Listener comments!

  9:04pm
G:

Quite the little JGT to EFD transition there!
  9:13pm
Amanda:

Final summer set of 2011? Are we to hear Starbreaker???
  9:16pm
Amanda:

Thank you for your attention in this matter.
  9:16pm
john:

Hoping this would turn up!
  9:16pm
efd:

I was too busy cueing it up to see your comment!
  9:20pm
bigsigsputnik:

I am also afraid of the Cuisinart!
  9:22pm
G:

since 1974?
  9:25pm
bigsigsputnik:

Well, maybe 1984.
  9:26pm
12539:

Evan, I think your campaign is working. I went to the record store to buy that Starbreaker 7" and they were sold out!
  9:29pm
Dave B:

Hey EFD and the rest of the Funkonians!

Dave B checkin in. Love that RIAA track (and anything they do)
  9:30pm
G:

@12539: In fact, the whole 45 section was gone. In fact, the whole vinyl section was gone. In fact, the whole nationwide record store chain had closed.
  9:31pm
john:

Perhaps the closest Magazine ever got to sherbet was "Permafrost," which was, upon further review, really rather unsummery.
  9:32pm
Marc:

Nice! The ultimate Summer Set
  9:34pm
Kat:

Followed by the ultimate introduction to "Thirteen Women."
  9:34pm
Bakers Dozen o B------:

We are very summery :-)
  9:42pm
got goobs:

oh yeah!
  9:45pm
Down in NC:

I've just recently discovered WFMU, listened to Julie and Clay during their Irene marathon, they were great. This is my first Funk Davies Show, love the music, you have a new fan!!!
  9:46pm
Marc:

Now it's the cool chick singer segment...me like
  9:46pm
efd:

What up, got goobs! And hi everyone! Thanks for listening and commenting!

12539, I feel so validated!
  9:50pm
glenn:

hey, down in n.c.- us up here in t.o. feel the same way.
  9:51pm
Amanda:

WTG on that entire set, Pleasure Kills song most 'specially.
  9:54pm
G:

@Down in NC: There are at least a couple other fairly frequent commenters from NC here at EFD's show board. They'll show up in comments later, or another week soon...
  9:55pm
john:

Funk get ready to roll.
  9:58pm
efd:

Leave my funk alone!

Down in NC, thanks very much! Happy to have you as a new listener! And thanks to you too, Amanda!
  9:58pm
ScottC:

Nuns cover? Or is it Jane Miro?
  10:00pm
ScottC:

Nuns meet the Voidoids!!
  10:02pm
Danne D:

Yay! :) Sparks!

Hi Funk Fans :)

Heading to Vega$ tomorrow and trying to get some work done so I may not comment too much.

Welcome, Down in NC - FMU is a wonderful thing - enjoy )

Yay Amanda is here :)

Hi to all the regulars and irregulars and greeting to Sir EFD.
  10:02pm
Dave B:

SPARKS??!

Angst In My Pangst!
  10:03pm
john:

I love Sparks, including this very song, but it's a little disconcerting how sometimes they can sound like a slightly less unhip Queen.
  10:03pm
Down in NC:

Why are there not more places to here music like this? It's actually interesting. Maybe I've never looked in the right place.
  10:04pm
glenn:

queen can only gaze up at sparks hipness.
  10:05pm
glenn:

or perhaps the hipness of sparks.
  10:07pm
Dave B:

"she's very sparkly....

...very sparkly"
  10:07pm
Julie:

aw man I missed starbreaker
  10:08pm
efd:

On the plus side, you haven't missed Lene Lovich.

Ooh! Spoiler alert!
  10:09pm
glenn:

amanda and julie together? cosmic wfmu awesome chick overload.
  10:09pm
Dave B:

We're in trouble now...

It's the Funk Police!
  10:09pm
john:

I did say "LESS unhip Queen," though to be fair, it's hard to think of anyone who isn't. Well, maybe The Strokes.
  10:10pm
glenn:

oh. oops. now i feel slightly less unsmrt.
  10:11pm
Amanda:

Lene Lovich! Julie! Everything!
  10:12pm
Julie:

Amandaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
  10:12pm
glenn:

oops again. MORE unsmrt.
  10:14pm
cheri:

hi there evan,,julie & danne have you got any special labor day weekend plans yet?? danne how was your vacay?? i hope you had a great time danne!!!
  10:16pm
G:

Larry's King in a Skirt has arrived.
  10:16pm
PB:

@glenn, is that t.o. as in Toronto? Toronto is my hometown and although I haven't lived there for almost 20 years, i do recall a few of the college stations (CIUT - University of Toronto) and CKLN (Ryerson) being pretty good. Having said that, there is no station around like 'FMU.
  10:17pm
glenn:

yep. ckln was forced to shut the doors about 4 or 5 months ago.
  10:17pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Evan - and hi Down in NC, glad you're here!
Julie - your show with Clay did indeed rock ;-)
  10:17pm
john:

Varitek parks one in the bullpen!
  10:18pm
Danne D:

LOL :)
  10:18pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--Glenn Tilbrook birthday today--no birthday tribute?
  10:18pm
Danne D:

What's worse is I've heard this before...
  10:19pm
Greg:

HA HA HA! Agnostics/atheists unite!
  10:19pm
G:

Bible Belt Booty Babe?
  10:19pm
Holly in NC:

@Down in NC -
Do check wxdu (durham) and wxyc (chapel hill) as complimentary adjuncts to your wfmu listening!
  10:20pm
Danne D:

I like 'em leather and bound
  10:20pm
Down in NC:

This one would go over great down here in the Bible Belt
  10:20pm
efd:

Hi Michael - I was unaware! I'll see if I can work something in later.
  10:20pm
Danne D:

whoa - a shout out for the Apocrypha
  10:21pm
Stevel:

Tuned in just in time. Praise the Lord!
  10:21pm
cheri:

danne?? i hope you had a great vacay!!
  10:21pm
PB:

Uh Evan, what is this?
  10:22pm
NWS:

Warning! Hurricane Cheri!
  10:22pm
Down in NC:

Thanks Holly I'm in High Point do you think I can get them over the air
  10:23pm
cheri:

so evan,,julie & danne got any special weekend plans?
  10:24pm
Danne D:

Thanks Cheri. North Carolina was fun. Heading to Vegas tomorrow.

Honestly, I think the Baby Got Book parody was cleverly done. Unfortunately good (non-Gospel) Christian music is pretty rare (but not unheard of - see Danielson)
  10:24pm
glenn:

when did vacation become vaycay and conversation become convo? i feel i'm missing out on the dumbing down of the english language.
  10:26pm
Valley Girl:

"Vacation" is *so* much work to say, duh!
  10:26pm
glenn:

and don't even get me started on lol, fachrissake.
  10:27pm
Holly in NC:

Catching up here, Evan...
10 minutes after the last time you played Starbreaker I espied someone downloading 'Sound of Summer' from my soulseek account ... and yes, said person had been listening to your show, & in fact is one of your fellow djs!
I really like the new Ettes lp. And Ivan Julian, I kinda assumed his lp w/b lame. I was SO wrong!
  10:27pm
Julie:

Thank you Holly!
  10:27pm
efd:

On the other hand, today I saw someone use the word "efforting" twice.
  10:28pm
efd:

alright, good to know I am creating demand in the marketplace! :)
  10:29pm
Holly in NC:

@Down In NC -
Sadly, no. You'll have to catch 'em via this grand world wide web thingy ;-)
  10:29pm
cheri:

that's cool danne,,i hope you strike it rich!!
evan & julie no plans for the weekend yet??
  10:31pm
glenn:

jesus cheri, can't you take a hint?
  10:31pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

I forgot how great and different this record sounded then (and still sounds now)
  10:32pm
efd:

Michael, I have to (and I will) credit WFMU's Dave Mandl for tweeting about this LP earlier today and putting the bug in my ear.
  10:32pm
Kat:

@Michael - me too! Sounded great following the Liminanas.
  10:33pm
T-Zero:

As far as I'm concerned, you could play the entire lovich album.
  10:34pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Kat & EFD--there is an entire Lene Lovich concert from Studio 54 (circa 1980?) on Youtube--it's more than an hour but well worth seeing
  10:34pm
dave:

my power just came back on a few hours ago after being out since early sunday morning and "noisy song" was EXACTLY what i needed to hear. thanks!
  10:34pm
Down in NC:

I just put WXDU on my iTunes, but I'm staying here tonight
  10:36pm
Kat:

Michael, I will check that out! I was lucky enough to see her live in Chicago, 1981 or 2.
  10:37pm
Joe B:

why would you assume the Ivan julian Lp would be lame? does not compute ...
  10:37pm
Stevel:

So, lots of new listeners. That's great!. Think there are more than 12? Less that 14?
  10:38pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Kat--the Lovich show is great and a great time capsule--Thomas Dolby plays keyboards pre Blinded Me with Science, and Jim Fouratt (who ran Danceteria in NY) introduces the show
  10:39pm
Danne D:

That Cute Lepers song was excellent
  10:39pm
Dave B:

tappin out for now.

It's been a mad, mad, mad, mad, mad, mad week...
  10:40pm
Holly in NC:

@Dave -
how cool!

@Down in NC -while I'm closely affiliated with 'xdu. you're currently making the right choice :-)

@Joe b - Age. Very few people keep their edge.

Everyone - y'all realize we have to stay up way too late tonight for Noah's show EGOTRIPPIN !!
  10:41pm
Danne D:

@Down in NC - have you seen the 10+ years worth of archived shows yet?

Here's the most recent archives:
http://www.wfmu.org/recentarchives.php

Each show has it's own page full of archived shows - for example here's Evan's:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/ED
  10:42pm
Greg:

Evan, I didn't know that you worked for Stiff America... very cool!
  10:43pm
John L.:

Hey, Joe B. I had my doubts about the Julian LP when I first heard about it. Maybe because he hadn't made a solo record and I hadn't given him much thought. Now it's one of my favorites of the year.
  10:43pm
Danne D:

Paterson Silks. Now closed:

http://nymag.com/listings/stores/paterson_silks03/
  10:43pm
Danne D:

Evan's show is but scratching the surface of his coolness, I believe, Greg.
  10:45pm
Down in NC:

@Danne D - I'll check the archived stuff out thats go to be alot Thanks

@Holly in NC - I'm not a UNC fan, I'm sure the radio is fine but I'm a Duke fan
  10:47pm
efd:

someday I'll tell you all the story of how the president of Stiff America tested his office sound system with "Fantasy" by Aldo Nova.

Actually that's pretty much the story right there.
  10:47pm
Holly in NC:

I do love me some red Mass.
Any other Canadian bands coming up, Evan...? '
@Down in NC -
Don't even MENTION the tarholes. I'm a Blue Devil fan through & through. But I *have* to give props to xyc.
  10:47pm
Julie:

Plans for the weekend? I figured I'd spend it sleeping on the floor of studio C
  10:48pm
Julie:

as far as Rat songs go..I really like Dave Davies's Rats..(no relation)
  10:49pm
Holly in NC:

Dogbowl's "Rat Attacks Flan" is my fave rat song
  10:50pm
Julie:

oooh this is cool
  10:50pm
Holly in NC:

I'm so glad Jeff & Jane are getting a lot of airplay.
  10:51pm
cheri:

well evan & julie i guess i'm not wanted in here tonight so keep on rocking guys!!! good night
  10:51pm
Julie:

How did I not KNOW these people? First the Lovich album now THIS. I am a bad music fan.
  10:51pm
Greg:

Aldo Nova?!? Stiff was the antithesis to Aldo Nova et al. How utterly incongruous!
  10:52pm
Kat:

Julie, you and Clay were amazing last weekend. I came home early Saturday night and wondered if WFMU was on, ended up falling asleep to your show, woke up and you were STILL ON. Troupers.
  10:52pm
efd:

Julie, it's funny you say that about this J&J Hudson, considering what I have cued up next...
  10:53pm
Vegas:

What's the over/under on the exact minute when cheri comes back with one more thing like freakin' Columbo?
  10:53pm
Julie:

@Kat thank you... it was the goldfish and cherry coke
  10:54pm
Julie:

darnit Davies how MANY new old things am I going to have to seek out today because of you and Mandl
  10:54pm
efd:

Greg, exactly! But I have to say, that Aldo Nova album sounds freekin' fantastic at loud volume on a quality stereo!

I think it may also have been a demonstration of Bob Clearmountain's technical prowess.
  10:55pm
Julie:

oooh I was just thinking about asking you for Black Ice..I played them this week too (I think..it's all a blur)
  10:55pm
Julie:

Columbo was cool
  10:56pm
efd:

I'd think you played just about everything in the building this week!
  10:56pm
Holly in NC:

@Julie -
You are not!
And wouldn't it be horrible if there were no more musical discoveries to be made?
  10:56pm
Stevel:

Julie: A blur? Surprised you're conscious. Nice overnight work on the storm. .
  10:56pm
Julie:

no. I didn't play any Jandek.
  10:57pm
Holly in NC:

Oh, now see I don't know this (Black Ice) & I REALLY like
  10:57pm
Julie:

@Steve thank you, sir. I slept..um..yesterday. :)
  10:57pm
Julie:

This Black Ice is so cool..no pun intended.
  10:57pm
Jandek:

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
  10:57pm
efd:

Greg, the next one's for you!
  11:03pm
Greg:

EFD, I am shocked and honored!
  11:06pm
erika:

i like your show too much! stop! and by stop i mean keep going
  11:07pm
Julie:

Jeff & Jane were the Rentals
  11:09pm
Julie:

not to be confused with the Rentals
  11:10pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Shouldn't Les Savy Fav be playing at Le Poisson Rouge?
  11:10pm
?:

?
  11:10pm
Holly in NC:

Yes, not THOSE Rentals!
  11:11pm
Duh:

NOT to be confused with The Condo Fucks
  11:11pm
Holly in NC:

http://www.darkentriesrecords.com/?p=1338
  11:12pm
Holly in NC:

Duh, you can be ringbearer to Jandek's flower girl!
  11:13pm
john:

Now I want to hear the Thunderclap Newman version of Lady Marmalade.
  11:13pm
Kat:

WHAT. Labelle covered Thunderclap Newman?!
  11:14pm
Danne D:

The Revolution has been having trouble selling its broadcasting rights.
  11:14pm
Down in NC:

Thanks to EFD for great music, thanks to Julie for introducing me to FMU this weekend (this weekend was the first time I listened to FMU, y'all were great) and thanks to Holly in NC for the great info...GO BLUE DEVILS
  11:14pm
Kat:

...And mashed it up with Gil Scott-Heron. *head asplode*
  11:14pm
tranewreck:

thunderclap newman by way of GSH.
this one is new to me....thanks!
  11:14pm
Duh:

@Holly: And you are obviously the wedding planner :-P
  11:15pm
Duh:

The revolution will not be getting residuals.
  11:15pm
VY:

Revo-what-now?
  11:16pm
john:

So cool that it makes the entire concept of the mash-up obsolete 30 years before it was invented. And thank heaven for that.
  11:19pm
Holly in NC:

I firmly believe Bill Withers is the most underrated 70s soul artist. And this is a great lp.
  11:21pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--I met James Gadson the other night (he's the drummer on most of the Bill withers records)
  11:21pm
Danne D:

g'night Down in NC!
  11:22pm
john:

I firmly believe Holly is absolutely right on both counts!
  11:23pm
Stevel:

Listening and just realizing how wide this show is swinging, (successfully too!)
  11:24pm
Stevel:

...and circling back!! God I love good radio.
  11:25pm
Emily:

this is a good song
  11:26pm
Duh:

Wipe Out!
  11:29pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--that would be "add" justments
  11:29pm
Stevel:

Creepy Wipe out!
  11:29pm
Danne D:

Evan what do you mean you haven't seen that documentary that I haven't seen!!!
  11:29pm
Duh:

yep
  11:30pm
Stevel:

I also have not seen the documentary in question, however, some of us are held to higher standards.
  11:31pm
john:

Totally different Withers doc comment--we saw it and both walked away thinking we'd just seen a film about maybe the nicest all-around human being we'd ever come across.
  11:31pm
Documentary:

I haven't seen myself either
  11:33pm
Holly in NC:

@John -
You've just put that doc at the top of my things to do/see list!
  11:37pm
Holly in NC:

@Documentary -
Helps if you stop gazing in the punch bowl.
Though the swirly melting sherbet designs are pretty...
  11:45pm
Danne D:

I gotta pack up gang. Thanks for another top notch show, Evan!

Have a great weekend everyone!
  11:46pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

nicely done efd
  11:46pm
Holly in NC:

EFD, you have an amazing talent for finding & non-ironically & appreciatively sharing the major labels' 'almost-made its' greatest songs. Big props!
  11:48pm
John L.:

Happy Birthday to Glenn Tilbrook!!!
  11:48pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

amazing that they could reproduce that tom sound so well
  11:48pm
VY:

Twofer Wednesday - I heard "Messed Around" on the local indie station this aft
  11:50pm

Holly, thanks very much for that compliment - I really appreciate!

Michael (or anyone), any insight on these re-recordings that are so close to the originals? Is it a way for the artist to release the songs when they don't have rights to the original masters?

I think that's pretty much what this Squeeze album was about--letting Tilbrook and Difford make some money off their own songs.

VY:

I've got a "novelty song" compilation CD that has an alt version of Midnight at the Oasis - I suspect your suspicion is correct EFD
  11:55pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Hit the anil on the head John and EFD-the record companies were licensing the master recordings of the Squeeze songs and Squeeze figured we could remake them and license them cheaper and keep all the money instead of sharing it with the record company (this practice is quite common these days, it was especially prevalent when Rock Band and Guitar Hero were licensing tracks)

This Shark 7in is another fave, thanks, Evan!

Shelley explains:

"The original records now sound like demos," Shelley explains in the press materials. "These new versions, honed by years on the road, showcase the songs as we know they should be, the way we know audiences love to hear them."

John L.:

Pete Shelley is wrong.

Hint:

@John L.: Money alters people's thinking process. Occasionally.

Michael from the Left Coast:

Agreed John L--especially the vocal processing on the high notes. Other than that it's not bad--just that the originals are better

VY:

@John L - He CAN touch it?

12539:

Great show, Evan!

Holly in NC:

Agree with 12539!

(Archive listening) This DMZ demo just woke me up out of a very solid, exhausted doze, which even 13 women barely penetrated. LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
