A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

In that case, might I suggest "Love Goes to Buildings on Fire" by Will Hermes. Makes me wish I was around NYC in the mid-70's. I'm learning a ton as well.

Pardon if this has already been discussed.

Which reminds me, have you ever tried to explain to a non-native English speaker what it means for two people to "get along like a house on fire?"

fab! and a great interview with that author on kurt gottschalk's show a few months ago...
  10:36am
Andrew:

@Adrian - I ran out of mince pies at least a week ago. I still do have the bottle of booze I bought to tide me over, but that will probably last till the summer!
  10:38am
Brian in UK:

Just missed the real Nirvana. Got the original album. Cedric the Centaur et al. Followed by that great Brian Eno cover. Good work trouble.

Adrian in London:

@Andrew: we have half a dozen left, plus the baklava we bought before Christmas then forgot about until two days ago.

@trouble: Did you know Julie Delpy is directing a biopic about Joe Strummer? I liked her second film, 2 Days in Paris. Not a big Clash fan but I like her work.

brain auger is a great name for a metal band.
  10:55am
John de San Antonio:

I have some sad news from Austin, TX to share. Esme Barrera, a 29 year old special ed. elementary school teacher, and camp counselor for the Girls Rock Camp Austin was found murdered after returning home from a New Year's Eve Party. Esme was a bad ass beautiful punk rock heroine who influenced many young girls to pick up a musical instrument and rock out. She also use to work the counter at Waterloo Records for a spell.
  10:56am
John de San Antonio:

You can donate in her honor to the Girls Rock Camp Austin here http://www.girlsrockcampaustin.org/ and read the tragic story here http://austinist.com/2012/01/02/in_memorium_-_esme_barrera.php
  10:57am
Midori JC:

Hi, Trouble! What a pleasure to listen to your show as I start my first work day this year. Your selection is awesome! Very uplifting and heartwarming!

sugargliders, yay! Probably too late for today, but Field Mice if not today sometime soon please?
  11:06am
Brian in UK:

Was that Eric Matthews on trumpet on The Sugargliders?

Hello Robert, freeform with a global heart.
  11:07am

Agreed about Zisou. Haughty film people hate it though, for some reason.
  11:08am

Robert Swipe:

Sorry - and hello Jay too! I normally get itchy feet after 5 mins but have been on here for an hour and have no intention of shifting any time soon...
  11:10am
dc pat:

huh, I didn't give FB any birthday. Is that a requirement now? ....or did I give a fake birthday too? Lemme check...
  11:11am
Socialite:

SpaceBook, MyFace ... all the same
  11:11am
Mark@Work:

The birthday is for targeted marketing!
  11:11am
Brian in UK:

They want to know ALL about you.
  11:11am
dc pat:

oh. I did give birfday but I it set to "Don't show my birthday.."
  11:11am
Jennique:

Maybe Spacebook/MyFace wants a birth date for the under 18 set? So parents can monitor them? Dunno.
  11:12am
Mark Zuckerberg:

To sell you age-related products.
  11:12am
glenn:

please. EVERYTHING about facebook is about targeted marketing.
  11:12am
matt:

FB fishes for endless amounts of personal info. You can set your birthday (fake or not) so no one sees it.
  11:13am
glenn:

otherwise it would cost you money to be a member.
  11:14am
popo:

obviously the most basic info, plus a good way to pimp you out
  11:14am
Mark@Work:

Mike watt said it best "Let the products sell themselves"
  11:14am
Jennique:

I use Adblock Plus on my browser and it eliminates all ads on the margins. It's great. The targeted ads were getting to me.
  11:16am
Robert Swipe:

Re birthdays; Nowadays I don't think people are prepared to accept anything unless it's been corroborated by Twitter or Facebook. Indeed, I ceased to exist entirely for several months a while back when we lost our Internet connection. (I'm better now, obviously)...
  11:16am
still b/p:

MK said she's too reclusive for it. I'm too averse to the intensive personal info vacuuming/analyzing/exploiting for profit, and to the all-posted-material-is-owned-by-Facebook rule, and to the unlimited growth mindset of the operation, but mainly I don't see how I need it for anything.
  11:17am
annie:

or you can do what kurt did, he changed his location every ten minutes, too. and i see you have it set to new year's .. matt is right you can set it to be unpublished or change it every week to another date. and yes adblock plus rules! and there's an app you can apply to get rid of the ticker.
  11:17am
βrian:

Sounds as if you were turned into a newt. Ugh.
  11:17am
matt:

SocialFixer.com is good for disabling some of FB's worst features, or at least hiding them from view.
  11:17am
Brian in UK:

Robert an FMU operative will be round shortly to access your viability to groove & be cool.
  11:18am
dale:

what i hate most about facebook is the fact that they own and can sell any photos that you post to it. don't bel alarmed if your visage shows up in a laxative ad or drug store circular
  11:21am
Brian in UK:

trouble, Francoise Hardy covered a Nirvana song 'Tiny Goddess' in the lates Sixties.
  11:21am
Van in Dallas:

I guess I don't know what I'm missing regarding FaceBook. Won't do it.
  11:24am
trouble:

good morning midori! and duhhhh now i feel foolish that of course the marketing thing is the spacebook reason, BUT now i know lots of trix to override! thankx!
  11:25am
Listener Kenzo:

Yes, of course I agree that it's part of Spacebook mktg. but it's nice to get a Happy Birthday from Mark Z. every year...he takes time to personally personalize all the messages! So many people known and unknown have so much info on me that I don't really care anymore. By the way, is that a French bird identification recording you have as your bed? Any info on that for this birder? Thank you very kindly and HNY.
  11:26am

yes brian in uk! that is how we sort of got on to that band, merci for looking out for me and my francoise love!

Never too old, brother.
  11:35am
Robert Swipe:

I'll believe it when I see it Brian! This Kiran Alhuwalia track is lovely, btw
  11:35am

Are you referring to Lord Buckley Bean? He really is the coolest.
  11:36am
glenn:

"it tastes awful, but it works". buckley's cough syrup.
  11:37am

The bird man is worth it just for the crackle of the vinyl. This digital mullarkey - it'll never catch on...

Hang on, *I'm* unneighbourly? How can I get rid of Satan? Is there a cream or something?

Facebook is Satan, indeed. Ooh lovely, the Louvins. Saw Nick Lowe and Ron Sexsmith doing their Louvin tribute at the Royal Albert Hall a while back. Was, you know, one of those moments. That last Bird man tune was one of his best...
