Listener comments!

  11:52am
jill:

i guess i am the first at my desk today!
  11:53am
Doug S.:

It's true, you beat everyone else to your desk!
  11:55am
Amanda:

I am at Jill's desk, but I made it here too late.
  11:56am
jill:

hey Drummer - have you gone to the park on 6th to see the occupy kids?
  11:58am
glenn:

occupy jill's desk!
  11:58am
Doug S.:

Swinging by there this evening (then going to see Gillian Welch).
  12:08pm
listener james from westwood:

good wednesday all! doug, i envy the gillian welch date; have a blast!
  12:09pm
Van in Dallas:

Somebody give that guy a call
  12:11pm
Skirkie:

B&H Must have been thrilled to get unload so many cassette tapes. (I assume they're the only ones who still have cassette tapes.)
  12:13pm
Doug S.:

Hi LJFW (and howdy Brother Van).

Good luck with the ALL CASSETTES journey, Amanda. I hope you have an experienced sherpa with you!
  12:14pm
Van in Dallas:

Hi Amanda, Doug, fellow listeners.
  12:15pm
Amanda:

Van -- you will hear more from him in a bit!

Hi lJfW and Skirkie and all!!! This is fun in a nerve-wracking, Sherpa-free way. And psssh, these came from drugstores far and wide many years ago. Not from B&H.
  12:24pm
listener james from westwood:

i think there's a cassette in my dresser of me, about age 4 or 5, talking about or to bert from sesame street. would've been just the ticket on the professor's audio kitchen.
  12:24pm
Skirkie:

I'm kinda in the mood to dig up my old "License to Ill" tape from my parents' house this weekend but I've nothing to play it on.
  12:27pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Amanda and all the listeners.
  12:27pm
Van in Dallas:

I'm thinking you're gonna be wishing you had done this show back when you were a 2-hr show ;)
  12:28pm
Doug S.:

I was thinking the SAME thing, Van! The third hour is going to be psycho-delic.
  12:30pm
Alf from Upstate:

Fun gal in the afternoon!
  12:38pm
listener james from westwood:

i hear ya, skirkie. got 2 players here but it's been a dog's age since i ran tape thru 'em. are cars still being produced with tape players as a standard feature? that might be going the way of the cigarette lighter as such (now I guess it's labeled an a/c socket or some such).
  12:38pm
Marsha:

God it's great to hear tape hiss again.
  12:40pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Amanda & friends. Just consider these previous ways of listening (tapes/records not sure 'bout 8 tracks) were not bad when new technology came about. They were superceded, there is still a place for them, try to keep a facility in the home.
  12:42pm
Brian in UK:

All that said Amanda. You is BOLD.
  12:44pm
Amanda:

Hi Marsha, Richard, and Alf! I agree, GREAT to hear tape hiss. As for the 3-hour problem, I am going to try to fill as much time as possible with anecdotes... which abound.

Skirkie --that Tiger Beat thing was taped over "Rhymin' and Stealin'"!
  12:48pm
listener james from westwood:

and i was always looking for the best tapes for my mixes, dubs, etc. as they were released. used to know by heart what to buy for which purpose (the really good ones for a girlfriend's mixtape, the shitty ones for class recordings, etc.) a world in partial eclipse, but still not entirely invisible.
  12:50pm
ndbob:

hello Amanda and everyone!
  12:52pm
Amanda:

Heyo ndbob!
  12:55pm
Doug S.:

It'd be brilliant to show some appreciation for our hard-working deejay! If you haven't yet, please leave a little something in the virtual tip jar. Make that pledge thermometer boil over!

Show your support for Amanda's show—and for Give the Drummer Radio—and you make a bold statement to everyone at WFMU (and the rest of the universe) that this year-old radio/stream hybrid experiment is worth all the blood, sweat and tears.
  12:57pm
Brian in UK:

Enjoy the gig tonight, Doug. Going to see Aaron Neville next month.
  12:58pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Great cassettes. Face to face song is pure energy.
  12:58pm
Brian in UK:

Whiskey in the Spinach?
  1:00pm
Carmichael:

Meetings, mettings .... Hi Amanda and peeps.
  1:03pm
Solution:

Listen to FMU with earphones in meetings. Hum along as the spirit moves you.
  1:06pm
Carmichael:

I have shoebox after shoebox of cassettes, many of them *found* music and comments. I'll have to dig through them soon just for fun.
  1:11pm
Amanda:

Fun fact: Of the Anda/Amanda recordings, this one was the least lewd.
  1:12pm
Aletrnate Track Title:

"Dear Diary" :-)
  1:14pm
Michele:

Love the Anda/Amanda recordings!
  1:14pm
ndbob:

this is great Amanda!
  1:14pm
glenn:

i just bought 150 open reel tapes for 25 $ (canadian). do i have an open reel deck? ummm, no.
  1:14pm
Ike:

Yeah, I have shoeboxes of cassettes too, most of them from the 90s, and I play them in my car (also from the 90s). Ah, this tape hiss makes me nostalgic.
  1:14pm
Carmichael:

Naughty NAUGHTY girlies.
  1:15pm
ndbob:

ah and now something from Mallet Magic
  1:16pm
Carmichael:

Speaking of naughty girlies, Harry Breuer had those LP covers featuring curvaceous and baudy women.
  1:18pm
Amanda:

I know, we were terrible! The rest of those songs include profane parody material about, for example, Danny Bonaduce and Eddie Vedder
  1:18pm
Amanda:

I wonder if any of you know any more info about this Hawaiian track? Seems to be up Doug's alley in particular.
  1:18pm
Danne D:

Yay :) I pledged to Amanda's show :)
  1:21pm
glenn:

judge to danny bonaduce " i sentence you to pick up trash by the side of the road"
danny bonaduce to judge " that's why i'm here in the first place"
  1:22pm
Danne D:

If you haven't already you should pledge to Amanda's show too - she's good people :)
  1:23pm
Amanda:

Aw, shucks. But he's right.
  1:24pm
Doug S.:

Hey, Bo Carter was playing on the stream right before you started the Scenario! Go Bo, go!
  1:27pm
Spirit of Benny Hill:

the magical fruit....
  1:29pm
Van in Dallas:

Okay, I forgot to ask for the show to be "paused" for me... disappeared to lunch for a while with a coworker :)
  1:31pm
Carmichael:

No, YOU'RE great.
  1:32pm
Mike VL:

cannot believe you played Thirsty! They made like 20 of those...
  1:35pm
Amanda:

Mike VL! I know, it is one of my most precious possessions. Do you know davE Punk Brown of Thirsty, by chance?
  1:35pm
Doug S.:

Just $100 more will get Amanda's total up to the 75% mark, which, at the end of this third of her four October shows, is where SHE NEEDS to be. Please shock us with your awesomeness and make a pledge.
  1:40pm
ndbob:

just pledged:)
  1:42pm
pgw in mntclr:

a little Blossom Dearie is always nice on a rainy dreary day
  1:42pm
Mike VL:

I do indeed!...went to Ithaca College. I have a bunch of his old zines (Howlinwun and Muddle). Used to go to a bunch of basement/local shows here in the mid 90s with him and lived one town over from me. I need to share the box o' memories from that time period with you soon!
  1:44pm
Amanda:

Yes! Yes, yes, please do Mike! Small world, innit.

Hi pgw! I agree very much. We may hear some Chet Baker in a little while but no promises.

THANK YOU ndbob!!!
  1:47pm
pgw in mntclr:

ah, Chet's good too
  1:47pm
glenn:

could we hear laverne baker instead?
  1:48pm
listener james from westwood:

90 min of meetings so far today! i thought freelancing was supposed to spare me this madness!
  1:49pm
Amanda:

glenn -- No, because I don't have her on any tapes. :-P

I'm sorry, James!
  1:50pm
Brian in UK:

I'm a GNU. How do you do?
  1:51pm
Amanda:

Aganother gnu!
  1:52pm
Gloria Smud:

They're singing my song, dahlings.
  1:52pm
The System:

@james from westwood: No, freelancing ("1099 status") is just our way of shifting the employer's half of FICA tax, plus all tax withholding paperwork, back onto you. You're welcome, and have a good day!
  1:53pm
Alf from Upstate:

Amanda was only going to do a vaganza, but then decided to do an extra vaganza. Thanks Amanda!
  1:53pm
Mike VL:

Amanda I just had to dig it up...damn nostalgia! http://tinyurl.com/63wuygn
  1:56pm
Skirkie:

Ick, did you wash the tapes?
  2:01pm
Brian in UK:

I used to have a 425cc Suzuki. Any good.
  2:02pm
ndbob:

i need to go.. excellent and different show Amanda - I'll catch the rest on the archive.
  2:08pm
Amanda:

Bye ndbob, and thanks again!!!

Skirkie -- of course not silly! I did wipe off the cases though
  2:12pm
Carmichael:

Reminds me of the old SNL sketch, where Steve Martin was selling Spanish lessons door to door.
  2:14pm
Amanda:

Mike VL -- YES! That's the same one I have. Wow...
  2:15pm
listener james from westwood:

@System: It's worth it for the ability to work with FMU blaring in the background! Oh, and for the mid-work beer.
  2:19pm
The System:

@james: Just keep that quarterly withholding coming in to D.C. on time. Attaboy! :-)
  2:22pm
Ike:

1099 status. Ugh. What a giant scam allowing employers to get away with murder. Shouldn't be allowed.
  2:22pm
Van in Dallas:

I was "working from home" just yesterday afternoon at my favorite place enjoying adult beverages while doing so.
  2:23pm
pgw in mntclr:

Blossom, Chet, and a shout-out! Everything's coming up Milhouse!
  2:23pm
The System:

1099, created by Your Friends in Washington! We love you all!
  2:24pm
Amanda:

Gasp! Van! I'm sure Listener James would never do such a thing...

pgw, much obliged... you deserve it.
  2:24pm
Van in Dallas:

yeah will I miss all those years in Germany when I always wrote "EXEMPT" on my tax return :)
  2:24pm
Ike:

I blame businesses and their lobbyists telling Washington what to do. OK, that's it for me. No more rising to the bait.
  2:25pm
glenn:

working from home really means pounding the pooch
  2:25pm
Freelancer:

If you work from home and have pointless meetings ( <-- redundancy alert), then just put your phone on mute (*6 or similar) and do whatever you want -- music, scarastic remarks, chores, all of the above, etc.
  2:27pm
Van in Dallas:

@Freelancer lol, I did that so much in a past job that I worked remotely for. *6 was my best friend ha ha.
  2:29pm
D.C. Geniuses:

Businesses have to go by the rules that we create and enforce under threat of often huge punishments. Those darn businesses always game the system. And every time we add another new 3000-page law to the system, that just creates more ways to game it. What the fuck are we doing wrong?
  2:29pm
Danne D:

Amanda! I am shocked that you'd think your listeners theives ;o)
  2:32pm
Danne D:

(subtheme of the show - an abbreviated history of Amanda's boyfriends)
:)
  2:33pm
glenn:

why is this reminding me of high fidelity?
  2:33pm
Reading the playlist page:

@danne: "An autobiographical exercise"
  2:36pm
Danne D:

yup :)

Btw, Amanda you are a great storyteller :)
  2:36pm
Van in Dallas:

I remember making SO many compilation tapes from my LPs in both Dolby NR and DBX, and trying to write neatly all the artists/song titles. My handwriting was just as bad back then :)
  2:37pm
glenn:

the cassettes i used to buy at the fifth wheel truck stop smelled like old smokes and stale molson export.
  2:38pm
Danne D:

You and Fiveash sounds like a fun show :)
  2:38pm
Danne D:

For those who don't know from Fiveash he is a legendary member of the Hoof N Mouth Sinfonia
  2:39pm
pgw in mntclr:

the cassette liner notes always had a great smell
  2:41pm
Van in Dallas:

This show does bring to mind one of my favorite albums Back In The Day, yes, one I actually recorded from LP to tape as well :) Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape by Bauhaus. Timely because Bela Lagosi's Dead is such a great Halloween song :)
  2:43pm
Danne D:

Booooooooooo Knix are thugs!
  2:44pm
Amanda:

MY listeners are not thieves, but there are so many marauders on the internet, my stars...

Fiveash has jury duty today so he can't pipe up to promote himself. Next week that will all change.
  2:47pm
Doug S.:

Amanda needs to raise only $67.50 to reach 75%. C'mon people!!

Don't forget all the cool crapola you get for your pledge. Fifty clams gets you an all-new FMU t-shirt. A hundred clams nabs you WFMU's snazzy Sun Ra Remix CD, featuring Sun Ra trax redone and worked over by WFMU DJs. A stone-cold collector's item!
  2:47pm
glenn:

i'm surprised you haven't played cassette pet from bow wow wow.
  2:47pm
Danne D:

lol s'ok Amanda :) I know you meant that the thieves were those marauder types ;)

Peoples - heed Doug's call - he knows things :)
  2:50pm
mchuge:

Just needs a Jah Wobble throbbing bass line :)
  2:50pm
Amanda:

I want money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2:50pm
pgw in mntclr:

i walked past G Love in Philly once. He's tall.
  2:51pm
Amanda:

Hi mchuge!
  2:58pm
Van in Dallas:

  2:58pm
Danne D:
