@Carm: Major fan of Neon Indian -- the sun-drenched kind of washed out electronics, always good for a summer feel. Incidentally, I am also a WFMU-holic. I had no intention of quitting.
Avatar 4:26pm
Carmichael:

That Gal Costa sounded suspiciously like the Bobby McFerrin/Rob Wasserman tune on Duets. Or vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Scott Williams:

ewwww, really?? it's a Caetano Veloso tune, from around '75
Avatar 4:30pm
Carmichael:

I've only heard the Indian on FMU, so I don't have too much of a past with them. But my family DID enjoy Atlas Moves, which came on the FMU thumbdrive I got last year as a premium.

Why do I hafta have so much goddam work on Mondays??? I missed Frippification. The Lark Ascending for the electronic era. Will have to catch on archive. Yeah, I know how LTiA goes. But hearing it OVER THE AIRWAVES. Trust me, that didn't happen in the 70s, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm

I agree with that, G. it's special when you can enjoy it with everyone else, or in a different environment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
G:

Yes and Genesis were much bigger sellers, and had a poppy aspect to them KC programatically eschewed, so their "singles" were on some radio playlists when early/mid 70s KC never were.

Someone must have played KC on a freeform show, but not on the AOR format stations that most college-age kids listened to in the 70s... You didn't expect to hear Gentle Giant weirdness either -- but it was almost a point of pride among some in the dorms to listen to stuff you would never hear on the radio. I guess we were doing our own individual or small-group freeforming...
Avatar 5:07pm

I don't recognize the Robert Wyatt...Hmmm...
Avatar 5:15pm
steve:

G, that is so very informative, thank you
Avatar 5:17pm
Carmichael:

I was kind of prog snobby in my day. If a song played on the radio, it was too commercial. Then when a song NEVER got played, I was also mad. I recall being into Gentle Giant, Utopia, Caravan and Camel before anyone else knew who they were.
Avatar 5:25pm
Droll:

G, The 80's KC incarnation did have a pop streak, like all the other prog bands took on in the 80's. Sleepless got a 12" remix by Bob Clearmountain, but it wasn't a very good pop song so it was DOA. Genesis, Yes, and Asia were all writing real pop and trying to make chart toppers, but KC (like Rush) has a commercial curse, partially cultivated by themselves but mostly by rabid fans and unhinged haters.
Avatar 5:26pm
Stanley The Meat Balloon:

Why, hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Scott Williams:

Ahoy, Stan! Welcome to the radio
Avatar 5:28pm
Carmichael:

@Droll: and by the DJ media, trying to sell off Kansas and even Styx as *prog*. That's when I turned the knob way to the left, looking for freeform stations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
G:

Exactly, Droll, and there are prog fans who like, or tolerate, or abhor, the 80s stuff. I'm openminded; 80s 'dinosaur' prog bands were trying to survive the punk/disco/hairband asteroid strikes by finding something that could work on some commercial level.

@Carm: I 100% recognize your summary, and I knew many of us like that in the mid-later 70s...
Avatar 5:29pm
Carmichael:

Now Walter Carlos, I didn't know he drove around in this part of town. I actually like this stuff, and I just said it out loud. Eventually, I'll star this song.
Avatar 5:33pm

"The culture in Hoboken is driven by reality TV now. A lot of the bars downtown are fighting with each other for who has the most giant TVs. That's what Hoboken nightlife has become."
