Hi Scott. Great tune!
  3:04pm
kat330:

And don't fool Mother Nature either.
  3:05pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

she zap yo sorry ass
  3:06pm
kat330:

At least we're back to a more reasonable, seasonable spring in these parts. Out FMU way, too, I imagine.
  3:08pm
Daniel:

This had a great, bright-red video. They don't make em like that anymore.
  3:08pm
pierre:

Bonjour Lila, Scott and listeners !
  3:08pm
kat330:

@Daniel: Got a link? Hi, Pierre!
  3:13pm

Hola everbody! Lila & I shall be addressing you shortly. yeah, watch out for that R&TL vid, it's a wowzer
  3:25pm
Cecile:

I think I watched it between my fingers back in the 80s.
  3:28pm
kat330:

@Scott: Thanks for the warning (if late ;). Um these might be fun for l'il Lila (and dad, too). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXWOhNoJhdY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xl4L-6OF_A
  3:28pm
Cecile:

you have to slip Lila some crummy music, Scott. If you grow up with too rarefied a taste, bad stuff happens.
  3:28pm
Daniel:

@Cecile - Btw my fingers, yes! That vid made me profoundly anxious about the mysteries of adulthood. A worry which has now been renewed.
  3:29pm
Cecile:

I don't even dare watch it.
Adulthood is traumatic enough.
  3:30pm
Cecile:

I mean, you don't want her hearing a Maroon 5 song and going into anaphalactic shock.
  3:31pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Lila's got some good taste for a what-year-old.
  3:34pm

Does your daughter like the Bee Gees?

when my daughter was 6 she listened to the Kinks, Beatles, Clash, Ramones. Now (at 11) she listens to nothing but Lady Gaga, Katie Perry, etc., etc., etc... Keep the pressure on Scott.
  3:49pm
allan:

i listened to nothing but weird al and jeff foxworthy until i was 13. how did i end up at fmu?
  3:50pm
Cecile:

Hey, Lady Gaga performed onstage with Yoko Ono:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A2j-tyUfn0
  3:51pm
Cecile:

you have a strong sense of absurdity, allan. FMU is nothing if not absurd 95% of the time.
  3:52pm
hubba:

My daughter likes Lady Gaga, but so do I. Recently we watched Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and now she is hooked on the Bee Gees. She loves watching Yellow Submarine when she has a fever... go figure. Musicals have been great gateways... plus, when I play the droney weird stuff it is like just the stuff in the house, like the background that is always there...she zones out... We just say no to radio because of the inundation and lack of autonomy.
  3:53pm
Sam:

You let your 6 year old listen to the Ramones? That seems like irresponsible parenting, no offense.
  3:55pm
allan:

reality is absurd. wfmu is reality? oh im so glad works almost over thank for the tunes scott
  3:57pm
BSI:

Before age 10 it was all pre-disco ELO, early Queen, and suchlike until somebody gave me a shortwave radio, and, well..... nature took its course I guess....
  3:57pm
Cecile:

Ramones are bubblegum pop, just fast, Sam.
I mean, if I had kids, I'd let them listen to selected songs. Nothing about glue sniffing, but Rockaway Beach is a great song, and my nieces and nephews love it.
  3:58pm
hubba:

"Hey ho, Let's Go" is how we go out to dinner... "Beat on the brat" is the loving way to get her teeth brushed before we loon-out... there is no such thing as a responsible parent, unless you are incarcerated, then i guess you've been served...
  3:59pm
mchuge:

Hello, I'm Mr. Ed.
  3:59pm
Spicoli:

Wait a minute, there's no birthday party for me here.
  4:00pm
dc pat:

aw man, kids are way smarter than you think. I let them listen to everything I listen to. They know they're just songs. Both kids love Beat on the Brat but they know it's not advice, it's just silly to them. My daughter has no idea what a Junko Partner is but we loved singing it together.
  4:00pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

just ate a pink jellybean
  4:00pm
BSI:

oh man, DCE, it's down the rabbit-hole for you. Just relax & float downstream...
  4:01pm
Cecile:

And this is coming from the person who took off the "naughty" songs off the first De La Soul album when she taped it for her 10 year old nephew. He thought it was hilarious. (He'd heard them all already)
  4:01pm
hello:

wut a wonderful word, hello
  4:02pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

the pink ones are just s'posed to be decorous. also, don't smoke the "easter grass".
  4:02pm
Sam:

When I was six I memorized Tom Lehrer's song "Smut" and I used to belt it out on the swing set. "I want smut and nothing but! I'm a market they can't glut! I don't know what compares with smut!" I didn't have any idea what it meant.
  4:03pm
dc pat:

when I was in Colonial Williamsburg couple weeks ago, I saw a 5 pound Gumi bear. It was big as a football and looked disgusting..
  4:03pm
Mr. Lowry:

I had to look up "Junko Partner."
  4:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

now that should be something that unites this splintered country, dc pat...ridding our cultural landmarks of monster gummis.
  4:04pm
hubba:

@dc pat -that is the future... full-body gummi bear suits...
  4:04pm
dc pat:

right and besides the crap the play on top 40 radio stations is WAY worse than any of my punk rock. It's all sex and getting loaded...

Mr. Lowry: Clash cover off Sandinista. Probably my fave Clash tune.
  4:05pm
dc pat:

hubba: if I used the phrase "lol" I'd use it now
  4:06pm
Dave B:

@dc pat. That gumi probably has the density of ballistic gel. And about the same nutritional value

Hey there Scott W and Lila!
  4:06pm
still b/p:

I have an unopened bag of Gummi bears brought as a gift from Germany more than ten years ago. Not so gummy now. What am I bid?
  4:06pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

make a fire, and throw it in. I bet you get boom booms.
  4:07pm
dc pat:

oh man, one time my daughter got some ice cream w/ gumis in it--mistake. Those things freeze at fairly low temperatures. They were hard as rocks.
  4:07pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I can't think of gummies without thinking of the Eek The Cat's friends the Squishy Bears and the fact that they had hilariously large claws.
  4:07pm
Cheri Pi:

I like the bears, the bears that go boom.
  4:08pm
Sam:

There's not enough good quality stuff for kids out there. All the stuff aimed at kids is so terrible, it's low quality and hyperactive which makes kids spastic and obnoxious. There's not enough calm intelligent stuff, like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.
  4:08pm
dc pat:

you guys know what a flaming groovy is? you tie some knots in a plastic trash bag, hang it up and light it on fire. It makes star wars blaster sounds.
  4:08pm
Michael Durek:

Like that last one...nice pulsing bass
  4:08pm
BSI:

Still waiting for someone to market a gummy jellyfish. It's so damned redundant it would hatch a black hole. Maybe?
  4:09pm
hubba:

I know right... i feel like the fro yo nazi... the worms are lame too... i don't care if you get 5 tables spoons of sugar, but for god's sake, drop those gummi ball bearings!!
  4:10pm
hubba:

Wejammed the mister roger's scd we got from the library... one song almost made me cry, to hell with it, i did cry. It was about a baby coming home to replace you, but you are too special to replace.
  4:11pm
Sam:

I love St. Etienne.
And Broadcast!
  4:12pm
Sam:

He also has that song "It's alright to cry", so you see, it's normal and therapeutic.

Hey Scott and Lyla! It's my birthday today (I'm 28 and live in Vancouver, BC) and it was pretty cool to wake up, turn on WFMU, and hear that "Happy Birthday" remix first thing in the morning! Great show :)
  4:14pm
Mike East:

Any thoughts from other parents on lying to kids about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? I'm very conflicted.
  4:17pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

oh, we never really LIED to the kids, Mike...we just didn't discourage what they picked up everywhere else. I guess that's a form of lying, though. It's OK for kids to have a fantasy life, after all.
  4:18pm
dc pat:

Mike: to me it's a matter of making kids lives a magical paradise--or as much as possible. I still haven't admitted to my daughter there is no Santa even though she knows. I want them to think magic is real. I think my daughter still believes I got a ring for her from a mermaid.
  4:18pm
Andrew Waterloo:

My ex has always told my daughter that there is no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny. I've just always told her, well yah, but we'll pretend there is a Santa Claus and Easter Bunny cause daddy enjoys it.
  4:19pm
hubba:

i let the people my daughter interacts with define that situation (family members, classmates, fictional characters). I play along as a good capitalist, but not without some critical prodding. we are not a part of a community per se, nor are we church goers. my daughter believes in God, so that is where she stands on the issue. I let her tell me these things, and while i try my hand at rhetoric, she has an awesome shit storm wating down the road called "life," so however she wants to deal with that... god speed.
  4:19pm
still b/p:

My brother and his wife sat my niece down and gave her the straight story Christmas before last, rather than letting her figure it out or hear it elsewhere on her own. She was about nine, she was still all in, but they thought it was time.
  4:20pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I love Ben but I have to say there is a better chance of a kid being there than Ben being there.
  4:20pm
dc pat:

...oh, well I guess I don't shy away from telling the kids there's no god. But Santa's fun, god is boring.
  4:21pm
dc pat:

gotta go, keep rockin.
  4:22pm
BSI:

hey, where's MY magical paradise?
eh? EHHNH!?!?!
  4:22pm
Michele:

Lila you are so awesome! Great singing!
  4:22pm
vanya:

wow how she hit that note!
  4:23pm
fred:

I don't have kids, but I remember quite well how I reacted when I learned there was no Santa. No big deal, but it seemed to be a big deal to parents, so I played along for a while, it seemed to mean so much more to them. Don't misunderestimate kids
  4:23pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'll send you a pink jellybean, BSI.
  4:24pm
still b/p:

You are listening and posting in it. So get sparkle-eyed pronto!
  4:25pm
paula pc:

son of a gun never stops anyone from smiling!!!
  4:25pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I just approach that stuff by asking my daughter questions about how she 'knows' these things that she believes. Or when she talks about God I offer alternate ideas, such as God has all the answers and I'll say, but Google has a lot of answers too.
  4:26pm
Mike East:

I convinced her that the Easter Bunny came while she was on a walk with her mom and I was at the supermarket. He/she hid eggs filled with cash and candy all over the house. I made Christmas just as magical. It kinda blew my mind how much she seemed to buy it.
  4:29pm
fred:

@Mike: you can do it too. Let her teach you that trick
  4:31pm
Mike East:

My question is - When do I get credit for putting all this extra effort into making magic seem real? (and don't give me any of that crap about my reward being the smile on her face)
  4:31pm
Derek:

Would love to hear Chris Knox sing again... such a shame
  4:32pm
Cheri Pi:

Oh this is gonna be good; go Lila!
  4:33pm
hubba:

@Mike East - if you find out let me know... I'm all about big payoffs... so far it has yielded about as much as a broken nickel slots machine.
  4:34pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

karma, dudes, karma...it may take awhile, but it will come back!
  4:38pm
Waqas:

how's it going Scott?

yaaay i get to listen to your show live again!!!! :))

btw have you heard of a group called "automatic writting?" they're two guys from britain. they have a late 70's darkwave sound to them. i think you'd like them. they have a facebook page.
  4:38pm
fred:

@Mike: You call it. The smile on your face is all you'll get.
  4:40pm
Andrew Waterloo:

My reward has been hearing my daughter's theories on how Santa Claus get all those presents delivered, or how the Easter Bunny really operates.

if I hear a song twice on FMU, I feel like its in the hot rotation. I must have heard this one at least 3 times over the past decade..

Asanarama:

My eyebrow raised itself earlier when it sounded like you had to "bleep" part of a song with Lila in the room, but when you had to "bleep" Lila herself, it went back down.
  5:07pm
Cecile:

Steve Lacy is always a good pick.
  5:10pm
hubba:

Yeah, Fred had good points... I think Mike East was being fun. I know most of what I say on here is tongue and cheek. I don't want to expose myself and feel bad about my ability to perceive something differently than another person. At the same time, what we do as parents really is of no direct consequence since family is not the dominant institution for socialization. yet, what we do is part of how that little person makes sense, or non-sense, of the world. I know I'm still learning, and my daughter instructs me all the time
  5:18pm
Mike East:

@hubba. I agree with you. I was being fun, but it came from a real place. There was a moment where I had to outright lie ("Wait did you put these eggs here?!" "No, I was at the store and they were here when I got back"). I felt kind of bad about that. But I focused on how happy it seemed to make her and at the innocence of believing in magic.
  5:25pm
hubba:

It is that awareness that you are lying, and you want to relay the internal dilemna of wishing that it was shared magic, not manufactured... I love the feeling of constructing that expereince, but i wish someone would do it for me... and maybe that is what Fred was getting at. I keep thinking, when i let her design her reality, that i should be more forcefull in educating her to not believe in something used against her for other reasons... i want her to question everything, but even then, we all to some degree subordinate ourselves to mythology. It does not feel good knowing that.
  5:29pm
Cecile:

They will have plenty of time to question reality. Look at it as a little play you are putting on for your kids.
  5:31pm
Cecile:

once i knew about Santa Claus, then I knew I could grow up and be Santa for littler kids once I was a grownup.
  5:34pm
hubba:

I wanted to draw the line with the Easter Bunny. My partner said it is a Spring celebration... I could dig that. I do tell our daughter that from Halloween to New Year's is a festival of sorts, a non-stop party to keep warm and to share good vibes. But, I shut down in the springtime... it begins with Valentine's Day, and I'm reluctant to care about anything remotely Hallmark-like. But, it is not about me, so like a washed-up dinner theatre actor, the show goes on.
  5:37pm
Cecile:

I think there are far worse lies floating around told to their kids. Like grandmothers pretending to be moms. Or kids thinking their dad is really their dad. Or daddy has a second family we don't know about. Or Mommy went away because she doesn't love you, and don't go into the shed.
I watch way too much ID TV.
Anyway, hubba, she'll appreciate it. Most kids only care about Valentine's day for the candy. They think it's mushy and dumb, and their hand hurts addressing those little cards to the rest of the class (projecting...)
  5:38pm
Cecile:

But as a grown-up I think it's swell. At least for me.
  5:39pm
Mike East:

I should also mention that I recycled candy from Valentines Day and Halloween that is still floating around.
  5:41pm
Cecile:

And the deception continues...:D

But seriously? You still have candy around? I bow to your willpower.
  5:43pm
Mike East:

There was sooo much! We pick at it once in a while, but I can only eat so many Nerds before feeling sick.
  5:44pm
Cecile:

we get a ton of kids in our neigborhood, but we scaled back. Actually turned off the light early this year.
  5:45pm
shaken:

i haven't heard this song in a long time and i forgot why but it makes me cry when it gets to "the sun" part
  5:46pm
hubba:

I go all out, at the last minute, but all out... i try and support anyone's perspective because there life is difficult enough to be overtly concered about right/wrong.
So, does anyone evoke the "candy witch?" My partner tried to apply this entity in regards to the two tons of jellybeans yesterday... i think in retrun the kid gets plastic junk or money, sounds like a win-win... kid to mom: "the candy witch is not real."
  5:47pm
Cecile:

it is pretty lovely, shaken

this track, though...
  5:56pm
Cecile:

this song is also lovely.
