Listener comments!

  11:59am
listener james from westwood:

am i the first to show up? awkward. i'll drive around the block a couple of times to let someone else arrive.
  12:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Amanda!
I'm TAPING this episode! At least I would if I wasn't at work. And WFMU didn't Archive shows. And I had a tape recorder. And an audio tape...
  12:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi LJFW! Don't feel awkward--PROCLAIM your firstness!
  12:04pm
john:

woooooooooot!

Hey Amanda, just wanted to let you know that I started volunteering at my local college radio station (I work for the school) and hope to get my own show at least over the summer. This is a direct result of listening to your show. So, thank you. I hope I have somewhere close to as much fun as you do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Amanda:

Hi everyone! john, what a lovely thing to hear! I'm extremely flattered. And I have no doubt you'll be having tons of fun, I mean duh. :-)
  12:08pm
john:

I got to play three songs last week and it was so great. I love radio so damn much...
  12:10pm
lewis:

cool tape! hi amanda!
  12:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Amanda: All these found tapes, did you find any delusional/creepy/"incorrect" music, like R. Stevie Moore's found sounds?
  12:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Death In June is pretty good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Amanda:

Hi lewis! (And belated individual hi's to LJFW and MfS)

Not all of these are found tapes -- most are attic-clogging tapes of known provenance. But there are some found ones. I'll leave it up to you to decide how correct they are.
  12:14pm
listener james from westwood:

hope that's the beginning of a long radio career, john. congrats!
  12:14pm
northguineahills:

Well, didn't expect this from Amanda (all tracks thusfar). Sweet fullness of awesomeness!. I have a box full of mixtapes my gf keeps on trying to throw away, but, of course, that'll ne'er happen.....
  12:15pm
northguineahills:

...of course, that doesn't include the shelves of cassettes and dubbed tapes I have.....
  12:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'll decide based on how such found sounds "jump" at me! ;)

Best of luck for your radio show john! One thing's for sure, Amanda has made radio fun again! And our other hard working DJs too.
  12:17pm
john:

thanks, james! i really hope so, too...
  12:22pm
northguineahills:

I found a few albums of cassettes in the middle of the street in Bushwick last month (a few had been run over by traffic). I was excited at first, as they were new-agey lectures, but they had no new agey sounds/music, and no sample-worthy one-liners.
  12:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Fat Boys! Didn't know they did a rap on "Louie Louie"!
  12:27pm
Hugo:

Splendid idea doing tapes! I was listening to tapes from Indonesia last night. Kroncong, sunda, dangdut, gamelan. Mostly 80s stuff, got them in Jakarta. And there's a small stash of reggae from Malawi. I think I have one of Irvin's incorrect comps, too.
  12:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Obviously a rehearsal with the comments at the end, but "Calling All Cinderellas" is a great piece! I'll have to see who wrote/developed that.
  12:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Hugo: Irwin's been doing incorrect comps for years--I myself have two, his "New Jersey Excitement at New York Prices" (NJX@NY$) volumes.
  12:31pm
Artie:

Car Tapes!!!
  12:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

And YOU!?! Wow, I'll have to go back and listen for you!
Well I liked that, I'm not a judge of slam poetry but as an art piece, that was pretty damn great.
  12:35pm
Doug S.:

The joy of tape hiss is spreading! Go Amanda go!
  12:36pm
SteveL:

One of the best parts about taping albums was finding appropriate songs to fill the blank space at the end. Never waste a minute.
  12:36pm
Hugo:

From what I understanding, WFMU was doing cassette premiums before shifting to cds. I suspect it was one of them.
  12:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

You too can make friends with the show!
Show your support ASAP!
  12:43pm
Doug S.:

$85 more to the pledge total will zoom Amanda's pledgometer up to a healthy 75% of her goal. Make it happen and Amanda will surely sound even more joyful (is this possible?). Pledge for joy! Joy for pledge!
  12:43pm
Hugo:

I purchased a bundle of tapes in Nairobi recently, but, alas, of variable sound quality. The music is terrific, though. Vintage Kenyan and Tanzanian, mostly, Congolese style. Of course, the hiss has to be there.
  12:44pm
listener james from westwood:

stevel: a woman i once dated used to fill that space w a track that she would deliberately leave off the track listing. no idea what it would be or when it would be cut off. that right there sums up our relationship.
  12:45pm
Hugo:

George Formby?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Amanda:

Yep. I love him.
  12:48pm
listener james from westwood:

yes!!! the elements song. i knew this cold in high school!

Hey ya, Amanda. You're not on the main page. Just jumping in between meetings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm

Hi Carm! Nothing I can do about that... but thanks for letting me know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

@Hugo -- I bet Doug would like to take a crack at those Nairobi tapes!
  12:53pm

@Carm @Amanda
The link to this page IS on the main page. Right under the station's main pledgometer! It's been there since noon. No worries!

OK Doug, I'm just looking out for my DJ pals. Can never be too sure about SM Ken ....
  12:56pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Amanada & folks. Baumgartner, he's fallen in the earth, Min.
  12:56pm
Hugo:

@Amanda: I think you're on to something there ...
  12:57pm
Jack:

Amanda! I'm trying to get some chores done here, but you keep distracting me with this music. Tom Lehrer-my favorite. Why have I never heard that Elvis song before? and have you seen the movie "Oh Lucky Man"?
  12:58pm
Brian in UK:

You are on the front page now. If only I could smell.
  12:58pm
Ricardo Montalban:

GOONS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm

Hi Jack! Welcome to the playlist page... and glad to keep you company during your housework. Never seen that movie, just heard the album (tape) after I found it on the street.

Goodness, so many commenters today! Hi Ricardo M, Brian, SteveL, Artie!!!
  1:03pm

Lindsey Anderson film. He made it after If.....
Alan Price former Animal; was he a Muppet or was that Eric Burdon?
  1:04pm
ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
  1:05pm
Hugo:

And Malcolm McDowell playing the lead character ...
  1:06pm
Brian in UK:

You missed Nazarium.
  1:07pm
Brian in UK:

@Hugo loved the end of If. Think Anderson liked McDowell.
  1:09pm
Hugo:

And then there was Clockwork Orange. What did he do later on?
  1:10pm
Jack:

So, is "O Lucky Man" where Seinfeld got the "Pigman" in the hospital (with Kramer) episode?
  1:11pm
northguineahills:

That, was awesome, Amanda! (I was outside in my fire escape garden when I heard you recite the elements).

When I was an undergrad in the 90s, the clubs I would go to were either indie/brit pop and/or old (new) wave. That doesn't include my college gf dragging me to central FL raves.
  1:14pm
Hugo:

Lehrer = teacher (in German)
  1:14pm
Brian in UK:

I think he went over to America.
  1:15pm
northguineahills:

I have this Luna album on cassette! :)
  1:18pm
Ira:

Malcolm McDowell has been appearing on the Mentalist in a recurring as a cult leader for the past 2 or 3 years
  1:19pm
Brian in UK:

That sounds like a cool find Amanda. You just need Jake Thackery & The Singing Postman for a cross section of 50s/60s Brit humour. Ofcourse Scotsmen Robin Hall & Jimmy McGregor singing Fitball Crazy.
  1:28pm
Hugo:

@Brian: I have Tony Hancock on lp. He was actually the model for a very successful comedy series (Fleksnes) that ran here in the 70s.

Hugo:

Amanda won't say it, but I will: We need some pledges in support of this wonderful radio show! A pledge for Amanda also shows support for Give the Drummer Radio, which absolutely must pull its weight during fundraising time at WFMU. Of course, a pledge for Give the Drummer Radio, is support for WFMU, which took the risk to let this evolving radio/streaming experiment to begin in the first place.

Amanda - Drummer Stream - WFMU = pledge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Amanda:

I will say it too.

Please pledge, any amount! This station, this stream, all of your favorite entertainment = dependent on you!

  2:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

And of course, a big one at the end!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Amanda:

Yeah, he laughs when he says "uptighten you." How smug, to laugh at your own joke.
  2:06pm
Carmichael:

I helped some people once at a traffic accident scene. After the ambulance left, I noticed a cassette laying on the pavement, titled "Nguyen & Sons". I kept it, but have never had the heart to play it. I don't know what ever happened to the accident victims.

Wow, you guys were a regular Garfunkel & Oates!

THis, what Matt said....
  2:10pm
unbearable know it all:

Hi Amanda, great show as usual.
That Creme Fraiche thing was a late 80's comp of French euro pop. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creme-Fraiche-Various/dp/B000091EBD/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1350496809&sr=1-1 I knew someone who had it, so I went searching and found a track list for you. You don't have to thank me :D
  2:10pm
Ricardo Montalban:

This song has a distinct left channel bias. I blame the liberal media.
  2:11pm
Skirkie:

Ok, this is worth money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
Amanda:

Know-it-all, you are extremely bearable! Thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Amanda:

@Skirkie -- I was hoping people would pledge to have me play something else.
  2:15pm
unbearable know it all:

I think Amanda & Anda should reform for next years fund-raiser concert. I'd pay top dollar for that.
  2:15pm
Carmichael:

Amanda, all it needs is a little more cowbell.
  2:18pm
SteveL:

Work crazy today, but a great set of sets to keep working to. Keep it up, (Give 'er some money folks!)
  2:19pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Yeah, I liked that A&A track too. It reminded me of the early 90s and the Golden Age of the Cassette Label. Like stuff on Shrimper, some of Sebadoh's early releases, K-Records and Sub Pop, before they sold their souls to the devil.
  2:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey NGH! Well if that's the best, better digitally restore it for Amanda's Best Of comp! :)

@Ricardo: "Left of the Dial" bias.
  2:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thank you know it all!
(As for the Hoof & Mouth, I agree on an A&A live appearance!)
  2:22pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Mid eighties production really shone on cassette, since it was so bright and the drums were mixed out in front.
  2:22pm
Carmichael:

Swear to God you are in my head. I was singing this Julie Brown song AND Tom Lehrer two nights ago, and they've been stuck in my head. Now they're superglued ...
  2:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

'Cause I'm a Blonde!!! W00t!!!
  2:24pm
northguineahills:

Myself and a friend have been digitally restoring some of my friends' bands cassette only releases from the 90s.
  2:25pm

@Carm: You should play that tape! Maybe it's a message to *you* channeled from the accident victims.

  2:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

See, that wasn't so hard!
Nowadays, with the Internet this kind of stuff is all over the place. Pretty well researched clips though, before the Internet era when you had to look through reams of VHS tapes for the appropos soundbites.

ROCKY HORROR! :D
  2:33pm
northguineahills:

omgodsz, amazing!
  2:33pm

Tape cut-ups prior to computers were something else. Maybe a lost art.
