EH what day is it?
Avatar 6:53am
SID AVARICIOUS:

are all these punk bands or what?
Avatar 10:48am
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Sid -- you're mighty early. Not punk bands, no. Plastic Eye Miracle and The Bill Jones Show are sort of arty, absurdist weirdo wave with a Residents influence. Q.R. Ghazala makes experimental sound texture–oriented music, with lots of invented instruments.
Avatar 10:49am
Tony Coulter:

Oh, and all of 'em are from Ohio.
Avatar 11:49am
Carmichael:

Good morning, Tony and Sid. Looking forward to researching these bands I've never heard of. Of whom I've never heard. Heard of not ever have.

Hey there, Carmicahel and listener james, to whom I have just said hello.

What does "Buckeye" really mean anyway?

Wow, these guys are obscure! I could find one other album "Coolness" in 92, but that's about it. References Doug Martin, Doug Wofsey and a "Mr. Michael" ....
Avatar 12:19pm

"Coolness" is up next! "Mr. Michael" is Michael Gonzalez (= The Bill Jones Show)

@ fleep: Not sure I want to look.

@ Carmichael: I think he's from North Canton -- not sure where that is in relation to Cleveland

@ Sid: Yep, music to make one big neck.

Avatar 12:37pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

was captain Kirk into the Byrds as well or was it a piece of shameless cash in?
Avatar 12:39pm
Carmichael:

Shatner's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is one for the ages.
Avatar 12:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Shatner is obviously in on the joke these days -- but was he from the beginning?
Avatar 12:51pm
Carmichael:

That Transformed Man thing he did was an honest attempt to be hip, but once he became Kirk he found his groove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Rich in Washington:

If I recall correctly, Shatner's Transformed Man was done in all earnestness, supposedly after he had a life-changing, near-death experience, rendered all New Agey by the times and his titanic ego.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Rich in Washington:

I know some people who had dealings with the Shat at a Shakespearian festival, just post Trek and he was an amazingly egotistical and clueless individual, according to them.
Avatar 1:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Rich! For me, Shatner's shining moment is that Esperanto movie he did ("Incubus," I think it's called). I genuinely really like that movie.
Avatar 1:08pm
Jeremy N:

Getting a very Residents vibe from PEM, in a good way.
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Wait 'til you hear the Bill Jones tapes! They're really Residential.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
listener james from westwood:

his "mister tambourine man" was no "bilbo baggins."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Rich in Washington:

I still haven't seen Incubus. I'd love to. I liked the Shat in The Devil's Rain and The Intruder, where he plays a KKK organiser.
Avatar 1:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Bo Carter was a Mississippi bluesman -- and this track on now is a medley of some of his tunes.
Avatar 1:24pm
Tony Coulter:

I met someone who grew up as an esperanto-speaker -- they do exist! -- and she hated "Incubus" ... because Shatner's esperanto is apparently terrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Rich in Washington:

I once tried to find as much Esperanto music is possible for a show theme and most of it is boring, horrible or boring and horrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Rich in Washington:

You're right, Tony - this is very Residential.
Avatar 1:29pm

Funny, "Jad Fair Shook My Hand" came out the same year as "I Met Roky Erickson" on the LP Jad did with Daniel Johnson.
Avatar 1:33pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

any Wild Man fishcer shows planned Tony?
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

I love WMF -- but no shows planned, no -- yet, anyhow.
Avatar 1:36pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

I use to listen to loads of that Shimmy Disc label stuff, Jad Fair, Bongwater, King Missile etc. Just moved on like everyone else about 1992.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Rich in Washington:

Shimmy DIsc was indeed great, in its earliest days. I didn't like how Kramer desecrated the mixes of the Shockabilly reissues, though
Avatar 1:38pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

I am always surprised that WMF out lived Frank Zappa who first recorded him thinking he had got a wacko on record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Rich in Washington:

The WMF doc Derailroaded is worth seeing, if you haven't.
Avatar 1:42pm
Jeremy N:

Shimmy Disc got a lot of grief—all the artists complained because they didn't get paid but most of them would not have been heard much otherwise. Kramer's production sounded great on his own bands and for Galaxie 500 but for a while it seemed he was throwing gobs of reverb at everyone in town and it did get tiresome.
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

My fave Shimmy Disc releases are the Krackhouse and Fred Lane albums.
Avatar 1:43pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

oh yes Rich, Shockabilly were not my favourite band on the label, my highlights include:-
Gary and Mellissa, Mystical shit, Jesus was way too cool (King Missile), Bongwater's the power of pussy.
Avatar 1:44pm
Jeremy N:

First US releases of Boredoms and Ruins too.
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Haven't seen "Derailroaded" -- I'll have to look for it!
Avatar 1:46pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

was Kramer the fat guitarist who kept on releasing joint albums with Jad Fair or am I mixing him up with someone else?
Avatar 1:50pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

its hip to the hippy, the hop hop hippy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Rich in Washington:

Kramer's quite thin. He did something with Jad at some point but you might be thinking of someone else.
Kramer was half of Bongwater with Anne Magnuson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Rich in Washington:

Kramer also played bass - very briefly - with the Butthole Surfers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Rich in Washington:

@TOny: I wish someone would reissue those Fred Lane records.
Avatar 1:53pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

yes I remember hearing a story that Uncle Wiggly was Gibby Haynes's father?
Avatar 1:54pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Fred Lane reissues would be great, yes. Personally, though, I'm set: I've got 'em on vinyl, CD, and cassette!
Avatar 1:56pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

things to do in Ohio on a rainy day? Wahoo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Rich in Washington:

@Sid: You are correct. I think it was Gibby who reissued a record from his dad's show. He was doing the show while the BHS were active. Eugene Chadbourne (of Shockabilly) tells of going on that show with his band in a tour diary
Avatar 1:58pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

yes I remember now that guitarist was Eugene somebody?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Rich in Washington:

Gibby's dad's character was called Mr. Peppermint
Avatar 2:00pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

sorry Rich - my memory is bad - 1978-1987 seemed completely lost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
Rich in Washington:

Me too. It's frightening.
Avatar 2:01pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

did'nt Eugene Chadbourne have some records from the early 70s - like experimental jazz?
Avatar 2:02pm
northguineahills:

Speaking of Shockabilly, I remember seeing Eugene Chadbourne in '97 and he had some of his cassettes encased dirty gym socks. I stayed clear of purchasing those.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. He recorded some pretty great, Derek Bailey-inspired free jazz records in Canada and then some stuff with John Zorn, Tom Cora and others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
Rich in Washington:

Eugene's nuts but sanely so. I've been corresponding with him for a few years, tryiing to line up a show for him in Portland, but to no avail so far.
Avatar 2:04pm
SID AVARICIOUS:

does anyone know if Kramer's new label Second Shimmy has any good artists?
Avatar 2:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, NGH!
Avatar 2:09pm
northguineahills:

Word, Tony!

Some WFMU djs have been playing stuff of the revamped Shimmy, and I remember it being decent stuff, but for the life of me, I can't recall specific artists.
Avatar 2:10pm

great show Tony - I'm going off now to have my bi monthly bath, so thanks for enablinng me to see into my mind.

I was dj'ing a show (b/tn live bands) in '99 and got a bunch of crusty hardcore kids to jump over each other when I played Chadbourne's version of "Ring of Fire" (The Filipino referenced one).

Avatar 2:18pm

A Jethro Tull cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Rich in Washington:

@northguineahills: ah, yes. that's a great one. From his album with Evan Johns and the H Bombs.
His collaborations were hit or miss. I kind of liked the one with Sun City Girls but found Camper Van Chadbourne kind of unlistenable
Avatar 2:21pm
northguineahills:

Hmmm, missed his Camper Van Chadbourne, but he has so many releases, it's hard to keep up.
Avatar 2:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Sorry for messing up the track titles just now -- doing a live accuplaylist with cassettes can be a challenge!
Avatar 2:34pm

Like Sid, I must attend to my personal hygiene. Will be back at the end.
