Listener comments!

  9:03pm
Hey:

33 was kinda interesting, moving in the Barry White direction there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
efd:

yeah, I'll let someone else move in that direction. ;)
  9:05pm
Hey:

Good thought :-) Soundin' nice so far
  9:06pm
Parq:

OH = FL?
  9:06pm
Kat in Chicago:

actually the slowed down Smith was a pretty good transition from that last bit of Rupture's show
  9:08pm
SteveL:

Ready to go, as soon as I help empty the dogs. Good evening all.
  9:09pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

A few minutes late and I missed the magnificent Smith already? Gayle McCormick was sadly overlooked and underrated.
  9:10pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

And was Born in Boston one of the tracks produced by Del Shannon?
  9:10pm
miss cheri:

hey what's up's evan!! i know that you're a huge nick gilder fan,, but i'm also a hot child/woman in the city as well!!!
  9:10pm
G:

I notice Rupture is now just saying "Evan," rather cleverly avoiding the order issue when it come to the Funk and the Davies...
  9:12pm
Kat in Chicago:

G: nope, he still screwed it up tonight :)
  9:13pm
G:

my bad, i missed his miss :-)
  9:15pm
john:

Hurrah! Hurray!
  9:15pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

@Kat+ G missed a few minutes and possibly my fave part of Wed-the screwed up toss!
  9:16pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

these guys sound like the Dancing Hoods with a less straight ahead drummer
  9:17pm
john:

Hurrah! was one of my mid-80s absolute faves. Wore my tape to dust.
  9:23pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & all! I'm not able to listen yet, just popping in to see what I'm missing :-(
@Michael from the Left Coast - I cannot believe you referenced the Dancing Hoods! The ep is overall better, I guess, but I played the crap out of "Surfing All Over the World" back in the day. Wow. And who could foresee Sparklehorse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
efd:

hi everyone! john, somehow missed Hurrah! altogether at the time - not sure how. MichaelftLC - that Smith track wasn't a Del Shannon production.
  9:25pm
G:

Nonlisteners commenting??? What is this world COMING TO???? :-P
  9:26pm
miss cheri:

evan,,, i'm loving your show,, and i love the funk!
  9:26pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Dancing Hoods were great and I thought Eric was a true talent--I knew them in those days and absolutely could not see Mark's emergence in Sparklehorse (although he was Freddy when I knew him)
  9:29pm
john:

Guess both bands happened about the same time. I liked Dancing Hoods, but LOVED Hurrah!.
  9:30pm
God:

The Tebow deal may not happen, actually…
  9:30pm
john:

Evan, have you heard the whole CD yet? If not, go directly to Gloria.
  9:31pm
Chiklet:

Smith? Wow. What's next? The Original Caste? Coven?
  9:33pm
miss cheri:

if you don't mind me saying evan that i always enjoy being here,,
  9:34pm
john:

Funny thing is, a friend was just posting Smith and Gayle McCormick stuff on his Facebook page a couple weeks ago.
  9:34pm
Chiklet:

Tim Tebow's trade to the New York Jets for two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft is back on again, according to multiple reports.
The deal is as it was originally constructed with the Jets acquiring Tebow and a seventh-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft from the Broncos and in exchange the Broncos receive a fourth and sixth-round pick from the Jets.
  9:35pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Actually, the most notable thing about Smith was that they hit the top 20 with their cover of "Baby It's You"
  9:35pm
Gourmand:

WHAT THE HECK IS A SALAD SANDWICH
  9:36pm
Florence:

They also teamed up with a major cooking oil firm for the ill-fated SMith & Wesson campaign.
  9:37pm
john:

Took off like a shot, but then backfired?
  9:37pm
Florence:

Exactly.
  9:38pm
Gourmand:

Is that Florence Herderson for Wesson???
  9:38pm
Holly in NC:

Baby It's You - so DANG late 60s - perfectly on cusp between hippie and polyester : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6atUODsWGs
  9:39pm
Florence:

Yesm Gourmand. With Maureen McCormick of Smith!
  9:40pm
Gourmand:

Well, shuck my salad sandwich!
  9:42pm
Florence:

White Witch. White Denim, Barry White, Whitesnake ...
  9:42pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

This song reminds me of the devastating "Angel of Death"scene in Dolomite.
  9:42pm
PB:

@holly, the same Baby It's You that the Beatles covered? Wasn't that originally released in the early 60s?
  9:43pm
miss cheri:

evan because of you i LOVE abba now and my two favorite abba tunes are "RING RING" & "NINA THE PRETTY BALERINA" so evan what are your favorite abba tunes??
  9:43pm
Phann:

Do-Lo-Mite! I love Jimmy Walker.
  9:44pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Sorry, "Dolomite. "
  9:44pm
SteveL:

Don't forget White Mystery. See 'em if you get the chance. Mesmerizing, in a rocking-out sort of way.
  9:46pm
Folsom Prism:

ooh color-coded bands white red black sabbath, orange juice, green jello ...
  9:46pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Loathsome autocorrect.
  9:47pm
john:

Dolemite. Dolomite would be the Italian dub.
  9:50pm
Holly in NC:

@PB -yes, the original is the MIGHTY Shirelles who I ADORE . Link is to Smith cover in 1969
  9:50pm
the glowing one:

I dig the font and the colors, Evan. And the music, too.
  9:50pm
Kat in Chicago:

cosigning with SteveL on White Mystery - great live band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm

thanks, glowing one! The music is the most important, of course. :)

Hi Holly, Kat, Folsom, Barkevious, Steve, PB, cheri, Chiklet, Parq, and everyone else! Special hello to all you lurkers! Thanks for tuning in tonight.
  9:53pm
SteveL:

Kat:re. WM: Sweet folks too. I will see them when they return.
  9:53pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Man Rockin' Horse sounds a bit like Procol Harum without the Hammond
  9:54pm
Lurkers:

DUCK!!!(I think he can see us.)
  9:54pm
12539:

(Special hello to you too, Evan.)
  9:56pm
miss cheri:

efd--you enjoy ALL abba tunes?? you can't pick just one??
  10:00pm

no flogging the dj. this is not a bdsm show!!!
  10:02pm
Leather Lover:

@Ref: You happen to know where I can find a show like that??
  10:03pm
john:

Wow, if it turns out someone stole a box full of Go-Betweens outtakes, Wild Nothing may be law enforcement's first call...
  10:04pm
Referee:

pseu's comments board??? O:-)
  10:05pm
Leather Lover:

I prefer whips to hooks, but I'll give it a go.
  10:06pm

I see synthpop is still strong in the 2010s.
  10:07pm

  10:08pm
Donovan:

My fave eurythmics song!
  10:08pm
the glowing one:

no, I think that blouse track was good. and that early eurorhytmics track sounds as if it's brand new... weird.
  10:09pm
Donovan:

Dum Dum girls should cover this
  10:11pm
miss cheri:

you could tell me efd,,,what are your abba songs?
  10:11pm
the glowing one:

how did I just spell eurythmics?!?
  10:11pm
john:

Couple thousand bands are covering it right now, and they've never even heard the song.
  10:11pm
miss cheri:

*favorite*
  10:14pm
john:

The Flock Of Seagulls revival starts here, and long overdue, he said without a touch of irony. No, really.
  10:15pm
Randy in NC:

@john, so that's why I like these guys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
efd:

I was thinking more Get Ready-era New Order, but close enough!
  10:16pm
john:

It's certainly why I do.
  10:18pm
Donovan:

All I'm saying is that they've already done a bunch of covers (big star, the smiths, rolling stones) and that eurythmics song would be perfect for their sound.
  10:21pm
Randy in NC:

Speaking of covers, that cover of Here Come the Warm Jets by Circle that I've been hearing around these parts is pretty sweet.
  10:21pm
the glowing one:

10-20 years ago you could definitely tell if a band was "retro" or reviving an old genre. today you can still tell most of the time if you listen closely for clues, but they get better and better blending in. I would even dare say, perfectioning some genres.
  10:22pm
PB:

@Randy, I agree. Dan Bodah played it this past Monday night. It was amazing.
  10:23pm
miss cheri:

well if i'm going to be ignored might as well split and say good night evan and all!!!! but keep da funk alive!!
  10:24pm
PB:

What I found even more amazing is that Circle is Finnish.
  10:26pm
SteveL:

Lovign this cover a whole lot.

Had a friend who threatened to use the original at his catholic wedding. Love the idea of one of the nuns reading slowly over the lyrics.
  10:26pm
Randy in NC:

@PB, yeah that and a Wooden Shjips that was good too.
  10:28pm
PB:

The Wooden Shjips track was also great. I'm pretty sure it is available on Vol 1. As I mentioned on Bodah's comments board, the Wooden Shjips remix that Sonic Boom did is incredible.
  10:30pm
Smoking Gun:

Who's calling the shots here, Clay Pigeon??!
  10:31pm
Spoony:

Wait, it's just hitting me…it took this long for Jon Spencer to cover "Black Betty?"
  10:32pm
SteveL:

Spoony: Absolutely with you on that. I thought it was an older recording that I'd never heard.
  10:33pm
Danne D:

EFD goes proggy!!! :)

Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
Hey EFD :)

  10:36pm

gateway prog lol
  10:36pm
PB:

Tough crowd efd. you should be used to that by now.
  10:36pm
Danne D:

@G I only listen to Topographic if all 4 sides are played at once. See Scott's playlist from a week ago to see what I mean :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
efd:

ok, I guess this song is a little proggy too...
  10:38pm
G:

I was busy that afternoon and saw it in archives, Danne, and actually broke down and listened to the whole thing!
  10:38pm
john:

It starts with an Atomic Rooster song. Next you'll have a Gentle Giant poster on the studio wall, and finally you'll end up showing up to do your show wearing Barclay James Harvest footie pajamas.
  10:38pm
Danne D:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/44260 see Yesyesyesyes and check it out sometime - it's actually quite amazing (no schtick)
  10:39pm

Soon cheri will be asking Evan what his favorite song by the Nice is...
  10:39pm
Three Eyed Puppet:

My name is Vance, and I approve this proggage.
  10:41pm
Danne D:

So Commissioner Evan - any word on when you'll be throwing the switch on the draft? :)
  10:42pm
Holly in NC:

Finally here for real once I feed cats! Thank you for Infinity People, efd.
  10:42pm
Three Eyed Puppet:

  10:45pm
miss cheri:

good night danne--please don't ignore me like evan,,
  10:45pm
Three Eyed Puppet:

sigh.
  10:46pm
Danne D:

Clearly Evan meant 2112 not 2012!
  10:46pm
Three Eyed Puppet:

There's no song out there about "ticket salad sandwiches"??? Huh???
  10:47pm
Danne D:

gnight cheri

Danne, that info is in the commissioner's note!

Danne D:

Evan I suggest the following song as a possibility for Ticket Salad Surger...I mean Sandwich Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EumMkGD9Sgc
  10:48pm
PB:

I bought a Ringo Greatest Hits CD about 20 years ago for 2 songs: Back Off Boogaloo and It Don't Come Easy. It is still in the shrinkwrap.
  10:48pm
Danne D:

(Might be something you can work with - seriously - in spite of it playing along with the theme that is pervading tonight's comments board)
  10:49pm
miss cheri:

evan i just want to say night,, see you all soon!!
  10:49pm
Holly in NC:

Why has no one else noticed that the new Ringo lp is actually pretty darn good?
  10:49pm
the glowing one:

This Ringo Starr song is one of those "why" songs. why is the world so bad? why did my love run away? why why? and no, we don't know what to do. we don't have a clue.
  10:50pm
Danne D:

Ah I finally so the old commish note. Thx EFD!
  10:50pm
Danne D:

@holly cuz the kids are trying to answer the question of who that Paul McCartney guy is ;)
  10:51pm
Holly in NC:

@PB - Those are 2 great songs...
  10:51pm

well this ringo's track is surprisingly good, dont think im gonna listen to the whole album though
  10:51pm
groucho:

Manchester, England signing in. nice one on the Ringo Starr!
  10:52pm
PB:

@Holly, yes they are, especially It Don't Come Easy.
  10:52pm
Holly in NC:

@Danne - Too true. That depressed me for days.
  10:55pm

I just read in a back issue of one of the music mags that Macca just released an album of "standards". Sounds like it would be execrable.

@PB - In deference to efd, I'll refrain from my usual Yankee story ;-)

Which reminds me thank you all (& especially Randy) - for not bringing up Duke. Go State!

We always thank everyone for not bringing up Duke.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

PB, I think Glenn Frey just did the same thing? Not to compare Paul McCartney to Glenn Frey.

Thanks, Ignore Function!

AZ, awesome! I was wondering when you guys were getting out here (or at least to this time zone). Looking forward to seeing you and LJP!
  10:58pm
groucho:

If I were a Beatle then I wouldn't spend all my time after the Beatles trying to write songs that would please everyone the way the Beatles seamlessly did. Opinions are subjective. as long as Ringo and Macca like what they're making then good on them. I'd kill to be in their shoes anyday.
  10:58pm
AZ:

MInd Spiders = one of the bands I'm sorriest that I didn't see at SXSW. Everyone who caught them last week was blown away.

  11:01pm

@PB - No.
  11:03pm

i can tell you, unequivocally, that a ringo starr and the all starrs show is the best time you'll ever have.
  11:04pm
the glowing one:

I guess Ringo is an acquired taste
  11:05pm
Camel:

Brutal! :-P
  11:05pm
Danne D:

One day that Ringo guy will finally get his big break
  11:05pm
groucho:

don't worry Evan, here in the UK, our best station, BBC 6 Music, hasn't played the new Ringo album either. Good on ya!
  11:07pm
G:

On Ringo: As soon as he dies, people will flip over and say what an undervalued genius he was. Standard operating procedure. The Cumaean Sybil hath spoken.
  11:08pm
Danne D:

wow there's even more BBC's than there are ESPN's!
  11:08pm
the glowing one:

@danne d: you mean break as in drum beat break? not likely to happen
  11:09pm
G:

@Danne: They started adding BBCs on the radio in the late 60s when Parliament outlawed the offshore pirate stations. Some of them even hired the better pirate DJs.
  11:10pm
PB:

Ringo was perfect for the Beatles though: he could hold a beat and was never called upon to do anything flashy, appeared to have little ego and knew he was the single luckiest guy in the world.
  11:12pm
joe d:

EFD! Thoughts on Paul Collins being kicked off the Peter Case / Paul Collins tour?
  11:12pm
G:

I've had professional working drummers tell me now and then that Ringo is actually a really important drummer, not for flash technique, but for overall feel and for fitting lots of different kinds of songs really well.
  11:12pm
groucho:

G: depends who you ask. he's god-tier in the UK, but you're right, Happened with George when he passed

Danne D: I recommend a listen to BBC 6. not during the day tho as there's a playlist, albeit an Indie playlist, but it get's tiresome, but on a night it's as freeform as WFMU, but with access to tens of thousands of John Peel sessions (google him if you don't know him, he's responsible for The Fall, The Wedding Present and just about every good british band since the pirate radio stations of the 60's)

Ah, G just explained pirate stations while typing. Good man!

Tom Jones on Jack White's label? ... ???
  11:13pm
G:

Although a Yank, I lived in the UK back then, groucho, so I actually knew!
  11:13pm
groucho:

G: Ringo was the only member of the Beatles to never mess up a take.
  11:14pm
glenn:

well, evan's a drummer, so i'm sure he knows better than i, but i think ringo IS vastly underrated as a drummer.
  11:14pm
G:

And in my experience, solid working drummers really see (rather, hear), Ringo's virtues, groucho. :-)
  11:15pm
G:

maybe efd will comment, but playing ringo's rather ignored new album (it's only 7.99 in mp3 form, not 9.99) does say something already!
  11:16pm
the glowing one:

@groucho: yep, http://www.discogs.com/Tom-Jones-EvilJezebel/release/3468262
  11:16pm
Holly in NC:

@efd - have you seen that recently viral (in certain circles) video of Tom Jones in a speedo warbling 'sloop john b'? Quite something... http://bit.ly/GKQPco ...AND it goes James Bond @ the end!
  11:16pm
PB:

With the exception of certain freak talents like Keith Moon, drummers (even really good ones) are often taken for granted.
  11:19pm
groucho:

G: aah, maximum respect going your way, I'm only 25 so I wasn't even there for britpop let alone the beatles, but luckily I'm inquisitive and the internet's been invented
  11:19pm
glenn:

every musician should take drum lessons.
  11:20pm
groucho:

cheers Glowing One
  11:21pm
Danne D:

Economy of comments on part is yielding quite the impressive responses. BBC 6 sounds cool - just thought it was funny how everything is BBC # there. What is the highest numbered BBC?

The Ringo line was tongue in cheek of course. I've heard the same about Ringo and his importance. A drummer more appreciated for his drumming by drummers than by the public at large.

  11:26pm

The way one working drummer tried to explain it to me is that different drummers have different feels. Some tend to go slightly ahead of the actual beat, some slightly behind, and some right on it. Some vary it up depending on the musical situation at a given moment. Having excellent and tasteful control of exactly where your drum strikes are in relation to the beat of the rest of the music is the key to being a drummer who really serves the energy of the music well. Or so the dude said, and I think I hear what he means when I focus on listening only to a drum part (which most non-drummers don't do much).

phew, what an overwhelming response to the tickets tonight! Left me all discombobulated.

@Julie, au contraire! And glenn, yes, 1974.

groucho:

we did have a bbc 7 but it got changed to 4 extra (4 is talk radio, 4 extra is a recap of their comedy and dramas) 1 & 2 are sh*te music, 1 being dance/dubstep/pop and 2 being smooth/easy listening for people who don't know anything about music. 3 is classic music, 4 is speech, 5Live is sport and 6Music is, well, Music for people who really like music. It's good, equal ranking with FMU in my opinion, but I'm a biased John Peel fanatic. couldn't live without my WFMU when the daytime playlist kicks in though, or like now (middle of the night), there's a doc on called McCartney on McCartney, which I've heard a thousand times before

I recall that when he was the drummer for the Jesus & Mary Chain Bobby Gillespie played a single snare drum with kettle drum sticks. Now that's cool even if "borrowed" from Maureen Tucker.

glenn:

oh, i just remembered. apparently, back in the day, musicians would do interview records and send them to radio stations, along with a script of the questions to ask. my friend bought a mccartney interview record at a record show. we spent a few entertaining hours making up ridiculous questions and playing macca's answers to completely different questions.
  11:44pm
