam:

Yes, marvelous song choices! The Guy Clark was hot, and the Malachai reminded me somewhat of the Churchills...you like their work, Yair Yona?
Marmalade Kitty, Jesse: you know I can stray off into God Knows What. I'll try to keep it on a leash tonight.

I am hoping, desperately, that a democratic revolution can change the fate of the Maghreb and the Mashreq, (and perhaps beyond!): and also change the stalemate and hostility of geopolitics there.

Pip, pip.
  3:42am
Marmalade Kitty:

Take it easy, Adam. ..I mean it :)
  3:43am
yair yona:

@Adam - Gene, not Guy.
Re-The Churchills - so in love with their album. National pride in Israel (but only for those who know them).
I even recorded a distorted-fuzzed out version on my slide, of their So Alone Today
  3:52am
Adam:

Whoops, typo on the Clarks! They recorded as Jericho Jones after the controversy over the name Churchills. I love that first album, though! Found them in a Wikipedia article, of all places.

Hope Israel holds up, by the way.
  4:00am
Adam:

...and that Palestine changes for the better, too.

Ok, back to music: good shit, Jesse!
  4:02am
Adam:

I can't come down!
  4:02am
yair yona:

israel is ok, no revolutions here, though I'd be happy if this goverment would wake up for their winter sleep and take advantage of the revolutions all around, to find new fresh leaders to improve the peace process, and sort it out with the Palestines. no one wants this situation to go along, no one wins.

regarding the churchills- the second album, under Jericho Jones was a cool hard rock album but the band had completely changed. they had a third album under the name Jericho, but that was more prog-rock.

check an israeli band called Rockfour, they also covered the Churchills and are treated as one of the biggest Israeli bands, in the contemp. psych genre. really amazing band, trust me.
  4:03am
yair yona:

and Jesse - great songs selection today, like always.
  4:06am
left foot back:

spent the sunday afternoon today-- not playing cards-- but observing paintings of people playin them. Dominoes, checkers.. it was like looking at a Sunday afternoon in a book :-)
  4:09am
pierre:

i want to do some gardening, but i live in a flat.
  4:10am
Adam:

Yair Yona, I need to pick your brain. I'm also looking for other Israeli, Arab and other Levantine psychedelic stuff. Yes, the Jericho Jones tunes are good, but different and by different lineups, agreed. Will have to remember Rockfour...
I've enjoyed Devil's Anvil, who were in New York (and some of whose personnel morphed into Mountain), and John Berberian, Armenian-American oud player.
  4:13am
right foot sideways:

what is this? it's hilarious
  4:13am
jj.:

hey adam, if you're looking for some middle eastern psych, i recommend perusing the catalog of sublime frequencies: http://www.sublimefrequencies.com/
  4:14am
Adam:

This polymorphic medley is ridiculous!
  4:15am
pierre:

sublime frequencies are doing an amazing job
  4:16am
yair:

feel free to pick my brain ;)
The Devil's Anvil is ultra cool.
Sublime Frequency is a great label, but it has more 'world' then psych imho, also for some reason they don't consider israel to be a part of the middle east, no signings of bands from israel - yet.

however, there's a great compilation called Wake Up Scheherazade, with two volumes - you'll dig it. psych from arab countries all around
  4:16am
yair:

and yea - Sublime Frequencies is an amazing label.
  4:19am
pierre:

yeah "Wake Up Scheherazade" is great to.
and if anybody wanted some african/psych tune it is worth it to look up this "The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia In 1970s Nigeria" compilation
  4:20am
yair:

Pierre - you're right, it's a great compilation as well
  4:22am
right foot left:

pierre: in response to your earlier comment, you can make one of those gardens in a bottle -- what are they called.. 'bio' or 'terra' somethings.. Or you know you can build an indoor 'earth room' like walter de maria. Make sure it smells like rich earth & you'll be good :-)

.. FYI.. internet says de maria was in an early band with lou reed & john cale? -- "the druds" -- I didn't kno this.
  4:22am
Adam:

Cool site, thank you! Yeah, I notice a slew of acts from mostly Muslim countries, a bit of Southeast Asia. Afrobeat and Ethiopian soul/jazz revival has been in vogue for a while, as have the other excursions into Third World psych and funk. I've been perusing some of the Latin American stuff for a while, too. Barely getting started on any of the world's regions, though! Amazing what electronic media can harvest for us...
  4:25am
yair:

if any of you is interested in world psych - really, you have to check out The Churchills from 1969 Israel. the guitarist was Rob Haxley who was in The Tornadoes as well.

Also - there was a band here in mid 70's called Zingale, which recorded an album called Peace. if you're into Yes-style prog-rock, seek it out.
  4:25am
pierre:

it is funny (< not the right word, but it is the only one i got) to hear that some psych music can be all about drums/guitars and some is more all drone sound/synth etc... i'm usually a bit lost with the genre of music when it come to psychedelic stuff, but i love them all anyway.

@ right foot left : thanks, i'll search those. i have a few plants, but i'm just complaining that i can't sit a proper garden while listening to FMU
  4:26am
jj.:

yeah, SF are generally more global, but they've done a great job mapping the music of much of the non-israeli middle east. i dig the recent releases, but there are many treasures. though not vintage hippie music music per se, the radio series--cut-up collages of broadcasts--is particularly psychedelic to me.
  4:30am
Marmalade Kitty:

Thanks Jesse, great show!
Just a comment board observation; comments often digress from the music at hand. Whilst the music is the reason everyone tunes in, I find the odd comment sometimes amusing and interesting! For me as a listener, reasonable comments digressing from the obvious musical topic is ok, and cannot possibly detract from the music...
I think the set up is fantastic generally!
  4:31am
zax:

Hey Yair, don't forget Danni Ben Israel with his incredible psych period
  4:32am
Adam:

I too lack gardening capacity in my apartment.
I streamed the Churchills album plus its assorted singles and bonus tracks at grooveshark.com. They don't have everything, but they have many things to try out.

Looking for more vintage hippe or garage or funk acts from beyond the North Atlantic and the Anglosphere--or better said, beyond the more commercial classic rock and soul canon (legitimiately great as much of it is). My searches have been fitful and often distracted, but that's life.

WFMU has it by the bushel, as do key friends of mine from over the years, as well as some of you newer homies. Thank you!
  4:34am
Adam:

...and a self-serving hooray for the odd comment board, from one of its odder commentators!
  4:35am
Adam:

Prog-rock Yes was a favorite in high school: the 1980s pop stuff, not so much. Zingale, shalom!
  4:37am
right foot pointed:

yes me too on the comment board: guilty as charged!
  4:38am
pierre:

Yannick Dauby, just discovered him in the long rally by Scott McDowell, love it.
As for the comments, well guilty to.
  4:38am
Feat Center-Right-Left:

I guess you could say the hand is really on the other foot now.
  4:42am
right foot sweep:

Are you trying to decode my dancestep? Damn: shoulda written them down first: they don't make any sense stream of conscious/comment/ness. It wasn't originally planned to be twister, whoops!
  4:45am
Little Feat and Large Fantasies:

Be the foot...but try not to be a heel. ZING!
  4:46am
pierre:

time to meditate
  4:47am
yair yona:

@ Zax - yea, but his album isn't solid in its quality, it's a nice mish-mash of ideas. some work, some don't.

re-the msg board, that's the fun thing about it - community evolves!
  4:47am
yair yona:

btw - is this the new Barwick album?
  4:48am
jj.:

indeed it is! lots of great (nearly) vocal only pieces.
  4:48am
Om:

Ahmur-uhm-hum, madur-uhm-hum...
  4:49am
arms swing in opposition:

'Little Feat' you sound like a 50s radio drama ;-) my feet are sitting this one out for meditation
  4:49am
Adam:

Pretty...
  4:49am
pierre:

http://asthmatickitty.com/images/juliannabarwick/julianna_barwick_-_credit-carrie_villines.jpg
Julianna Barwick is pretty
  4:52am
Loyal Opposition:

Give us a go....after these messages?
  4:53am
Adam:

She is, Pierre! And I never thought I would associate such beauty with the Monongahela river, Jesse!
  4:55am
greysoul:

Boy - I figured after something as sweet as the Linda Cohen tune that we were destined for absolute metal machine music mayhem or something ...
What do I know about programming?
  4:58am
Cohen & Cohen:

The Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers join to form the Ohio River in Pittsburgh (old stadium, sigh). Yeah, Pittsburgh!
  5:00am
yair yona:

Guys, I wrote a post about the immportance of WFMU and the marathon, please spread the word. http://bit.ly/gHb79F
  5:01am
Adam:

Dude, you really love baseball...sumptuous is good...now I want to watch Ken Burns' "Baseball: the Tenth Inning." See, that's how I keep getting deflected from the search for psych!
  5:06am
two gallops in sequence:

Hey, Greysoul! Well I'd say you've got a sure nicely programmed brain :-)
  5:07am
jj.:

wow, thanks yair! that's wonderful!
  5:10am
bk:

Even though it may be chilly,I will be at Fordham for their baseball home opener this Wednesday in The Bronx.Go Rams
  5:13am
pierre:

i'd like to be a baseball fan, i'd love to support the Red Sox (just because seem to me like a historical club, and i love the logo), but no Baseball in France, only soccer, pouah !
  5:13am
jj.:

wow, bk, that's way more hardcore than i am! right on!
  5:15am
Adam:

Go Cubs! Over 100 years since we've won a league championship, but almost 100 years in one of the last cool baseball stadiums out there! They lose, generally, which explains how a lifelong fan became a history buff, news addict, music archaeologist: anything to dull the pain and avoid the shame...
  5:17am
Adam:

They don't sound especially "Caribbean," but I'm open to Brooklyn-favored irony, post-irony...and the dreaded post-post-irony...
  5:17am
Marmalade Kitty:

Tangled Up In Blue was great! Dylan has such an awkward guitar technique, so difficult to emulate or imitate.
  5:19am
Adam:

Or, Washington, DC-derived post-post-post-irony, according the information superhighway...
  5:19am
bk:

It is a great place to see a game(veiw over outfield fence is The New York Botanical Garden) and admision to the ballpark is free.Great show tonight.
  5:20am
Adam:

Jesse, go to Fordham tonight. You know that you want to.
  5:22am
greysoul:

Nobody has ever credited Bob with inventing the six-stringed accordion.
  5:33am
Marmalade Kitty:

post, post post irony! always makes my brain bleed Its just ironic really!
  5:33am
Lonious Monk:

good morning everyone.
  5:34am
jj.:

sounds like *somebody* needs a post-ironic high colonic tonic!
  5:35am
change lead foot:

Greysoul: That must be from the time Bob daydreamed he was busking on the street, coming into control of his destiny & happened to have 6 fingers?
  5:36am
pierre:

salut Lonious !
  5:36am
Marmalade Kitty:

Thats me! .. just talking to myself
  5:36am
Adam:

Kind sir Jesse, it was you and another mutual friend of ours who first coined the term "post-irony." I found it ironic at the time. Ironic, isn't it? Sonic, phonic, bionic, and chronic, as well.
  5:37am
Marmalade Kitty:

Bonjour ;)
  5:39am
jj.:

i doubt we coined it. assume it was just one o' those things in the air. like the plague, and radio transmissions.
  5:39am
greysoul:

Well, to be precise, he imagined that he wrote about daydreaming he was busking on the street, coming into control of his destiny & happened to have 6 fingers ... but, yeah - pretty much.

There were moments on that "Tangled" that could only have been produced by high-impact six-stringed accordion wheezing.
  5:41am
Marmalade Kitty:

past/ present Ironies will always suffice
  5:43am
Adam:

Maybe not "coined," but you two and me are the only people I've heard use it for the last ten years. Perhaps the women we loved who suffered from hearing about it, too.
  5:45am
jj.:

there was a whole school of post-ironic essays that emerged after 9/11. which, if you'll remember, destroyed irony.
  5:47am
Adam:

Yeah, but you and that friend of ours were chatting about this stuff Before The World Changed. The fall of 2001 was too serious to even call post-ironic, but I'll have to look for those essays.
  5:49am
jj.:

well, there was a certain irony to their post-irony, no doubt. (whoops, here we go again.)
  5:51am
Adam:

Dear God, just found a Slate article using that term from March, 1999--not just before the death of irony, but before the dot com bust? Fucked up. We didn't meet him before the fall.
  5:55am
glide, glide, glide:

G: Nice extension of the mise-en-abyme! I think I did that today: imagined I was daydreaming, but really I was waiting on a train platform.

Interesting intersection with all this modern language talk.
  5:56am
Adam:

Too much of the non-fiction I was reading was simply--serious, verging on humorless--to label it as post-irony: like calling a human a post-embryo.

I heard a far more laughable that I thought was a joke, but turned out to be serious: post-post-modernism. I love it! I like neo-neoism, myself.

Gardens and train platforms. Nice Ronettes, JJ.
  5:58am
yair yona:

Jesse, are you in cave?
  5:59am
greysoul:

Always cool to hang at the intersection, glidester.
  5:59am
Adam:

It's a cave of sight, and sound, and mind. LOVE YOU, JESSE AND WFMU!
  6:00am
Marmalade Kitty:

Funny show :)
  6:01am
clap clap clap:

Yep, G-soul! Going to sleep as you make your day now. Enjoy! Bye, folks
