Hiya, fleep! The "Tape Hiss" shows are never archived, just my regular freeform shows.

that's the fun part of non-archived shows. Get 'em while they're fresh!

appointment radio, the way it used to be.

DARK STAR MAN:

yeh Tony,
how is it some of the DJs on WFMU don't even have a playlist such as the reggae show on Sunday morning -(John Sarge).
D/O have a playlist but no track by track mp3/pop up play facility?
Surely John Sarge lets WFMU know what he is playing before the show?
eh it is 2013 with some easy software audio mix programs!
Avatar 12:33pm

Talking of playlists, this tape on now is a bitch to accu-playlist on the fly, but I'm-a-gonna try.

this is incredible music, Tony - and, as usual - I have never heard of this guy before.

The first time I ever did a Turkish/Anatolian music show, I received a call from a rather bemused Turkish man who gave me a pronunciation key over the phone of all the artists I'd just back-announced - not that it helped.

@ tape trader: Don't know International Sound Communication. What be that? (Greetings, btw.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Uncle Michael:

Man, there was some dynamite stuff on while I was in the car and I'll never know which tape it was.
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

It was the tape I left in the car for you -- you are now under my control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Rich in Washington:

I hope the tape wasn't left in the car too long... Lost more of them that way than I care to admit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Uncle Michael:

I miss seeing wads of unspooled cassette tape from murdered tapes gasping their last by the curbside. Once a common site, now as rare as white lung disease in a southern mill town.
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

X-raying cassettes can produce some very interesting results -- happened to an acquaintance whose bag was x-rayed at the airport.
Avatar 1:32pm
DARK STAR MAN:

hey Ike,
what's your point?
much better Tony! - like Chrome mix with Hawkwind - Alient Space ritual soundtrack!
Avatar 1:37pm
northguineahills:

I had a friend that did an art/sound exhibit based on found tape (found outdoors) in 2004, probably the tail end of when that would have been possible.
Avatar 1:38pm
DARK STAR MAN:

Ike,
think I know what you are saying -
If I am a rasta dread Jamaican DJ - I can get away with being stoned immaculate and diorganised!

Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Norwegian could *almost* be mistaken for German at times, if not for the alien vowel sounds.
Avatar 1:45pm
still b/p:

A less common sight but an interesting changing-times one came when my place of long employment was winding down and clearing out. Threw out thousands of 3/4" videotapes and also many reels of 1" tape, but the naked 1" reels were salvaged for aluminum scrap value. Great boxes full of unspooled tape...off to the dump. A swell project an artist coulda made, though exposure to all that old deteriorating tape might not be the healthiest choice.
The low-tech method we set up to let a few reels at once unspool themselves was gallery-worthy on its own.
Avatar 1:46pm
DARK STAR MAN:

its a little too dark for say Popol Vuh or Ashra Tempel but sounds close to German Spoken language!
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, NGH and still b/p! I have fond memories of seeing tangled cassette tape hanging from trees.
Avatar 1:49pm
DARK STAR MAN:

anyone out there ever record music audio onto video tape.
Tried it myself and got really good results - bass in particular was well extended!
  1:52pm
tape trader:

Go to musical ensemble in Wikipedia & type in Famlende Forsok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Uncle Michael:

DSM, right before the popularity (?!) of DAT, I traded a fair amount of Grateful Dead on VHS-Hifi.
Avatar 1:55pm
Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: Will do during the next long track. Are they an offshoot of FF?
Avatar 1:56pm
DARK STAR MAN:

yeh man!
  1:58pm
tape trader:

no
Avatar 1:59pm
DARK STAR MAN:

it seems Famlende Forsøk say The Third Ear Band
are a major influence on their music!
Avatar 2:02pm
Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: Aha ! A cassette compilation series -- haven't heard them (obviously!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Rich in Washington:

@DARK STAR MAN: I used to use a hi-fi VCR as a means to record radio programs, using the timer feature. I found the sound quality as good as - if not better - than standard cassettes.
Avatar 2:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: I take it you would recommend the "International Sound Communication" series -- I will seek it out. I discovered Famlende Forsøk via their LP, not from any comps (how I came across the LP I don't remember).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
davex:

Is church over now?
Avatar 2:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes -- just don't forget to tithe on your way out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Uncle Michael:

The tithe hat binds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
davex:

I'm digging deep for a button or two.
Avatar 2:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!
  2:23pm
tape trader:

I am not familar with this series. Nevertheless in the 70's thru CLE magazine this was a fun way to exchange music/art/ photos/etc..
Avatar 2:25pm
still b/p:

The binding discomfort is eased if you include some nice pad tithe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
davex:

Honk honk!
Avatar 2:28pm
Ike:

@Uncle M.@1:31, I recently spotted the now-rare sight of a discarded VHS tape on the curb on my block, but no audio cassettes. Although my car is full of them.
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: I discovered a lot of great music through similar series, like "Insane Music for Insane People, " "Sensationnel," "Bad Alchemy," etc. It *was* a fun way find out about music and get nice artwork at the same time!
Avatar 2:30pm
Tony Coulter:

"TO find out....."
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Ike: VHS tapes are hip in Portland. All the cool kids collect them....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
Rich in Washington:

I guess someone could produce a six hour long album on VHS, if they really wanted to.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
listener james from westwood:

been stomping out work fires with both feet but been digging the oxide, tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Rich in Washington:

As of just a few years ago, the man pseudonymously known as Dr. Zomb recorded airchecks of his own show on hi-fi VHS tape. He says he has tapes going back decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
davex:

And now the Hansa national anthem.
Avatar 2:41pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James from Westwood: Glad to hear it! Stomp away, but be careful not to sing your toes.
Avatar 2:42pm
northguineahills:

Man, this SHiT shit is fun!
Avatar 2:44pm
Tony Coulter:

I use to record FMU airchecks on to cassettes. I had years worth of them and was going to dump them before moving out west, but Ken actually asked me to give them to the station. They are currently gathering dust somewhere at HQ central.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
davex:

Ella?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
davex:

Ella!
Avatar 2:46pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: er, I meant "singe your toes" -- but singing toes are a nice idea too.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
listener james from westwood:

even my toes were singing along to that bubblegum track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Rich in Washington:

I still record airchecks of my show at home, from terrestrial radio, despite the station doing auto-archiving now. The sound quality's inferior and subject to stupid server related glitches.
Avatar 2:50pm
Tony Coulter:

@ davex: Uncredited Ella -- guess that's what they mean by scrap material!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
davex:

And Ella was still very much around at the time. I suppose she probably never had a chance to hear Famlende Forsøk though.
Avatar 2:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Maybe that was them jamming together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
davex:

Haha, she (and whatever band that was originally) had great consistency over decades.
Avatar 2:54pm
Tony Coulter:

I jest, of course. I think FF were sort of treating it like a found object and (minimally) messing with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
davex:

Another uncredited credit goes to the Chick Webb Orchestra - wasn't hard to find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm
davex:

Yes, it was surprising how minimally they changed the track. I wasn't at first even expecting Ella to come on after the long instrumental.
Avatar 2:58pm
northguineahills:

Thanks Tony, it was a fun set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
Rich in Washington:

thanks Tony, for another wonderful show! Cool stuff, completely unknown to me.
