I join the "Caravan" of listeners heading over to Steinski..
12:05pm
Honey Water:
Howdy and drool folks! Yesterday's and today's soon-to-be lunch: I llather a pita pocket's interior with black olive tapenade. Strew in some shredded lettuce, crumbles of feta cheese and bacon, thinly mandarined cucumber slices, strips of roasted red pepper and grilled onions, chopped boiled egg and garden-fresh tomatoes, and a couple strips of grilled chicken breast. Opa! Pita perfection! Now, into the kitchen to prepare as I listen.
12:06pm
Honey Water:
Oh, yes, and Caravan's a fave, so this should be eggs-L-ent!
12:07pm
listener james from westwood:
oh, man, honey water, you're gonna have me going down to the greek joint a block away hearing about that lunch!
will listen to the archive (I like to listen to these start to finish). I love the Steinski archives. I enjoy the way he does his read backs (including a song snippet - it'd be cool if some other DJs - for the prerecorded shows - adopted a similar style).
It's also a TON of work. It means you can record the show live, you have to pre-record all the mic breaks and then edit in the sound snippets. I used to watch Steinski produce these shows. It took him 20 or more hours for each hour-long show. Incredible.

Did Caravan ever cover "Caravan"?
12:20pm
Honey Water:
OK, back from kitchen, but now hands in my pockets preoccupied.
@LJfW: Only those with a budget to keep pantry and fridge with all ingredients ever needed for anything could always "have that recipe again." But it's ever so nice when what's on hand comes together for a special taste treat! Can't think of any improvement to this -- a few pine nuts maybe.
Didn't Ornette Coleman call his group Caravan of Dreams for a while?
12:22pm
Honey Water:
Oh and [reluctantly putting down pita], Hi, back atcha Matt! :)
12:25pm
northguineahills:
It will be a while before I eat today. All of the talk of cheese yesterday got to me before I broke down and got into the Havarti & Muenster. Being lactose intolerant sucks (I even took lactaid beforehand). I regret nothing!
12:26pm
Matt from Springfield:
I may want to eata pita myself after hearing that wonderful description!
12:27pm
Carmichael:
I remember seeing the Neville Brothers and being surprised by their scorching Caravan version. Charles Neville and guitarist Brian Stoltz really "Duked" it out!
12:29pm
Honey Water:
@Matt: The tapenade is what's making this so extraordinary. Rarely do we have it on hand, thus the MacArthur Park aspect of it -- such a pita.
With my attention span, there are probably not very many singular melodies I could hear over and over for an hour, but Caravan is one for certain. Harlem Nocturne another, Rhapsody in Blue, Take 5, a few others.
I did an hour of "Hey Jude" a few months ago on my Tuesday show. Not sure I could've taken much longer...
12:35pm
trish:
Appreciate the lunch inspiration, Honey Water.
"Hey, I have most of that stuff.."

Honey Water:
Yay! Go for it, Trish!! :)
12:40pm
northguineahills:
This space age pop is groovy!
12:42pm
Honey Water:
@Doug: Guess I didn't catch that show so can't really ad-JUDE-icate it, but my guess is I might be climbing the curtains (and I don't even have any) by the 1/2-hour mark.
12:42pm
Matt from Springfield:
Lambert, Hendricks & Ross! Cool cats, they are. The original people who did "Twisted".
I remember hearing this program when it was originally broadcast. The playing of lots of different renditions of "Caravan" had already been going around at FMU, I think. Steinski brought this compulsion to a climax.
12:46pm
Danne D:
Steinski spoiled us listeners :)
12:47pm
Honey Water:
Kiitos, Doug!
12:47pm
Matt from Springfield:
@HW: The first version I (and most) probably hear. I heard it was a cover shortly after.

I totally agree with you. Steinski's innovation with his talkovers is just brilliant.
