So Darrell Waltrip's "Boogity Boogity Boogity" line is the fault of Jan and Dean. Learn something new every day.

@Doug there needs to be a Hoofipedia for such questions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm

Agreed, "Jet" would be a great Hoof & Mouth song. Especially with James's lyrics.

About the closest we can come to Hoofipedia is going to this page: wfmu.org... and searching "marathon." But that only goes back to 2008.

i gotta say, it honestly bewilders me that you guys can't get your politicos to vote for a public health care system. surely a citizen's lobby would be be a stronger voice than the private health care lobby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm

@glenn, surely not.

@glenn the problem is many citizens don't want it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Uncle Michael:

Because freedom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
pacific standard simon:

@glenn - you would think so, but the flipside of the American paradigm (anyone can get rich, be President, whatever) is that everybody thinks that they WILL, someday... and they want to protect the walled garden.
Avatar 1:12pm
glenn:

what can i say? yeah, my taxes are higher, but i don't have to worry about losing my house. i can budget for higher taxes. it's pretty hard to budget for some accident that ends up costing you a hundred grand.
Avatar 1:14pm
ndbob:

exactly glenn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
pacific standard simon:

Exactly. I have to have health insurance, now that I have a share in a house -- because another heart attack would endanger our home for all concerned.
Avatar 1:16pm
glenn:

for example, my mom died exactly 3 years ago, of cancer. she was in hospital for the last 10 days of her life. it cost us about 150$ out of pocket. 50$ for the ambulance ride, 100$ for various drugs. and we got that money back from her teacher's pension insurance. i shudder to think what it would have cost in the states.

coming in late on the health ins chat:
glenn: many us citizens have been wrongly convinced in the past 5 years that having a more robust, single-payer system is anti-american, will limit their options, will damage their quality of care, etc., the way that in wisconsin, folks who would benefit from union membership are being told it is somehow bad for them/constricts their freedom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm

glenn: my condolences on the sad anniversary. will have one next feb. 19th; my mom died this winter after a nightmarish 2012 of progressivley terminal copd. and as a sidenote, medicare helped immensely w/ the cost (8 emergency room trips/weeklong hosp stays and enough drugs to fill a car trunk), but 4 months in a rehab/nursing facility were all on us. had my dad not been a lifetime saver, they'd have been sunk. and now his financial health bar, so to speak, is that much shorter.

americans, myself included, are not good at making little changes or daily efforts to guarantee a distant payoff. we don't understand how slightly higher taxes each paycheck can ensure we don't get bankrupted in our old age when we need full room-n-board hospice, or a nursing home, or any other end-of-life massive-cost incident. this is why they want to make 401(k) plans default to opt-out vs. opt-in on signup. same logic.
