Favoriting December 7, 2011: Annual show dedicated to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

[photo: Jim McIntyre with his Mom at WBCN]
Five years ago I did my first WFMU show as part of the regular weekly schedule. I dedicated that show to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, who was also known as Jimmy Mack. Jim's passion for music - and radio, for that matter - was overpowering. He started working at Boston's WBCN, one of the top rock stations in the country, while still in high school and eventually became a key part of their Music department. He was as generous with his opinions on new bands he loved (Cheap Trick! The Dictators! The Motors! Ultravox! The Stranglers!) as he was with extra promo records that BCN had received, and I was a grateful and fortunate recipient of both.

By the age of 20, Jimmy was the Music Director at WBCN. Six years later, he was gone - the first AIDS victim who'd gone to my high school (but sadly not the last). But his influence during those formative high school years has stayed with me to this day, and the bands he introduced me to remain among my all-time favorites.

As I wrote five years ago, and have reiterated at the start of the fall/winter schedule ever since, there have been countless times that I've wished Jim was still here so I could tell him about a great new record I'd heard, or he could tell me about his new favorites. I'm thankful that I can go on the radio every week and share my favorites with you - and if you like what you hear, take a moment to say "thanks" to Jimmy Mack for shaping my musical taste for a lifetime.

Hey Funk Fans. Congrats on your 5th anniversary, Evan.

Thank you for your great show and by extension thanks to Jimmy Mack for influencing and pointing you in so many excellent musical directions.

What a fitting tribute to your good friend.
  9:16pm
Danne D:

Wow, so you've gone from the nebulous "pretty much always do" to a straight up "Every show starts with a cut from the 70s".

Good catch, G - not sure how long it would've taken me to notice that.
  9:17pm
will:

Stray into dB's segue was super! It was even in the same key!
  9:17pm
cheri:

cheers to you evan on your 5th annniversary..evan
  9:18pm
G:

EFD sounds more sure about what he wants the show to be, with the passage of time. Hedging language is gone (pretty much always, or none of these, etc.)
  9:19pm

Random note to Message Board overlord's - the 7pm show (weev) never had the live comments closed out just as a heads up.

This Department S song is fantastic btw.
  9:21pm

  9:30pm
Danne D:

@Destroit keep your eyes peeled come March when the Evan Funk Davies Happy How Do You Do To You Fantasy Baseball League (hopefully) starts up again in case we are in need of new members :)

So good. Best sabers v. Flyers soundtrack ever.
  10:22pm
Danne D:

Awesome EFD.

Go Sabres (or more specifically go non-Flyers!)
  10:27pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & everyone! This morning I turned the ac on my car because it was 70F & muggy as heck - driving home just now I had to turn on the heat/defrost as it's 46F & dropping swiftly to an anticipated 31F. Weird.
Mr.Chop is most excellent. And are we going to hear any Pearl Harbo[u]r?
  10:27pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Just got in from the pouring rain and am glad to be home, listening to the radio. So happy you're on the fall sched, EFD. And a big THANK YOU and rest in peace to your dear, departed friend, Jimmy Mack. Another reminder that AIDS sucks and we all need to stay safe, get tested, know our status, and show kindness to those who are afflicted.
  10:29pm
Destroit:

Ha, ok, I've got a weird specific love for the sabers(wings fan full & true) ; what is the origin of your hatred at the flyers?
  10:33pm
Destroit:

@Wendy: yes yes yes :)
  10:37pm
efd:

Hi Holly! Similar temperature changes taking place up here, and it's raining like the dickens. I actually had to think about your Pearl Harbo[u]r question for a second! I don't think I'm going to go there. :)

@Wendy, well said. And glad you're home safe with the radio on.

  10:58pm
T-Zero:

efd, the new color scheme is nice, but could you darken the comment and playlist text so it's easier to read? sorry to complain...
  11:00pm
G:

This is the guy who produced the first Floyd albums etc etc. Engineered all the early Beatles stuff. Big Brit record producer. "Hurricane" was John Lennon's nickname for him, from his working pace.
  11:01pm
Holly in NC:

@G - did not know that, thank you!
  11:01pm
Rickwaukee:

I seem to recall seeing him do Babe on the American Bandstand
  11:01pm
G:

  11:02pm
efd:

darn it, G! Spoiler alert! (I was about to mention that during my mic break)

@T-Zero, not sure how much I can futz with the colors while doing the show (not to mention ticket giveaway) but I'll at least make some tweaks tomorrow if I can't get to it now. Thanks for the feedback.
  11:02pm
Holly in NC:

I am not changing my screen name to Holham.
  11:03pm
G:

sorry! know-it-all syndrome :-( but radio listeners don't know :-)
  11:04pm
T-Zero:

efd: Yeah, I was thinking maybe tweaking when you're off air, not while you're busy. Thanks for considering git.
  11:06pm
Holly in NC:

@G - be wary of underestimating *these* radio listeners! :-)
  11:06pm
creamaweet:

Thanks for considering grits.
  11:08pm
G:

i meant radio listeners (as opposed to streamers) didn't see my spoiler comment before the mic break ! :-)

watch out, you, or i'll bring the honking palmetto bug back
  11:15pm
Holly in NC:

Honkin' palmetto bugs now strike me as cute 'n' fuzzy compared to:

Never imagined Neil Hagerty's muse would take him this direction. I feel so old!
  11:22pm
efd:

  11:30pm
Joe B:

I actually saw Hurricane Smith perform at the Beatles convention a few years ago, it was unbelievable!
  11:30pm
G:

a NMR just is wrinkly and pink and has no hair. naked like that. with bigass ugly teeth. SFW, i'd say, just butt fugly.
  11:31pm
Danne D:

Hiya Holly :)
And welcome to Jimmy :) Wonder if he has any great EFD stories to share :D
  11:32pm
G:

@Joe B: Wikipedia Norman Smith article says, about that convention:

"Smith wrote a memoir, entitled John Lennon Called Me Normal. It debuted on 16 March 2007 as a limited edition at The Fest for Beatles Fans in Secaucus, New Jersey. There, Smith appeared and sang "Oh Babe". The book contains never before published pictures, newly revealed historical facts about the Beatles and Pink Floyd at Abbey Road Studios, as well as details of Smith's life as an RAF glider pilot."

Jimmy:

@Danne: I receive a regular stipend to keep quiet...
  11:32pm
Joe B:

  11:32pm

@Danne - Hi!!!
@Danne & G - what is SFW?
  11:32pm
G:

he died the year after that convention, at age 85
  11:34pm
G:

safe for work as in not obscene or similar

  11:34pm
Julie:

Evan it's monsoony out there! Strap yourself down
  11:35pm
efd:

@Julie, I can see it! Now, what's the deal with this Olivia Newton-John concert?!
  11:36pm
Julie:

@EFD I went to one, wanna make something of it?
  11:36pm
Holly in NC:

Ah, I know NSFW well. Note my unfamiliarity with SFW .
I was coming up with all sorts of NSFW explanations for SFW! ;-)
  11:37pm
Julie:

I kinda like Nick Gilder..But then I like Olivia Newton-John, what do I know?
  11:38pm
Danne D:

YES! HARRY!
  11:38pm
efd:

I just want to know where it was! I've got no beef with ONJ - in fact I just found out that my brother played with her once, but he hasn't spilled any further details. Does she make people take a vow of silence?
  11:38pm
Julie:

It's a hurricane! You and Mary will have to broadcast for the next three days! (That would be so awesome)
  11:38pm
G:

true, SFW could be "so f---ing wierd" etc. WTF, too many ambiguous acronyms in textspeak and chatspeak!
  11:38pm
Danne D:

Julie :) Hiya
  11:39pm
Julie:

Hiya Danne! I was out on my balcony..Felt like I was gonna get blown into the river
  11:39pm
Danne D:

Um, EFD, is that playing with ONJ story SFW?
  11:40pm
Danne D:

Yeah - I'm on comments from home tonight. No coffee shop trip in this slop.
  11:41pm
Danne D:

@Jimmy so have you noticed the 5 years worth of archives of Evan's show? :)
  11:42pm
Jimmy:

@Danne: I have lots to catch up on...
  11:42pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Julie!

Olivia's "Love Song" is brilliant. Anyone who likes the Poppy Family and doesn't like that song is just being...anti-Olivia
  11:44pm
Danne D:

It's all worth it, Jimmy, it's all worth it.
  11:45pm
Julie:

Yes it's a great one! I think Lesley Duncan wrote that and OMG I had no idea she died last year!
  11:45pm
Harry McLeran:

A very nice tribute to your friend, Evan. LOVE your show and your great music, particularly the recent Bohannon throwdown. You always nail the right tune at the right time. RIP Jimmy ... rock on EFD!
  11:46pm
Holly in NC:

In truth, my 1st thought for SFW = single fat wanker. In my defense
a) I don't text
b) I haven't had dinner (or lunch)
  11:47pm
Rickwaukee:

Give me a C, a bouncy C
  11:47pm
G:

Someone order food for Holly as a clear work of corporal mercy.
  11:48pm
Stevel:

No! Hold back the food. Holly appears to be on a vision quest. Wanker for the win!
  11:49pm
Danne D:

I count 313 archived playlists for EFD (including tonight) so that's over 900 hours of catching up Jimmy ;)

Wow, and sometime probably this summer, EFD will break 1000 hours on air on WFMU :D
  11:49pm
G:

Is the ONJ talk caused by her current NYC shows, culminating in Westbury tomorrow? I heard her interviewed about that this past Saturday night.
  11:50pm
Julie:

Wow I just read your page, EFD. So sad: (
  11:50pm
Danne D:

Hmmm, I put a post with SFW and Holly thinks Single Fat Wanker

:(
  11:51pm
G:

ha ha danne, we all have our crosses to bear. you can always go to the strand :-P
  11:51pm
efd:

@Harry, thanks very much - greatly appreciated.
  11:51pm
Danne D:

Wonder if EFD will do a special 1000versary show :)
  11:52pm
Danne D:

G, thanks G
