A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@ Adrian in London : I haven't seen this show, but police brutality in France is surely a real thing. Many anecdotes here and there have told me so. Often in french movies about that there a moment when it happens, the most famous one being a suspect being smashed by a phone book.

I'm guessing you were talking about Beatrice Lillie. I haven't actually seen any of her films (and she didn't make very many), but I think she was mostly a legend of the stage, who chummed around with the likes of Noel Coward. (I don't think she was French--she was from Ontario and worked in the U.S. and the UK.) Even if the humor on her record doesn't hold up too well, you might enjoy reading about her very interesting career: see http://www.laynelittlepage.com/pages/the_real_beatrice_lillie.html.

My daughter loved Gregor the Overlander, first in a series

I would second Terry Brooks (though maybe that's dated now), Bradbury (timeless), T.H. White (on the edge, if he hasn't read that yet; I discovered it a bit too late), Sherlock Holmes, Camus's The Stranger (maybe). I would say let Icepack wait a few years for P.K. Dick: to really enjoy that work, one needs a well-developed paranoia complex! Boy what a nest of fantasy readers your listenership reveals . . .

My middle school magazine reading consisted of Mad, Cracked, Rolling Stone and Pro Wrestling Illustrated. These magazines had absolutely no influence in shaping my adult sensibilities whatsoever.

Someone up the list also mentioned Norse myths - I would expand that that and give a hearty second. My daughter is much better read on that front than I and it has served her very well in school (although she can be a bit impatient when obscure references to King Arthur's table are missed by everyone else in the room)

I loved the Golden Compass series, but maybe too female-centric for a boy?

One more suggestion: everyone raves about Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series . . .

12 is such an exciting time for reading - because you're not that far from 10 & Fantasy - but in one, two, three years - the changes & maturation will be dizzying. Discovery.

@JS: that's it! We had a blast reading it together.

Too much bad dog scenes. Best to the pups.

Thanks, she was very ill with heart disease. I told myself we'd put her down when she stopped wagging her tail, and she was cheerful right up until the end. She chose to die herself in our house. It's OK, we gave her a good life, although there's a big hole in our lives now.

Just tuned in. Our 14-year old son has read Cory Doctorow's "Little Brother" several times. It motivated him to read most of Doctorow's stuff.

I'll have to comb though those suggestions later. Need some better material for my 9 year-old who is stubborn about taking recommendations.

DJ Icepack might enjoy Stephen Donaldson's "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant," two sets of trilogies. Also don't forget Asimov's "Foundation" series

So, sorry just tuning in.. couldn't help but recommend: Neuromancer by William Gibson and Ender's Game by Oson Scott Card as good cyber punk and sci fi. For brain candy, go in for a book by Christopher Moore, like Lust Lizards of Melancholy Cove. All have some adult themes, but hey... what doesn't these days?
