Every show starts with the ’70s! We’ll rediscover forgotten rockers, revisit unfairly maligned disco beats and replay power-pop favorites. Next: plenty of new releases, occasional live bands and more. Don’t let the nickname confuse you.

Favoriting July 11, 2012: JESSE JARNOW live, talking about his new book Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the Rise of Indie Rock

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Yo La Tengo are certainly no strangers to WFMU or WFMU listeners, but it's doubtful that even the most ardent fan is aware of all the historic details and decade-spanning connections uncovered in the fascinating new book Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and The Rise Of Indie Rock. Music writer and, yes, WFMU DJ Jesse Jarnow links the lengthy and at times meandering rise of YLT to such hallowed institutions as Maxwell's, New York Rocker, Matador Records and many more; listen now as Jesse and EFD discuss the book and play music from YLT and others!

Listener comments!

  9:05pm
Holly in NC:

oh my goodness hi & first!
  9:06pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Did you see that the Blank Generation movie was posted on the Dangerous Minds blog (not the CBGB movie by Amos Poe but the fictional movie starring Richard Hell and with some performances by the Voidoids at CBGB)
  9:07pm
SteveL:

Any show starting w/ Richard Hell is bound to please. Missed half of the first track. Busy pinning the lab so my wife could trim his nails. Ahhh, pet ownership.
  9:09pm
Holly in NC:

@Jesse - last week I purchased, vociferously read & very much enjoyed BDC, looking forwrad to your chat w efd!
  9:10pm
Thierry from behind the Right Ocean:

Hi EFD! Looking forward to a bit of history tonight.
  9:11pm
Holly in NC:

@SteveL - In small favor department, be thankful you're not bathing a cat.
  9:13pm
SteveL:

Cat bathing is for the foolhardy.
  9:17pm
SteveL:

I'm still rooting for the surf Renaissance. Saw the Raybeats in the same Madison WI club, (Merlyns) that I saw the original Ventures, who were a bit overwhelmed, (but touched) at the slam-dancing reception they received.
  9:17pm
Thierry:

Luxury tracks coming to your playlist!
  9:17pm
Joe D.:

I would much rather prefer to have been in my 20s when this record came out rather than not alive, which is what I actually was. Don't get me wrong... right now is pretty cool too. I guess. I'm attracted by all the sweaters is what I'm saying.
  9:17pm
miss cheri:

hey evan & holly--tomorrow is my birthday,,and i was wondering evan ,,if you could play "stand tall" by burton cummings?? cause that's my favorite cumming tune evan!!
  9:18pm
Holly in NC:

xoxox crazy rhythms xxoxo

@SteveL - Cat bathing is for the 'owner' of 3 cats who like to roll in the remnants of their prey
  9:18pm
miss cheri:

*cummings*
  9:18pm
PB:

I think she meant cummings (or maybe not).
  9:19pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Good evening Evan and all the listeners.
  9:20pm
Joe D.:

also the crowd dancing in all the Feelies live videos I've seen is just A+ fantastic. Nobody dances to music like this anymore. Except for me and I feel weird about it.
  9:20pm
MALACH:

feelies hits home
  9:22pm
McG:

Meet the Mets. Nice. Bring your kiddies. Bring your wife. Girlfriends stay at home.
  9:22pm
Holly in NC:

Happy almost birthday, Cheri :-)
  9:23pm
miss cheri:

  9:26pm
SteveL:

  9:27pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

God, I haven't seen Janet Waegel in about thirty years!
  9:27pm
McG:

He owns the LP. Please.
  9:30pm
SteveL:

Oh, I think I need to buy a book.
  9:31pm
PB:

Me too, I'm a sucker for good music books, every time. Sounds very interesting.
  9:32pm
Thierry:

Man, we're starting from the 1800's!
  9:37pm
PB:

Not to take any of the spotlight from Jesse but another great book about "indie rock" is Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad.
  9:42pm
Joe D.:

gonna rewrite this song as "I read Brooklyn Vegan"
  9:42pm
Joe D.:

or would that just depress everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
efd:

the latter.
  9:44pm
Mike East:

nice interview, nice tunes, efd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
efd:

Thanks for tuning in everyone! Keeping an eye on the comments, but not able to join in as much as usual, for obvious reasons
  9:45pm
Holly in NC:

@Jesse I hope you discuss Ira & Georgia's Roadfood obsession (which I share)

@PB - Azerrad's a fun read but factually pitiful. Sloppy as heck.
  9:48pm
miss cheri:

evan--the show rocks tonight! btw will you please play that burton cummings tune later for my birthday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
efd:

sorry cheri, no burton cummings but happy birthday nonetheless
  9:49pm
PB:

Yes, Evan, please play that noted indie rocker, Burton Cummings.
  9:50pm
MALACH:

ahhh this track is on a mix I downloaded from Jesse in the winter...i think
Avatar 9:56pm
Julie:

Monday night 3am is a GREAT time :)
  10:05pm
SteveL:

So, I'd love to get this book for a premium, but I'll probably have to get it before then. Not well acquainted with YLT, but frankly, it all sounds like too much for a rock history geek to pass up.
  10:07pm
miss cheri:

hi there julie,,
  10:10pm
matt:

Just joined the show its funny ive just been getting into them heavily recently. What a wonderful band. What is the name of the book?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
efd:

Hi Matt! The book is called 'Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the Rise of Indie Rock," by Jesse Jarnow.
  10:13pm
Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
Pretty much in hang back and listen mode tonight.
Great interview, Evan and Jesse!

@matt - see the left of the screen after the date for the name of the book :D
  10:13pm
DEED:

  10:16pm

  10:18pm
Holly in NC:

  10:18pm
Herb:

Please, tell all that YLT are very very funny people
  10:21pm
Joe D.:

I am a spicy food junkie, but I must shout out to the spiciest chicken I ever ate, which was at a Sloppyheads show. Good eats.
  10:21pm
jj.:

holly & deed & anybody else who's read/enjoyed, thanks!
  10:22pm
jj.:

oh my god joe, that chicken was psychedelic.
  10:24pm
Joe D.:

it really was unbelievably fantastically spicy and awesome.
  10:25pm
~L:

Just asked my town's library to buy this book!
  10:27pm
Holly in NC:

Jane & Michael Stern. See also GoodFood
  10:36pm
Danne D:

I have to guiltily admit that I wasn't cool enough to realize that guy hanging out in the Terre T marathon phone room was Ira K until probably like the 3rd or 4th year I saw him. I was not one of the cool kids in my younger days (still not)
Avatar 10:39pm
Julie:

Yeah I was having dinner next to him one night and I had no idea :) I'm also very uncool.
  10:42pm
Danne D:

Hell, I did the same with Ted Leo. I'm not very good at the Indie Hipster thing
Avatar 10:47pm
Julie:

what about the Hindi Ipster thing?
  10:49pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Since we''re on the topic of rock books, I have to say that the Burton Cummings bio,"Becumming Burton Cummings, " is a riveting read. The chapter on moustache grooming alone had me on the edge of my seat.
  10:49pm
PB:

Great cover of one of my favorite Beach Boys songs. Cover of Little Honda is pretty good too.
  10:49pm
PB:

Although the vocal is not quite as sweet as Carl Wilson's.
  10:50pm
Danne D:

@Julie I don't do spicy foods really so I can't do the Hindi Ipster thing either.
  10:51pm
PB:

Bark - very funny.
  10:57pm
PB:

Oops, I guess the Beach Boys version was also a cover, original recording was by the Ronettes.
  10:58pm
miss cheri:

hiya julie & danne, tomorrow is my birthday!!
  10:58pm
Holly in NC:

Re Hipster Indie - think I've mentioned before, but Dan
Melchior & I served each other food for years & didn't "meet" until 1 day he saw me reading WFMU Beware of the Blog while I was lunching @ his place
  11:00pm
miss cheri:

julie i hope i'll see you later on,,
  11:06pm

  12:03am
SteveL:

Awesome closer. Underlines the whole premise. I love great radio.
  12:03am
Joe D.:

also, the caller who got Gerard Cosloy suspended for giving out his phone number was none other than The Best Show's own Greggulator, brother of Chris Gethard
