	9:51am trouble: something like this vivian: www.thegardencoop.com... i want an outdoor space that they can still use even if it snow, so the covering is good for sun and snow proofing. if you drop some sort of barrier below the ground level it will be difficult to dig under it
	9:52am Cecile: annie! Trouble, fresh eggs are great. Watch out for foxes! You laugh, but I've seen them in my Mpls neighborhood. They are resourceful little scalawags.
	9:56am Vivian: Thank you for the link. That is a nice looking coop. As far as my canine friends, I'm thinking about attaching metal sheeting to the bottom, bury it 6 inches into the ground and lay stones on top. That should discourage three dogs from entering the coop.
	9:56am Brain in KU: Cecile, we lost eight to the fox a few years ago. Terrible thing to find out. On the plus side, the eggs are sublime. They do get through lots of water & guzzle any rice, pasta & suchlike that is lying around.

	9:58am trouble: vivian my egg man says if you acclimate the dogs to the chickens they will learns to behave. they are your dogs i imagine? not wild beasts running by?

	9:59am dc pat: I wouldn't mind having couple chickens but I'd rather have a trout stream running through my tiny back yard.
	9:59am Brain in KU: Vivian, we had to make it quite clear to our cats that the chickens were untouchable. They quickly got the message. I'm sure the dogs would be the same, our beagle pup still thinks it is fun & barks his head off.
	10:00am Cecile: oooh. dcp. that would be awesome. Actually, we have a nearby restaurant with a trout stream out back. It's barbaric yet, exquisite. Very, very exquisite with almonds.

	10:01am Vivian: Yes, they are my dogs. But we also have feral cats in our neighborhood, in addition to raccoons, possums, rats, etc. My obstacle is to make the coop as safe as possible for the chickens.

	10:05am Cecile: Good plan. They are scrappy fighters, but claws and beaks only go so far.
	10:10am Brain in KU: Sad to say here in then UK foxes are an urban problem so it is very difficult to make it 100% safe as we found out. You have to do the best you can. trouble are you planning to get chicks or ex batteries?

	10:16am Brain in KU: Sounds good. It is amazing how many people think that you need a rooster to make eggs.
	10:18am Braveness23: I live in the city and have had chickens for about 4 years. Right now I have four beautiful hens. Since we are so urban I wouldn't consider a rooster.
	10:18am Brain in KU: There's nothing like collectying an egg that is still warm, you'll know because you will have heard the fanfare of laying. It's a miracle.

	10:19am northguineahills: ugh, the central shaft of one my earplugs (i use to sleep) broke through the body of the concentric plastic rings and was jamming into my tympanic membrane this morning. A little painful, but no damage.
	10:20am Braveness23: Our birds are named Sarah, Lucy, Speckles and Joan Jett. Yeah, it's great to have fresh eggs. There is no comparison to store bought.

	10:21am trouble: the only thing i am a bit nervous about with chickens is how much work it will be for a chicken sitter if i go away. how do you all deal with that? like what about going away for the weekend even?

	10:23am Braveness23: We've had no problem at all getting sitters. You surely have a friend who would be thrilled to look after your girls for a couple days in exchange for fresh eggs.
	10:24am Cheri Pi: I wish I could chicken sit, but watching your dog is also a real treat.
	10:26am Vivian: From what I read, it doesn't take that much time to tend to chickens, especially if you're away from the weekend. Have you joined a local group of chicken folk? If you help someone out by chicken sitting for them, they could return the favor.
	10:26am annie: trouble, one thing you have to prepare for is the availability of gmo-free feed for them... most commercial chicken and stock feed is sourced from gm supplies, big-time!
	10:27am Braveness23: Cheri, if you are serious we would love it if you would chicken sit but we have a pretty good reciprocating arrangement with another bird owner so we don't really need a sitter for them
	10:29am Brain in KU: If you have friends with children it will be fun. Let them out in the morning, feed, change water etc.( the chickens, that is) They put themselves to bed at night, love to snuggle up on their perches. Make sure they are locked up. No problem.
	10:30am fox: trouble, chickens aren't so hard. some people leave a lot of food (a chimney type feeder) and water (similar) and its fine, although it helps if they have enough space not to fowl it completely (heh) while you are gone. other people just let me take care of it.

	10:32am ~L: My friend raises chickens and it is hard to keep them alive due to frequent fox attacks!

	10:38am trouble: thanks guys for the good words about chickens. i am sort of a trendsetter on this in my ciommunity. although there is a guy a block away with 11 silkies, but he works lots and has his tenant care formthem, we have tried to talk but always missing each other.

	10:42am Vivian: Trouble, I know you dislike Facebook but check to see if there is a chicken group near you. I found fellow neighbors who raise chickens through that route. It's a good place to ask questions and obtain info.
	10:42am βrian: I've been chicken sitting this week for my neighbors. Pretty fun and already a dozen fresh eggs. They're let out once a day to get their ya-yas out. They really fancy dirt baths.

	9:56am Vivian: Thank you for the link. That is a nice looking coop. As far as my canine friends, I'm thinking about attaching metal sheeting to the bottom, bury it 6 inches into the ground and lay stones on top. That should discourage three dogs from entering the coop.
	9:56am Brain in KU: Cecile, we lost eight to the fox a few years ago. Terrible thing to find out. On the plus side, the eggs are sublime. They do get through lots of water & guzzle any rice, pasta & suchlike that is lying around.

	9:59am Brain in KU: Vivian, we had to make it quite clear to our cats that the chickens were untouchable. They quickly got the message. I'm sure the dogs would be the same, our beagle pup still thinks it is fun & barks his head off.
	10:00am Cecile: oooh. dcp. that would be awesome. Actually, we have a nearby restaurant with a trout stream out back. It's barbaric yet, exquisite. Very, very exquisite with almonds.

	10:01am Vivian: Yes, they are my dogs. But we also have feral cats in our neighborhood, in addition to raccoons, possums, rats, etc. My obstacle is to make the coop as safe as possible for the chickens.

	10:18am Braveness23: I live in the city and have had chickens for about 4 years. Right now I have four beautiful hens. Since we are so urban I wouldn't consider a rooster.

	10:26am Vivian: From what I read, it doesn't take that much time to tend to chickens, especially if you're away from the weekend. Have you joined a local group of chicken folk? If you help someone out by chicken sitting for them, they could return the favor.
	10:26am annie: trouble, one thing you have to prepare for is the availability of gmo-free feed for them... most commercial chicken and stock feed is sourced from gm supplies, big-time!
	10:27am Braveness23: Cheri, if you are serious we would love it if you would chicken sit but we have a pretty good reciprocating arrangement with another bird owner so we don't really need a sitter for them
	10:29am Brain in KU: If you have friends with children it will be fun. Let them out in the morning, feed, change water etc.( the chickens, that is) They put themselves to bed at night, love to snuggle up on their perches. Make sure they are locked up. No problem.
	10:30am fox: trouble, chickens aren't so hard. some people leave a lot of food (a chimney type feeder) and water (similar) and its fine, although it helps if they have enough space not to fowl it completely (heh) while you are gone. other people just let me take care of it.
