Favoriting March 25, 2013: Radio Free Culture #11: Radio Passover: Baby Got Backlash + The New Birthday Song
For the next Radio Free Culture, join Andrea and her Grandma Phyllis for Radio Passover. While the two munch matza and bitter herbs, they'll present a selection of stories about the intersections between music, technology and copyright law. First up, a story about theft in plain sight. Hear nerd king Jonathan Coulton describe how his cover of "Baby Got Back" ended up an an episode of the Fox TV show Glee unbeknownst to him. Then an update on the FMA and WFMU's attempt to dethrone "Happy Birthday to You," including the radio debut of the winning song.

Ken From Hyde Park:

If there are JM in the AM archives available, there was some presentation this morning about Passover. It aired just after 8AM, I believe.

I'm SO chuffed the archives exist, as usual, because I leave work shortly and will miss most of this show.

Great GIF of "yeah that's bitter," BTW.

@Ken - I heard that. I commented to my wife about how much effort and attention to detail seems to be involved.

Mike East:

@Ken - most interesting fact I heard was the reason they "lean" when they drink the wine....cuz Screw you Romans! Where are you now?!

Pops:

Speaking of copyright issues... ♫ "Little Boxes / On the hillside" ♫ and ♫ "It's your birthday / It's your birthday" ♫ = same tempo + notes. Copyright issues aside, there rightfully should be an attribution given to Malvina Reynolds by Blank Tapes.

No JM tomorrow morning so we get to hear DJ Marty McSorley over the air instead. I will dig that.

The intro music was Yacht's "Shangri-La (Instrumental)" available for a free download on the Free Music Archive: freemusicarchive.org...

I saw a headline today on the NBC news web site "Shocking new research shows Holocaust even worse than thought"

www.nbcnews.com...

Has she heard that news story?

Andrew Waterloo:

This story is a bit jaw dropping.

Special Man:

Recontextualising a song by making a cover of it in a different style is such a commonplace idea that it seems a bit self-righteous to be whining about someone doing another pretty similar cover.

Very entertaining RFC :)
And Andrea' grandma seems cool :)
Have a good Seder :)

So Moses goes up on Mt. Sinai, and the Lord says, "You gotta take my commandments down to my people." Moses says, "OK, how much do they cost?" The lord says, "Nothing, they're free." So Moses says, "In that case, I'll take ten!"

I've been using the first verse of They Might Be Giants' "Time" as a birthday song for years now, it's easy to sing and short.

Now Kiss From a Rose is a great birthday song.

I wonder if that story about the Martin Luther King movie was part of the inspiration for Stevie Wonder to do his Happy Birthday song in honor of Dr. King

Ha! The greeting-card business was an old Maxwell Smart cover.

So happy to receive this.....but slow to download. A note to dear Grandma Phyllis...so glad I met you and had you stay with us here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. You taught me to bake the Kugel. Going to share this with my Bible study group.
