Favoriting December 11, 2013: Annual show dedicated to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack. Plus, a special salute.

Back in October 2006 I dedicated my first show on the regular WFMU weekly schedule to Jim McIntyre, a/k/a Jimmy Mack, who was one of my best friends in high school. He was also the person who turned me on to a TON of new music that was coming out at the time -- Cheap Trick, The Dictators, The Ramones, The Stranglers, Ultravox, and Television are just a few of the bands that I first heard of because of my friendship with Jimmy. Imagine being in your teens and having a friend turn you on to just ONE of those bands. Now increase that impact tenfold, or more, and you start to get an idea of the importance of Jimmy's friendship. OK, not every band he turned me on to was super-cool -- I definitely remember him giving me the first couple of Foreigner albums -- but stilll, Jimmy had a great ear for cool music that wasn't yet -- or, sometimes, ever -- part of the mainstream.

Fortunately for me -- and for you -- Jimmy's excitement, enthusiasm and passion for discovering and sharing new music was matched by his generosity. Nearly every time I saw him he'd present me with a bag of extra (or rejected) promo records from his job at WBCN, the leading rock radio station in Boston, where he started working while we were still in high school.

In the summer of 1985, Jimmy learned he had AIDS. A year later he passed away, at the age of 25. As you can see from the obit at left, he was as generous with his time as he was with records. Regrettably I had lost contact with Jimmy by this time, and didn't hear of his passing until a few years later.

In the fall of 2006 I dedicated my first show on the regular WFMU schedule to Jimmy. I wanted to acknowledge his impact on my life, and especially on my own musical tastes. Since then I've dedicated one of the first shows of the WFMU fall schedule to him, since his influence is never too far from what you hear me play on my show. Thanks for taking a moment to read about him, and thanks for listening to WFMU.

The Sweet threw me off for second. Will miss Scharpling, but he turned me on to WFMU. There are a lot of fans in Chicago since we don't have a free form station quite like this (CHIRP is trying to get something similar started). My support will continue. Also, that's a sweet tribute to your friend, Jim.

...relish that transition from the last program, whatever the intention - great Sweet track; someone should do a block of Sweet & Slade & a bit of good early Queen & other things to go w/ them you would know that I don't...
- WBCN Boston: grew up in smalltown New Hampshire trying to pull it in on a battery-operated radio plugged into bigger speakers - which tended to work better @ night...

Joining the broadcast a little late today. Happy birthday, Holly! Down here they write today's date as 11/12/13, which is kinda cool.

Danne D:

(Re MTV some of us didn't mind seeing Nina Blackwood as well y'know - you could like 'em both. Just sayin' :)

And Jake Gould wins the day by posting the first MTV Basement Tapes winning video (and a song that later would fall into the category of songs like Living in a Box where the Band, Album, and Song are all titled the same).

Actually I don't think that Dog Police won the whole thing - it just won it's week, but was easily the only Basement Tapes song I ever remembered.
