Favoriting September 18, 2012: Mostly songs chosen by the guy who sells socks on the corner...

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Track Comments Approx. start time
Songs I Shazammed from the guy who sells socks on the corner of Myrtle-Broadway   That corner is a hell hole, but this guy always plays the best music!  0:00:00 (Pop-up)
The last castrato of all time...   It's true! Allessandro Moreschi, to my knowledge, is the last (and only) recorded castrato. Recording near the turn of the 20th century.  0:19:53 (Pop-up)

Melisa Morgan thru my phone     0:26:15 (Pop-up)
Really low res version of Claudja Barry   Oh, I still remember the afternoon when I walked by the sock salesman when he was playing this jam.  0:31:51 (Pop-up)
Milan Knizak   Czech fluxus dude who was doing really radical appropriation music for his time. He would cut up vinyl and paste it back together. We hear Bossonova Suite from 1980 and Broken Music from 1978.  0:38:37 (Pop-up)
John Cage's Radio Music   A score written for live radio players...every performance is different. 1956!!!! NINETEEN FIFTY SIX. Cage's work never ceases to amaze.  0:54:35 (Pop-up)
That scene from Reservoir Dogs   Hey man, I'm a lover, not a fighter. But I love this scene since it mixes campy guilty pleasures with harsh imagery. My heart...  0:59:34 (Pop-up)

Remix set   Got some live whalesong from whalesong.net, got some aurora borealis recordings...where's my Gene Rafferty at???  1:08:40 (Pop-up)
Burqa Boyz   Swisher house tape that Ormolycka just put out called Miami Arab Emirates.  1:25:30 (Pop-up)
Back to the remix set...   Mixin up this new Heroes of Toolik CD with Ed Saad and Bern Porter rantage, then fading up the new Date Palms split with Pulse Emitter. New Lee Scratch Perry collabo with The Orb.  1:45:25 (Pop-up)
Anton Maiden   Outsider cover of "Aces High" out on Nihilism recs.  1:53:18 (Pop-up)
Camp from Goodiepal   New stuff from this "radical computer music" theorist. He's really into camp lately, all these really Cruisin' USA-ed out jams...suits me.  1:57:54 (Pop-up)

Anthony Braxton   Composition no. 173 - I saw him play Roulette's 1 year anniversary at the new downtown Brooklyn space. Braxton's choral work is completely amazing! Very challenging. Sometimes embarrassing to listen to. Very disassociative. Lots of Cage-ian ideas floating around. Essential listening, I'd say.  2:10:23 (Pop-up)
New Thought Broadcast LP   S/T Vinyllll from the Olde English Spelling Bee record label.  2:20:54 (Pop-up)
New James Ferraro CD   Man! It's good!!!! Bodyguard/Silica Gel Mixtape, not on a label. This one's got some Memphis Bump inflections in it that are pretty out there.  2:28:48 (Pop-up)
The yodeling Astrologer   AKA Mij, an ESP disk release originally from 1969.  2:36:00 (Pop-up)
Plant And See Reissue amended     2:45:28 (Pop-up)

I turned on wfmu, though a little out of range of the signal. What comes through is a storm of sadness and need and the noise, unable to tell if it was two stations at once or just lost in the noise attempting to communicate it's own meaning.

Hi Luke. I dunno if we've got any L Ron Hubbard LPs, I've only heard one track by him before, which is pretty hilarious.

agree with you on the Braxton piece - the narrative is pretty awful but I keep listening to it ... (available btw on a nice (and cheap) 8-CD Black Saint/Soul Note box set)

Hurts so good! Who says good music needs to be pleasant to listen to?

Although I would say that the choral music IS sometimes very pleasant. But there's a lot of cringe-worthy stuff in there too.
  2:42am
from Italy:

yeah, the text is cringey ("and now let's make this sound ..."). Berio is a good antidote!

Hello from Poland. I slept 40 minutes last night (woke up 1,5hour ago) and you have completely turned my mind inside our with your music, Nat, especcially concidering my current state. I worry about myself how I will found my way through the pile of papers right now on my desk at the office. For now the yodeling Astrologer knocked me down.
