Favoriting July 27, 2011: URGE OVERKILL live set!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

It would be impossible, or at least ill-advised, to write a musical history of the '90s without including a chapter on Urge Overkill. Now, nearly 16 years after their last album was released, original members Nash Kato and Eddie "King" Roeser along with Mike "Hadji" Hodgkiss (Gaza Strippers) and Brian Quast (Cherry Valence, Polvo) have released a brand new Urge album, Rock & Roll Submarine. The band recently wrapped up a two-week tour that included a visit to the WFMU studios for a special acousti-lectric set of some songs from the new album as well as a few selections from their Geffen and Touch & Go releases.

You wouldn't think there's a 15 year or so gap since they were well-known -- this goes very well with what I know of their prior output...

  10:08pm
warrant:

you don't mean a certain flavor of pie, by chance?
  10:09pm
efd:

Julie, I have songs about neither pie nor cake. Settle down, Warrant.

Joe, I forgot about the Allen Oldies Band version! I think I still would have played the original though, honestly. At least tonight.

  10:33pm
Joe B:

Dexter better than ever!
  10:38pm

  10:38pm
cheri:

,,,,,wondering if julie is still here.
  10:38pm
warrant:

@kingpenguin: Eventually, coroners.
  10:41pm
wikipediac:

The Elvis Costello & The Attractions version was first issued as the B-side of Lowe's "American Squirm" and was credited to Nick Lowe and His Sound. At the time Lowe was Elvis Costello's producer, and he produced this track as well. When the song became a hit, it was quickly appended as the last track to the U.S. edition of Costello's album Armed Forces.
  10:42pm
Julie:

@Cheri yes I read my email. I talked about my trip on the air, and I really don't want to talk about The Cake anymore, okay?
  10:42pm
also from wikipedia ("labour of lust" article):

The American version of this record had a slightly different track listing, with "Endless Grey Ribbon" being deleted and replaced by the UK single A-side, "American Squirm." The latter song includes members of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, namely Elvis on backing vocals, Bruce Thomas on bass and Pete Thomas on drums. Credited to "Nick Lowe and His Sound," the B-side of this single was Elvis & The Attractions' version of the Lowe-penned "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?" "Endless Grey Ribbon" did get an American release as the B-side of the "Cruel to Be Kind" single.
  10:43pm
Julie:

Go to EFD's facebook page! He gives good radio.
  10:45pm
Amanda:

Those Wikipediac/s beat me to the punch while I was busy scooping out cat litter. :-) I have that American Squirm single; Lowe is on the sleeve posing with Costello's guitar that has the latter's name on it.
  10:46pm
Joe B:

another dictators connection! good one!
  10:46pm
cat litter:

oh, so what are we, chopped liver or something?
  10:47pm

Best party cake I ever made involved 'cat litter' crumbs & strategically placed semi-melted tootsie rolls served in a litter pan with a pooper scoop utensil...
I LOVED that cake.
@Julie, I also like the Coathangers!
@Evan - the latest Blitzen Trappers may be right up your alley - really evolved from earlier stuff - a couple of songs made me think instantly of you.

re the two Facebook pages, I think Osvi means my regular personal page that I've had all along, and the new show page I set up. There are probably about a hundred people I'm "friends" with who I have no idea who they are (I know that's improper english) so I want to have another gathering place for listeners besides my personal page.
  11:25pm
Julie:

Agreed..It's a great idea. We need to get Kurt to do one too
  11:27pm

Not on facebook except for work related necessary fake persona - grumble. Twitter's good for finding food trucks. Miss alt. groups & subscription lists. Bah humbug!
I think, perhaps I'm mostly missing Honking :-( The new bug in my life has big fangs and no personality.

  11:45pm

  11:56pm
Holly in NC:

Apropos of nothing here, this real life request made me smile - you KNOW I'm bringing melon to my fave museum tomorrow! :
The Museum needs watermelons to help Ursula, our 21 year-old black bear, take her daily medicine. Can you help? Ursula is having some lameness and ataxia (wobbliness) in her rear legs, and we're treating her for that. Her medication dissolves on the juicy melon, and she takes it well this way.
And the other four bears love watermelons, too!
The Museum needs 2 to 3 watermelons per day from now through the end of August. You're invited to think about us when you're shopping, pick up a watermelon and drop it off at the Museum front desk! Thanks in advance for your help, and feel free to cross-post.
  11:56pm
Danne D:

G'night cheri.

Thanks Holly, I'm hanging in there. This really is feeling like a call the dentist tomorrow thing. Something feels not in the right place as it were.

@marathon man - believe me I'm well acquainted with trips to the dentist unfortunately. I have more crowns than Henry V :(
  11:57pm
Marathon Man:

So many crowns? I dub thee King Danne I
