Listener comments!

  9:03pm
G:

Scorpio! fall 1971
  9:06pm
yoyo:

woohoo starting with the 70s!
  9:06pm
PB:

Evan "Funk" Davies living up to his middle name with the first track of the night!
  9:07pm
G:

is the channel with the vocals out?
  9:11pm
T-Zero:

Good questoin, G. For me, so far it all sounds like it's being muted under a blanket.
  9:13pm
efd:

how are you guys listening? is a channel missing or the sound is poor quality? (or both?)
  9:13pm
G:

Unless it was an artistic effect, on "chrome" it sounded like where the stereo mix has the main vocals in one channel, and a background echo of the main vocals in another channel, but only the latter channel was coming through.
  9:14pm
Joe B:

definitely see Dennis Coffey if you can - he is amazing live!
  9:17pm
T-Zero:

I'm listening on the 128 stream. I had to quit using the 20k windows stream because it was too choppy.

But it's sounding better now.
  9:19pm
G:

sounds like efd's limbering up for singles going steady...

and at least a certain team can't lose tonight...!
  9:19pm
efd:

thanks T-Zero.

G, were you just noticing something during the Chrome song? All OK now?
  9:19pm
G:

just chrome, rest sounding great
  9:20pm
KP:

Evan, would you say the new marathon format is Silent but Deadly?
  9:21pm
john:

Hey Evan...great opening set! Oh, and it just sounded Chromey to me.
  9:22pm
Sybil:

Good evening all!

EFD, Thanks for playing "Don't You Care". I forgot how much I like it.
And belated Happy birthday!
  9:23pm
PB:

I wouldn't think it possible to follow Richard Hell with the Buckinghams, but it kinda worked.
  9:23pm
Sybil:

PB: it did, indeed.
  9:24pm
Stevel:

Thanks for playing Blank Generation while I was wrangling with a Verizon rebate. The song offers a great deal more hope than dealing with that soulless behemoth.
  9:24pm
G:

if that chrome track had been on some shows, i would have assumed "artistic effect" -- but coming after coffey, it sounded like the main vocal channel was out!
  9:26pm
efd:

Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! Notekillers live set coming right up!
  9:30pm
Tattletale:

I wonder if a certain member of a certain acronymic musical group knows that anecdotes were told about him by callers on Tom S's show last night. Not negative anecdotes, comedic ones...
  9:33pm
Jim Devoid:

Funk for President!
  9:33pm
Desperate Voter:

How about veep?
  9:37pm
efd:

If nominated I shall not run; if elected I shall not serve.
  9:38pm
Disc:

If cued, I shall not play

j/k!
  9:43pm
efd:

Our special Silent But *Lively* Fundraiser is underway for the entire month of October! I'm not going to talk about it, but I'm surely going to comment about it. If you enjoy my show, or WFMU in general (or both), please take a moment to make a pledge using the handy form at the top left of your browser! Thank you!
  9:56pm
Dave B:

  9:57pm
efd:

thanks DB!
  9:58pm
efd:

(and by "thanks" I mean "hi!")
  10:01pm
Dave B:

iknowwhatchamean....

And thank YOU

(ifyaknowwhatimean)

;-)
  10:11pm
Dave B:

oh, and big ups to Diane Kamikaze!

TORA! TORA! TORA!

BANZAI!
  10:12pm
Snortley:

Great set! Reminiscent of Glen Branca.
  10:13pm
Holly in NC:

Enjoying the Notekillers set!

BTW, Steve Jobs has passed on
  10:13pm
efd:

Good ear, Snortley - they played with Branca back in the day.

Heard that just before the show, Holly. Very sad news.
  10:14pm
d1st:

Never realized how much this sounds like Scorpio!
  10:15pm
efd:

And we come full circle! :)
  10:18pm
Dave B:

i hope it wasnt a result of the luke warm reception iPhone 4S caused...

Even Hitler was pissed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lxn6Ag0mmhs
  10:27pm
Dave B:

... but it is sad news. Sorry for a bad attempt at making light of it. That's how I cope.
  10:27pm
Holly in NC:

@Dave B -
great link :-) Thank you.
  10:31pm
Stevel:

Jobs: Huge impact on possibly anything tech related. Not shocked at his passing. I'm getting a bit too jaded/realistic/old? for that. Still, impressive what a person or group of people can do.
  10:31pm
Holly in NC:

I am not an Apple person, and in fact REALLY DISLIKE and don't use iTunes. That said, I think Mr. Jobs was a genius.
  10:37pm
PB:

For a music lover like me (and I suspect the vast majority of FMU listeners) the iPod is an incredible invention.
  10:40pm
Dave B:

i STILL can't stream WFMU on my Newton....

Whats up with that!?!?!
  10:41pm
efd:

Dave, remember that emergency Newton run we had to make in 1996 or 95?
  10:41pm
Stevel:

Newton: OK, no one is perfect.
  10:43pm
Dave B:

Oh yeah Evan! I recall a chinese delivery guy clipping me on bway/48th or so.

I STILL have one of the Newton 2000's from the VMA event at Bryant park. It still works!
  10:44pm
Dave B:

(don't tell SR)
  10:46pm
Dave B:

(and the Newt was a Sculley skunkworks - Jobs killed it when he came back to the helm)
  10:48pm
Joe B:

yeah, the long gones!
  10:49pm
efd:

Thanks for the tip on that one, Joe!
  10:50pm
Holly in NC:

@PB - I would indeed love an iPod. Someday...
Meanwhile, to keep from being crabby I find it useful to reflect on how much cool music I learn about since I often have no choice but to listen to other people's selections. Very lucky to have access to decent radio!
  10:55pm
Dave B:

@Holly - amen to that!

While the iPod is a nice innovation, it and the walkman before it kind of robbed society of the "community" or "social" aspect of music consumption, in my opinion.

THANK HEAVENS for (little girls)..

err.. uhh...

I mean "Thank heavens for WFMU!"
  10:56pm
Mike Sin:

I quite enjoyed that Notekillers' set!
  10:56pm
JMD:

But no matter what you're gonna play Dad by NoMeansNo, right?
  10:59pm
Joe B:

thanks for the plug EFD, forgot to mention that Greg Dulli is also on that new Mighty Fine LP
  11:03pm
Stevel:

Dave B makes a good point. (About communal listening, not little girls)(really). Waiting for the time when tech brings us together instead of helping us define our differences.
  11:03pm
KP:

is that the same Joe Belock of Three Card Monte fame heard here Thursday's 12-3 p.m. and who is running his own Silent but Deadly Fall Fundraiser?
  11:09pm
Holly in NC:

Wildly off tangent -
Last night one of my favorite customers asked me to recommend a really nice bottle of wine. His usual price range is <$10 [he's a Durham public school teacher as well frugal in general], so when I hesitantly recommended a fave of mine @ $14.99 & he immediately said 'ok" I of course inquired as to the occasion. He was off to see Peter Frampton doing Frampton Comes Alive @ the DPAC - 'cuz he'd seen the original tour in '76 in NYC!
Just struck me.
I of course still have my original vinyl ;-)
  11:10pm
Joe B:

judging how I did in the regular marathon this year, silent is the key word
  11:10pm
Stevel:

Holly: I'd have thought Boone's Farm would be the perfect retro touch for Frampton.
  11:11pm
j-No:

I can't believe it! I haven't heard Wazmo since 1977 or whenever! amazing! thanks. didn't he do the original "Jet Boy/Jet Girl"?
  11:12pm
SF Wazmo:

Yep, still have the Wazmo LP. That song reminds me of a long-passed friend who used to sing it all the time....
  11:13pm
Dave B:

@ Stevel - after boones farm, you'd be asking yourself

"Do I Feel AWWW-WITE?"

And it would sound like it was being processed by a talk box....

WAAAAAAAAAW!
  11:13pm
William Swan, Jr.:

You are broadcasting through only the right speaker.
  11:13pm
Holly in NC:

@Steve1 -
This comment board works! See especially last week

@Steve1 again -
well, we don't sell Strawberry Hill. We do sell Mas Donis Barrica. ;-)
  11:17pm
Stevel:

Dave B: I knew there was a reason I loved that song.

Holly: re. wine selection. Can't have everything.

re. anti socialness: If you are referring to the communal nature of this board, I am in full agreement.
  11:20pm
jaycjay:

I'm a bit late to the conversation (which occurred at 10:55), but I'd argue that the iPod certainly can be a tool for "community" or "social" spreading of music. I've been to any number of parties or bars or whatever where an mp3 player belonging to an attendee was plugged in and everyone was able to listen to it. These devices make it very simple to share one's complete music collection, as opposed ot just carrying a few disks to an event. And for what it's worth, I have an mp3 player but it's not an iPod. I will probably never buy one of those things.
  11:23pm
Stevel:

jaycjay:Good illustration of how it is not the tech that drives things, but the user.
  11:25pm
Randy in NC:

Love this Eleanor Friedberger!
  11:27pm
Holly in NC:

New Limes? Psych!
  11:28pm
john wesley coleman:

The Limes!! my best friend! im doing dishes to this right now in texas
  11:28pm
jaycjay:

Exactly, Stevel. It is true that the tech in question enables people to isolate themselves from whatever other music (or other sound) might be around them, and many choose that option. But it also does make sharing easier for those who choose to use it that way... and the more I think about it the more I tihnk I've probably heard more new stuff from friends in the "iPod era" than in the "come over to my place and listen to some records" era.
  11:30pm
Holly in NC:

@john wesley coleman -
are you "the" jwc? If so, big fan!
  11:30pm
yoyo:

something about this guys voice sounds very minneapolis to me
  11:31pm
john wesley coleman:

yeah
  11:34pm
efd:

Hey john, nice to have you here! I just played a cut from your record last week... glad you caught the Limes!
  11:35pm
Holly in NC:

So, actually reissue of old Limes, which I just ordered from Goner.

@JWC - Have been enjoying Little Miss Keith Richards!
  11:35pm
KP:

14th St. hopefully soon my new home! #EscapefromLongIsland
  11:36pm
KP:

Thanks efd for easy math questions tonight. could not take the long division ones with all this going on.
  11:37pm
Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :) thanks for a great show Evan (I have to catch some on archive)

I can't see replies right now but wanted to give you a shout out. Will be on my computer later for Noah's show. Enjoy everyone :)
  11:38pm

  11:42pm
Stevel:

Holly, Dave B, jaycjay and of course, efd: Out for the evening.

Pleasure, as always.
  11:44pm
jaycjay:

Good luck KP! I did a few years on LI myself, foolishly thinking a shorter commute to a work assignment there would outweigh the actual living on Long Island. No, escape from there is the only answer.
  11:47pm
Randy in NC:

@jaycjay, I agree!
  11:49pm
jaycjay:

That was long enough ago that it's only a vague bad dream now... nine years of back-in-Brooklyn happiness, and counting!
  11:54pm
Holly in NC:

@jwc - will do (& will of course pay postage + whatever else)

I love this comment board, efd, and wfmu!

Now, if someone would come over & do _my_ dirty dishes, I'd go from happy to ecstatic ... for about 7 minutes 'til Noah's last show :-(
  11:55pm
efd:

Thanks everyone for listening and commenting! Greatly appreciated, always. Don't forget we're doing our silent fundraiser all month - please make a pledge via the box at the top left! (that goes for you lurkers, too!)

JWC, I'll get in touch! :)
  11:57pm
Dave B:

See y'all next week!
  11:57pm
Holly in NC:

This is quite the kick ass dave clark cover!
  12:00am
