A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Many years ago well actually it was Mir than 30 I had over 100 45's. Mistake I made was storing them in the basement. 1986 hurricane Andrew flossed my basement and ruined them

doca:

Hi, Trouble, thanks for the palace, it's been years I didn't listened to this particular song <3
  9:20am
Jack:

I'm also noticing more presence, immediacy of the 45's, more than the LP's or CD's you usually hear (not to mention MP3's). In the audiophile world, this is a known phenomenon-if you are willing to spend the bucks, LP's remastered and pressed at 45 RPM are available, and said to kill even the audiophile 33 RPM pressings...just sayin'...

...7"s have that quality of being more a >POP< object - somewhat more ephemeral & even disposable - & suitable for multiple play & wearing out....
- We discussed it on Therese's board - you have more 'data' going by the stylus @ higher speeds - & the grooves are farther apart...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am
Trouble:

jack, i hear you, but is the same sound improvement heard in 7" records played at 33? i have already played some 33's today

some of my most memorable 7" records came in cereal boxes, little cardboard squares.
  9:33am
Jack:

Wouldn't expect 7" 33's to sound any better...as I understand it, the 2 factors involved in fidelity on vinyl that relate here are the speed (45, natch), and the space between grooves, so a 45 RPM 12 inch doesn't have to crowd the grooves, especially the inner grooves as much. Breaking out a 33 RPM album onto 2 slabs of vinyl, thus helps crowded grooves (my true geek is coming out...)
  9:35am
Jack:

On second thought, spacing of grooves probably is still better on a 7" 33 RPM with 1 song than it would be on a 12" LP with 6 songs or so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...less space as you get to Center - hm...

Howdy all! Have any of you ever run into the derisive attitude that 45/7" are too cool for school? I've run into it a few times and really don't understand that attitude. 7's are there to buy just like any other recorded media.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am

@Tim, I can understand being turned off by the value proposition, but 7's are too fun not to love. When I didn't have a record player it was the 7's that really made feel left out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am

- well - the irony is w/ digital files - the 'Single' is reemergent...Jim Morrison made the point that the Album had supplanted the painting or novel as the primary format for Art Statements - the real Concept behind 'Concept Albums' really being that the LP was what it was - a single long Piece in a notable 12" Circling of a Square...
