A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

good day earthlings! today's art is by Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica: they perform Diálogo de Manos whereby their wrists are linked by a Möbius loop. She is brazilian and linked to the tropicalia peeps, although more of a constructivist herself...

“Helio and I are like a glove. He is the outside of the glove, very much linked to the exterior world. I am the inside. And the two of us exist from the moment there is a hand which puts on the glove.” – Lygia Clark

I wisht I had time to go out and just watch the last light this evening.

Tangent Time: A few guitar bars in Los Mozos de Monleon sounded to me like "Love, This Is My Song, " the song that was a hit for Petula Clark and was written by Charlie Chaplin.

How about The Rain Before It Falls by Jonathan Coe?

  10:51am
listener james from westwood:

science friday on npr had a list of science/nonfiction books, suggested by science authors & listeners; all books from the broadcast listed here: http://www.sciencefriday.com/program/archives/201105202

  10:53am
James:

Peter Bognanni's novel The House of Tomorrow details an unlikely friendship between Sebastian, a boy who has lived in a geodesic dome with his grandmother, and Jared a heart-transplant patient with a passion for punk music. A terrific story of the power of music to bring people together. This will make you want to start a band, like hearing a Ramones song for the first time.
  10:53am
listener james from westwood:

the top list is somewhat more current/oriented toward recent releases, but there are probably some gaps to fill from older books in the second list from viewers/commenters, too.
  10:53am
Jennique:

Summer books I highly recommend:
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
Mr. Vertigo by Paul Auster
With by Donald Harington
and my old standard Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  10:55am
Stu:

Kiittos ! " Purge" by Sofie Oksanen , She is amazing !
  10:56am
Prince Philip formerly known as a cypher:

Verwy well done trouble and what do you do for a living? Please do not ask one that question. Ones memory is getting frightfully vague.
  10:56am
Neg-guh-tor:

'Renegade' by Mark E. Smith. Great. He was a tarot card reader for a while for extra money and very interested in the occult. Imagine that!
  10:56am
Lucas:

"The wild detectives" Roberto Bolaño.
  10:59am
Brian in UK:

Any by Niccolo Ammaniti will make you laugh & cry sometimes at the same time.
  11:02am
hamburger:

how many books do you peoples go through in an average year?
  11:04am
βrian:

"It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love."
  11:04am
Jennique:

Wow, great pick DJ Icepack! Sleigh Bells kicks it!
  11:06am
Brian in UK:

Libraries for EVER. F**k Television. It's like a demanding child; unlike radio.
  11:06am
still b/p:

Ah, good. I was just thinking of this song a few minutes ago.
  11:07am
Jennique:

Ah Brian - quoting that book just makes me smile. :)
  11:08am
Adrian in London:

Has anyone here read anything by Steve Erickson? Not the fantasy writer but the LA novelist who wrote Tours of the Black Clock and Amnesiascope. HI work is occasionally compared with Paul Auster's but is much more spectacular and mind-warping. His characters crop up in various books and his take on LA is magical. There's really no other writer like him.
  11:12am
Brian in UK:

Gombrich is such a good History primer for all ages. Then you can move on to his History of Art.
  11:13am
stefica:

i've tried to get through bolano's "the savage detectives" without success yet; but 2666 was great!
  11:15am
stefica:

i recommend "the tiger's wife" by tea obreht.
  11:18am
maja:

i've never read anything by Niccolo Ammaniti but that's gonna change now.
Brian you've made me curious.
Trouble i love your show!
  11:20am
Lucas:

@stefica: i havent read 2666, but many people told me it's great!
  11:24am
ffrr:

2666 is a chore. Sometimes monotonous, othertimes wonderful. Not a summer read, but a good one.
  11:26am
Adrian in London:

Oh, Ammaniti wrote Non Ho Pauro; I saw the film version and liked it very much.
  11:27am
Guuzbourg:

Morning trouble. Thanks for playing Nicolas Comment.
  11:29am
trouble:

o good morning guuzbourg a.k.a mr go on vacation and leave us hanging... we get nervous when you don't post. or maybe just i do. thanks for all the fabbbb music you connect me with via fillessourires.com
  11:29am
trouble:

thank you maja!
  11:31am
J J:

Wow. Comments are reading like some Amazon Listmania thing. Summer reads the topic? Blue Movie by Terry Southern. Found it in a $1 bin. Hilariously bawdy. An award winning Hollywood director decides he wants to shoot the greatest porn film ever.
  11:32am
Brian in UK:

J J better send that one to Station Manager!!
  11:35am
Kenzo:

Image: Katherine Hepburn heading away on the train back home at the very end of Summertime.
  11:36am
Adrian in London:

I know you weren't after page-turners but for trashy can't-put-em-down books I really like Lee Child. The character, Reacher, is a 6ft5 well-built ex-Army bloke; teeny tiny Tom Cruise has been lined up to play him in a film.
  11:37am
Ben W:

London loves you, Trouble!
  11:40am
trouble:

and i love london!
  11:42am
Lucas:

This song is great!!!
  11:45am
stefica:

i read 2666 in the summer.
  11:46am
βrian:

"J'ai faim ! J'ai faim !"
  11:46am
David Baker:

St Albans ( a few miles north of London, England) loves you Trouble xxx
  11:47am
Lucas:

@Stefica: it was a nice reading under the sun? The wild detectives, it depends on the language youre reading i think
  11:48am
Mike East:

I was listening on the ride into the city. Great show, Trouble. Get that kid some lunch!
  11:48am
Brian in UK:

Brian Mathew was doing the intro to the Kinks if anyone is interested.
Frightfully good show, trouble.
  11:55am
trouble:

st albans we love you!
  11:56am
trouble:

  11:57am
βrian:

In Vermont, that's pronounced "Snall Buns."
  11:58am
Brian in UK:

By the way I live in Watford 'bout six miles from St Albans. Crazy eh!
  12:01pm
stefica:

Lucas, Yes, in English it is published as Savage Detectives. I don't read under the sun, alas. It is too bright!
  9:59pm
Leigh:

'Synthetic Worlds' - Esther Leslie, about the invention of neon during WWII in Germany
  6:01pm
Marie:

Confederacy of Dunces (hilarity set in New Orleans), The Color of Water (crime, detective, mystery set in Sicily), and maybe most summer-oriented of all is Midsummer Night by Uwe Timm (is translated from German, set in the newly united Berlin!)
