A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning fellow Troublemakers. Love the "aht" as they say in Providence. Can't tell if this is an old portrait with the demon shawl painted over it. In any case, I would wear that demon shawl proudly if I owned one.

Yum! Love Oreos and they're vegan to boot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Parq:

But of course, guys. If that's your idea of a boon. To me, free junk food is just free junk. In general, in city life, advertising is getting so much more intrusive that I seriously expect to see a day when we are required by law to accept it on the walls of our own living rooms.
Avatar 11:28am
still b/p:

Steven Wright used to say he had a crush on his dental hygienist, so before the cleaning appointment he'd eat a whole bag of Oreos.
Avatar 11:28am
Ike:

Parq, there was a George Saunders short story, "My Flamboyant Grandson," sort of like that. Not exactly involving living rooms, though.
Avatar 11:29am
Jennique:

Been away from my desk. Did I miss DJ Icepack???
@Parq - I totally agree about ads, they are worming their way into more and more free space. Only solution is to move out of the city, methinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
Trouble:

i hear you parq! about the ads and the food. we are like mennonites at our house. i make nearly every cookie and cake. but we are gluten free, so that is a starting point for us that most people don't have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
Andrew Waterloo:

Next they'll be tethering ad balloons to farm animals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Trouble:

no jennique, he was here in food spirit only. he has 19 days of school left, best to take them as i get them...andrew somewhere in europe, i think, someone tried to introduce ads on sheep jackets and the govt stepped in and said no!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am
Andrew Waterloo:

at least they don't broadcast directly into our minds... yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
Andrew Waterloo:

Leela: Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?"
Fry: Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams, no siree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am
Andrew Waterloo:

Do they still advertise on bananas?
Avatar 11:38am
Jennique:

@Andrew - did you ever see the movie Minority Report? In it, ads address you directly via retina scan, like a Gap ad person saying, "How'd those jeans work out for Andrew Waterloo?" SCARY because it could happen.
Avatar 11:39am
still b/p:

I suppose every percentage point of increase matters to the sellers, but at this point how much can you boost Oreo consumption? Or are they just tryin' to maintain?

Remember the big ad banner in low-orbit concept? If it comes back, I hope the backers are beat back and scorched to cinders by the scorn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Andrew Waterloo:

@Jennique.. That already happens.. granted they don't use retinal scans, and the style has never been that personal. But, most web advertising is based on browser history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Trouble:

we are there now, in a sense. our entire 'democratic' lifestyle focuses on the health of business, which in turn demands that we buy the crap they sell, or else...
we are marketed to in everything we do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Andrew Waterloo:

the market share for Orea is so big you need to work in order to maintain it as well.
Avatar 11:45am
Jennique:

Well I am off again to do a bird tour in the Ramble. No ads, just birds. *aaaaah* Catch you on the archives!

In my house, we try to stay away from processed foods which is pretty easy since I only eat veggies, grains and occasionally tofu. If time allows, I try to bake bread, can veggies and make cookies for both human and canine from scratch. Even down to making my own deo, perfume, etc. But it really depends on how much time I can squirrel away on weekends. With all the other chores to do, it can be difficult.

It's a matter of saying no to consumerism that seems so prominent today. If folks only took the time to ask themselves ' What were the working conditions for the human to make this product? Did it impact the environment in a negative way? Did it involve animal testing?' With so much crap in the world, it makes sense to go to a second hand shop or upcycle..

It isn't completely hopeless to try to exercise one's regular traditional voting franchise, though. Which (ahem) anyone here who happens to be in Jersey City should be going out and doing right now. It's one of the few things I request you do even in lieu of continuing to listen to the lovely musical stylings on WFMU. I read an analysis which suggests that if there's low turnout, a certain thuggish incumbent will probably stay in office, but if people get up off their asses and into their polling places, something good could happen.
