Listener comments!

  12:07pm
Cecile:

hola, all!
  12:07pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Greetings from up the river just a bit...
  12:08pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

KUDU Esther!
  12:08pm
Duane:

Hello Everyone! Happy Hump day!
  12:09pm
Cecile:

wow, this is a harsh song. I wonder if it hit home in a way with Esther.
  12:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

12:12:12 on 12/12/12!
  12:13pm
Twelve Monkeys:

Hey-o! Just had to drop by to celebrate 12/12/2012 at 12:12 pm EST (hopefully that will be the time stamp). See ya on 12/12/2112 at 12:12 am!
  12:13pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Oh, Esther's songs from her KUDU period could be brutally honest in their way...
  12:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Glad to celebrate with you, Twelve Monkeys! See ya then! :)
  12:14pm
Cecile:

Jan, so this song wasn't a fluke?
  12:16pm
Droll:

This Hiatus Kaiyote is achingly beautiful.
  12:17pm
Caryn:

Hello all! Nice to have a playlist I can actually follow.
  12:17pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Now Duane, where the hell diid i just hear this? ;)
  12:18pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Cecile, not sure what you mean, she obviously was in the song choices...?
  12:18pm
still b/p:

What A Difference A Day Makes was my intro to Esther in the 70s. Let's hope that, at least sometimes, she found reason to summon some of that outlook after tying one...or two..on.
  12:19pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

*in on the song choices
  12:20pm
Cecile:

I mean, this dark song wasn't the only dark one she did during this time.

OK, This is way better than Rihanna. I love her dance tracks, but her singing is weak.
  12:22pm
Eli:

For twooooo
  12:23pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

No, she did quite a number...
  12:24pm
pierre:

Bonsoir Duane.

  12:26pm
Duane:

Hi Pierre!
  12:26pm
Duane:

What's up Eli??
  12:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Merci pierre!
I have a thing about special dates (like "binary" dates last year--11/11/11 etc), wanted to chime in close to the exact moment! My office has been made well aware of the exact second as well! :)
  12:28pm
Eli:

Yooooooo Duane! All is well, loving the tunes this AM
  12:31pm
Caryn:

@Matt: they just had a little puff piece on the news about a girl who turned 12 today. Not only that, but she was born at 12:12. Nice!
  12:31pm
pierre:

@ Matt from Sringfield : I'm sure It was :)
  12:34pm
Cecile:

I hope the Boredoms are playing somewhere today.
  12:35pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Name dropper!
  12:36pm
Cecile:

I am wearing a Michael Kors shirtdress today. He is one of the few designers who makes nice +sized clothes.
  12:37pm
Ike:

Favorite new shoegaze-type songs of the year, maybe?

Loved that Adrian Younge track.
  12:47pm

I liked the Can outtakes box, the J5 box, hrm, this Kenny Larkin box set download from emusic.

I guess I listen to a lot of Captain Beefheart, Sly and 'fmu.
  12:48pm
Cecile:

I liked what Corduroy Mavericks sets I could find to download.
  12:48pm
Eli:

I like this.
  12:50pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey Duane! Hey Cecile, you were missed yesterday during BT's apocalyptical show. I even give you a shout out.
  12:52pm
Cecile:

aw, sorry. It was my last day of class, and I was frantically trying to camouflage some crap that got stuck on my artwork.
  12:53pm
Cecile:

who's the Satan guy? He was pretty cute.
Man, I will have to listen to that show. Looks like some PRIMO doom on there.
  12:54pm
Cheri Pi:

it was insane, I plan on listening for at least 4 more times today.
  12:55pm
Cecile:

nice.
  12:56pm
Cheri Pi:

But not during Duane's show :)
  12:56pm
Eli:

New shoegaze records should be categorized as "Nu-Shooz"
  12:57pm
Cecile:

of course not.
(during Irwin's.)
  12:57pm
Nate K:

Favorite rocker?
  12:57pm

  1:02pm
Cecile:

  1:19pm
Caryn:

@BSI: eating dinner and trying to think of any new music I've listened to this year.
  1:20pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey these Lost tapes are coming out on vinyl and their mine when they doo (insert evil laughter)
  1:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn 12:31: That's pretty cool. Good planning on the parents part; 12/12/00 may not seem like much at the time, but 12 years later!

And hey kata!
  1:22pm
kata:

that was Can ? woah. I never would have guessed ~
  1:23pm
steve:

yeah that can track was nasty, in a good way
  1:24pm
efd:

That is now my #2 favorite song with "Sausalito" in the title!
  1:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Special birthdays in Scandanavia always bring me back to the Swedish leap day birthday siblings. My brother has the same birthdate as me, but two years younger, so I've always been interested in other such examples. I couldn't find a record for the most siblings with the same birthdate, but the most interesting example I've found are the Swedish siblings all born on Feb 29--in 1960, '64 and '68!

There's a website focused on Leap Day birthdays with tons of (unverified) stories of siblings born on diff Leap Days. But the above story is Guinness verified.
  1:25pm
Eric:

Sausalito is in Marin county
  1:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

@efd: I think Joe McG's played that Ohio Express cut before, it's one of their best!
(Is Smokey & His Sister the #1 "Sausalito" song for you? :)
  1:28pm
BSI:

Cheri: True enough, Lost Tapes on vinyl. I just picked up mine last week (I had withheld the urge to get the CDs all this time, hoping vinyl would happen) ... and lo, it is gorgeous. 5 LPs on 180g vinyl, booklet, box, perpetual malcolm streetcar, etc...
  1:28pm
Caryn:

I now have an urge to go to Sausalito!

@Matt: the only Leap Year birthdays story I can remember is one I read from the Guinness Book of World Records. A family with 4 kids, all born on Leap Day, all 4 years apart.
  1:29pm
efd:

@Matt My #1 "Sausalito" song is "Sausalito Summer Nights" by Diesel.
  1:30pm
Cheri Pi:

I'm so jealous BSI I ciould spit venom. I ordered mine through my local shop, I hope it gets here soon!!!
  1:31pm
kata:

I hate to post a link on the playlist, but this is my guilty pleasure right now, heavily repeated all week:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex-aBvdwCYc&feature=player_detailpage
  1:32pm
kata:

actually not guilty, I love thai molam pop and I'm not ashamed about it!
  1:32pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

will look at it later, listening to Duane atm ;)
  1:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@efd: Listening now, that's a cool one, just your style!

Related videos: Jay Ferguson - Shakedown Cruise, Chilliwack - My Girl, Split Enz - I Got You, Nick Lowe - Cruel To Be Kind, etc... :)
  1:32pm
blake:

ooh this is a banger
  1:34pm
pierre:

Etienne !

(I would recognize his (non)voice between many others)
  1:35pm
Caryn:

I'm pathetic at saying what my fave new music of any year is, because I hardly ever buy music when it comes out. I wait years until I can get it cheap. I'm sure there's tons of new stuff I've heard on WFMU this year, but I couldn't tell you whether a track came out this year. (e.g. Is this Yan Wagner new? Can't remember, but know I want to get it some day.) Managed to buy one new album from a local band this year. That was good. What I've heard of the J5 box, the new Jimmy Cliff or the new Scott Walker album have been good, but who knows if I'll like the whole things once I get my hands on them.
  1:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: I think that's the same one, it's 3 in the years I mentioned, although it says from "Norway's Henriksen family". I also once found a website with user submitted stories, including twins/triplets and 3-4 separate siblings born on Feb 29, but those aren't verified.
  1:36pm
efd:

@Matt stop listening to that and get back to listening to Duane! :) Those related videos sound about right.
  1:37pm
steve:

i have a list of favorite 70s-80s songs Duane introduced me to this year!
  1:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@efd: Oh, I just turned Duane down to get a 1 min preview and have long since returned, full attention. After all I know a good thing, y'know! :)
  1:40pm
pierre:

One of my personal favorite of this year was (in no particular order) :

ā€” Woo
ā€” The Clean Odditties
ā€” Mind Spiders
ā€” Plus instrument
ā€” The U.V. Race
and the last but not least:
ā€” BSI's MANITOU !!

+ records (oldies) found on garage sale,
based on the good advice of BSI.
  1:40pm
kTTTTTtt:

that was a flawless transition whoaa
  1:40pm
Caryn:

I have a list of fave tracks I've listened to on youtube this year.
  1:41pm
Duane:

Caryn! I'd be interested in checkin out that youtube list!
  1:42pm
steve:

yes! never gonna leave you - among the top 70s songs i heard for the first time i heard this year
  1:43pm
BSI:

whoa, heck, thanks Pierre!
  1:43pm
Caryn:

@Duane: I can e-mail you some links.
  1:44pm
pierre:

@Duane : ooh and that "Lisa" track you played (by Prince) is also well placed on my top tracks

@BSI : thanks to you !
  1:45pm
Duane:

Do that Caryn:)
Thanx Pierre. Any more Obscure Prince things i've found to recommend that FMU listener?
  1:45pm
Cheri Pi:

My best of list is going to be pages long. Must drink beer and work on editing it tonight.
  1:49pm
pierre:

@Cheri Pi : i'd love to have a peek at that when it's done :)

@Duane : You know those more than I do, I'd trust you can reccomend them better (I might have missed something hereā€¦)
  1:50pm
kata:

@Pierre: "Neon Telephone" from Duan'es 11/7 playlist ~
  1:51pm
BSI:

If I had a list, that Can collection would be way beyond no.1. Quite often a new release is "impressive" or whatever, but THAT thing is just jaw-droppingly, mesmerizingly beyond mega. I'm not sure I've ever been so aggressively astounded by a new listen since the first time I heard Space Ritual Live, millions of years ago.
  1:52pm
kata:

loving this set today Duane ! dreamy !
  1:53pm
Carmichael:

Hiya Duane. Hey everyone.
  1:53pm
kTTTTTtt:

whoa super great set today!!!
  1:54pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Prince: so high, lisa, I can't stop this feeling I got, kiss (acoustic), Come (unreleased version), empty room, our destiny, neon telephone, old friends 4 sale, all my dreams, crystal ball (unreleased version), u got the look (prince & miles version)
  1:55pm
Duane:

Thanx Guys! Keep the lists coming..great stuff on there!
  1:56pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Oh yeah, that's all unreleased Prince
  1:56pm
pierre:

@Duane : that track you played, "the Beat", by Lou Johnsson, is pretty fantastique too.

@Kata : thanks, I'll bookmark it.
  1:57pm
Duane:

Hey Carmichael
  1:57pm
luca:

@duane: loving your set so much...
  1:58pm
Duane:

thanx luca!
  2:00pm
Ike:

I can't make a real "best of the year" list because I burn through most things so quickly. Lately I'm enjoying Toy, Chromatics, Bat for Lashes, 2:54, Morpheme, Mohn, Leyland Kirby, Andy Stott, Outer Space, Kitten... but I'll probably be sick of most of this stuff in three weeks.
  2:04pm
Duane:

This is my guilty pleasure by the way...HAHAHA
  2:05pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

No guilt, it's purdy...
  2:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great covers, Duane!
  2:12pm
Jennique:

Nice acoustics Duane.
  2:12pm
Droll:

Great MBV cover, too bad Benny Betrayer doesn't even exist according to Google or YT...
  2:13pm
Duane:

Drol: He's on youtube Droll
  2:14pm
Duane:

under Betrayer I think
  2:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

WHOA! Unreleased *Prince* demo! I knew he has a great vocal range but WOW! I truly did not see this coming!
  2:29pm
steve:

i... still cant believe this remix.
speaking of scandinavian dance music - my votes for best dance song of the year - Todd Terje - Inspector Norse / best dance album - Prins Thomas - ii
  2:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Todd kicks ass! He should do more electronica remixes, he brings that nice layered 80s touch to it.
  2:31pm
Duane:

Inspector Norse is Great Steve!
  2:37pm
steve:

best song Duane played this year which i'd heard and loved but never knew what it was - Got You Dancin by Karisma / best extended 12" Duane played that I loved on an album but didn't know had a 12 - whatever that song was with the female vocals from Snakecharmer
  2:39pm
Duane:

Thanx Steve!
  2:40pm
steve:

completely agree Matt. i think the scandinavians are some of the only ones doing justice to disco type music these days.
  2:41pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

this is great
  2:43pm
steve:

ok last one - favorite WFMU specials of the year - Duane's Walter Gibbons special and efd's Disco Indepen-Dance
  2:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@steve: Dance remixes are in their blood, I guess!
Speaking of which, ever hear of Finnish group Pepe Deluxe? They've made some great dance music, both disco and chill over the past decade.
  2:46pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

yes, King's demo album was quite nice...
  2:46pm
Denise in DC:

Carole King!
  2:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Carole always works out! With Irwin off it's good to know Duane's playing her demos! ;)
Isn't this demo for a Monkees song?
  2:46pm
Denise in DC:

I love hearing old Carole King stuff for the first time. Her voice is so unmistakable.
  2:47pm
Denise in DC:

Irwin's off?
  2:47pm
Duane:

Yeah..this Demos release was a huge 2012 highlight for me. Yeah Matt It was a Monkees demo.RIP Davy J!
  2:49pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Not from this year by any means, but the Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham live album "Moments From This Theatre" is pretty good
  2:50pm
pierre:

I'm walking in the streets right now. And I've just favorited this song on my app
  2:50pm
steve:

Matt i dont think ive heard anything overtly disco related from Pepe Deluxe... i thought they had more of a campy 60s theme?
  2:51pm
?:

REALLY cool cover
  2:54pm
steve:

omg
  2:54pm
trim hunter:

great show, huffing some hash sounds just as good
  2:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@steve: They have a lot of different styles, depending on song. There's faithful 70s soul, dance pop, disco, Latin influenced pop, and some more campy ones as well--the one that comes to mind with a sort of campy 60s theme is "Black Cadillac". But they have a lot of great stuff.
  2:57pm
kata:

Duane I'm "djing" a party at my house this weekend, I'm gonna lift a few tracks from your playlist today !
  2:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Duane!
Thanks also for these amazing selections today! Another spectacular show!

Since I think The Good Doctor doesn't have comments, have a good afternoon everybody! :)
  3:00pm
kata:

you're all invited btw ~
  3:00pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

great show as usual Duane
  3:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kata: I'll start riding my bike cross country to Portland now! ;)
