A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

no no, "lapins" is not an weird innuendo, it's just it sounds very nice, like a mother could speak of her children, somethin' like that. I didn't mind at all. "Petit Champignons" is completely original, and works for me as well ^^

Hello trouble and friends. Just dropped a small one in the bin.
We went to Paris for a day trip last Wednesday. Beautiful day, L'Orangerie & Nouvelle d'Orsay.
Give Duane a megaphone.
  9:32am
pierre:

@Urban Dictionnary : It is true that "Lapins" have this reputation, don't they as well in the u.s. ?
But when somebody says "mon petit lapin" it would be more to a kid, or a pupil, without innuendo implied.
  9:35am

can't i just pick up your premium at sam goody?

ha, Brian.
I was watching a quite unfunny detective show t(that thought itself quite clever) the other day, Psych, but one thing that did amuse me was that their contract rider insisted on a trampoline and a NBA official air horn
  9:43am
Cecile:

the megaphone reminded me of that.

Cecile:

good morning, all!

Nice one Cecile. Here's a sad story about the lead in Wuthering Height. Still not seen it yet. Looking forward to Rampage, same crew as The Messenger which I thought was very good. Too good for Oscars!!

I only saw Rango and Bridesmaids this year.
I wanted to see Beginners. I even watched Top Gear reruns instead of the ceremony. I'm so very over the Oscars.

Rango wasn't even the best animated feature. I thought Kung Fu Panda 2 was stunningly gorgeous and at times pee your pants funny. Rango looked good, but was very weird - a cartoon version of Chinatown!

how old is this Donovan Quinn? This sounds like a lost 80s record.

there's more story there, but it's just going to be more sadness, Brian. But thanks for sharing.

  10:15am
Rob W:

Thanks very much Trouble for the shout out earlier. But I have to tell everyone - in a certain way the person ultimately responsible for starting the chain of events that led to Trouble's triumphant tenure on the FMU airwaves is none other than comment board superstar and devoted listener and pledger Cecile! I will explain in a second.
  10:15am
Cecile:

You pledge to NPR for $365, you get an in print CD and a tote bag.
  10:16am
Cecile:

really, Rob?
  10:20am
Thom Ristow:

Good luck with your goal today Duane and Trouble
  10:21am
Rob W:

Here's why Cecile leads to Trouble: My longtime sidekick Katie attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor some long years ago, as had a few years before. She met Cecile. Cecile invited Katie to come check out U of M's great freeform radio station, WCBN, where she was doing a show. Katie started doing a show on CBN too (eventually becoming music director). I had done a show on CBN a few years earlier but Katie and I did not overlap and did not meet in Michigan. But we did meet through the WCBN-expat network in New York. Katie and I hooked up. Katie met Trouble and they became friends, and so through Katie I met and became friends with Trouble. And then we all met Ken and Ken encouraged Trouble to try out for a slot on FMU. So you can trace Trouble's presence on our WFMU airwaves back to Cecile!
  10:23am
Rob W:

I meant to say - "as I had (attended U of M) a few years before (Katie)" - sorry for the typo - !
  10:24am
Cecile:

Nice!
Rob fails to metion that he was a super-great mentor to me and very encouraging and enthusiastic. Our time overlapped for about a year.
  10:26am
Cecile:

When he left, he even wrote an ex-pat column for our station newsletter. I remember him writing that the Lyres were like "the Anti-Nowhere League of garage"!
  10:26am
Robert:

I think what this illustrates is that the people who do this sort of thing are a special rare subspecies, of whom at any given time about a third of them are in captivity at WFMU.
  10:28am
Cecile:

He started a media show called Words and Music. I guested as the fanzine reviewer. Then I kind of co=opted the newsletter. ;)
  10:29am
Rob W:

Aw gee thanks Cecile! Although I don't remember the Lyres quote - I'll gladly take credit though!
  10:32am
Cecile:

Seriously, though, you were one of the few folks in station management who tried to get to know everyone and encourage their craziness.
  10:32am
Rob W:

@ Robert - well, I was thinking - you know how there's the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon for movie buffs... I think we should document the Six Degrees of Cecile for the freeform radio freakocracy!
  10:33am
Cecile:

Oh, gee whiz. I'm literally blushing here.
  10:35am
Adrian in London:

Hi all; I pledged last week, I can listen with impunity this week.
  10:35am
Cecile:

hey, you guys, since I have a prize account, I'm ticking off no swag on my pledge. Is this keeping me out of the running for swag. :D

I was so lucky last year, I shouldn't even be complaining.
  10:37am
Van in DC:

@Cecile - I've been doing the same thing on my account.
  10:37am
Rob W:

Well, and seriously too: The WCBN experience was very inspirational for me - it was the first time I really found something I unequivocally loved doing - and I'm still so passionate about freeform radio today, as we all are at FMU. Which is why folks should definitely pledge and support this crazy wonderful radio station / cultural institution. (And I do mean institution, in all senses of the word!)
  10:38am
Cecile:

It kind of ruined me for the communications industry. LOL!
  10:39am
Rob W:

PS - sorry I made you blush Cecile! As for the technical stuff - I think no swag just refers to premiums, the things you get automatically (like sticker or soap for 15 bucks, t-shirt in addition for 50, premium cd in addition to shirt and soap / sticker for 75 etc) - you're still in the running for prize drawings.
  10:40am
Cecile:

nice.

That's fine, Rob. It's the kind of embarrassment I don't really mind.

TELL IT DUANE.
  10:42am
Rob W:

Cecile - I can relate to your joke about the communications biz - the freeform mentality has definitely led to some problems in my day jobs in more mainstream non-commercial broadcasting! I have to be very careful not to tip my hand! Must get to work now and leave the board to others but please dear listeners - pledge if you haven't, pledge more if you have, and show your love for Trouble's amazing show and this great radio station.
  10:42am
Cecile:

but don't leave FMU stickers when you get bad service like the tracts some religious people leave as a message to bad waitresses.
  10:43am
deb:

i made a mouse of today pledge last year -- do it, everyone! -- and was wondering if i need to make a new pledge to renew (and-or sweep up another set of awesome premums)?
  10:44am
Barney:

Pledged last week and getting your premium cd to fight the creeping threat of princess music.
  10:46am
Cecile:

YES, the hip-hop!
  10:48am
Cecile:

Do you have auto-renew, deb? If you don't, you have to re-pledge. If you do, you probably should have set up a prize account before the fundraiser. I defer to Joe McG as to the accuracy of my answer.
  10:49am

Hi Trouble and all the Troubled listeners who make this possible ! Big kiss from the cool world ( 5 inches of snow today!) from your Moomin landia PS can't wait to hear this in my headphones when the CD arrives !!!!!

That was a great story :)
  10:59am
Adrian in London:

Great Vannier story, Duane. I cherish my Finders Keepers vinyl set.
  11:02am
Van in DC:

I love Kitaro. A street musician was playing one of his songs outside a DC metro station once, and I stopped, listened, smiled. When he finished I walked up, gave him a $10 and said, "I love Kitaro!". His eyes lit up and he looked at me with amazement that I knew what the tune was.

Not that Kitaro is ever played on FMU. But still.
  11:03am
Adrian in London:

My ears are burning!

yayson:

does this sounds a little like sting? just asking.
