Hi Tony!
Just stumbled in.
Vox Populi is the only familiar name here.
I remember I had the one or the other track on some Swiss or Belgian compilation.
Seeing their story going back as far as 1982 is new to me.

For those who don't know it yet, here the page of my old pal Don Campau, mostly dedicated to the cassette-culture (Cassette-Underground Archive): livingarchive.doncampau.com

talking about great alternative radio shows there a really good WFMU Nat Roe show from (Playlist) June 12, 2010 in the archives where he plays nothing but Four hours straight of Bizarro German Musik, mostly from the early 80s.
The Acid Dreams , Brain Ink, Human Puppets etc.
I seriously recommend it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm

Brain Ink were Dutch with a British mastermind!

... ah Tony, I see you are contributung as an author and veteran CJ!

I have my little "early experience" article there:

Ah nice -- I will be sure to read your piece after the show. Thanks!
Avatar 12:56pm
Tony Coulter:

By the by, that capstan noise you're hearing on side B of this tape is actually *in* the recording -- probably developed some point during their dubbing of the release. One of the perils of no-budget self-releases, I guess.
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey! Who invited Herman's Hermits!?! (Damn autofill)
Avatar 1:01pm
northguineahills:

I like Nat Roe's selection of music, but he uses the same darn filter effects when mixing, which sometimes gets old to me after a few years....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Guido (Cologne):

Pretty sophisticated stuff!
we should never forget the technical conditions!
No samplers, just tapes, maybe a lot of self build electronics.
A lot of work to do this!!!
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

True, for sure. And, somehow, when things are harder to do, they often turn out better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Rich in Washington:

Mr. Fab at Music for Maniacs made to proposition that Bandcamp is the new Cassette Revolution.
I must say I have probably purchased more music on Bandcamp than any other electronic means. The sliding scale on most offerenings is really enticing although I often feel compelled to give more than the suggested price.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
listener james from westwood:

already really liking the trio. evidently you've got my frequency tagged this tape hiss!

The new Cassette Revolution, perhaps, but without all the beautiful, highly individual packaging.

The above was aimed at Rich, natch.

Ah, World Music...
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Funny you mention that. One of my oldest record-store tricks is looking in the world music sections. All sorts of stuff gets stuck there, just because stores don't know how else to file it.

My response to "world music": What? Verdi wasn't of the world?

Same experience, even at record stores that should know better: the WM section serves as the miscellany drop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm

I often get a lough when our Cologne Carnival Schlager Singers get filed under "Word" at AMG. Allright, Cologne is part of the world, why not?

At least one store in Portland has a "I don't know where to put this" section that's both an honest assessment of what's to be found there and worth looking through at least once a month.

blows my mind that this music was burbling out there somewhere while i was stuck marinating in whitney houston or other pop slop in the nyc radio market. would be 6 more years before i was turned on to wfmu....

One could make a flow chart that would get from Whitney Houston to this. Starting with the fact that Whitney covered a Soft Machine track (Hugh Hopper's "Memories").
Avatar 2:11pm

the first thing i do when i am at an indian restaurant is to put my phone in stasis. nothing gets between me and indian food.
Avatar 2:19pm

Appropriately, the next track is called "Indian Holiday."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Rich in Washington:

I hear you James. I have this thing about ever getting on them in restaurants if I am with anyone anyway. My wife and I see couples who hardly talk to one another or even whole families diddling with their phones instead of talking.
  2:21pm
Dean:

I'll bite, Rich. Whose deaths were the occasions of the first two?
Avatar 2:22pm
Tony Coulter:

I'll guess one of them: Ernest Borgnine.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
listener james from westwood:

that's tragic, esp. considering how little together time some families have aside from meals, if those.
i watched a high school kid walk straight by an attractive peer with his eyes fixed only on his cell. at that rate the species will peter out in 30 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Tony: NO! But I passed up the opportunity to meet Ernest just before he died. A friend was sort of responsible for his portland appearance at the screening of Marty.
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

er -- *this* is "Indian Holiday" -- my goof.
Avatar 2:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Plus, I think they have the "other" Indians in mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Dean: One was Lady Di. I believe it was one of our first dates. The waitress deemed it appropriate to go to each table and in a hushed tone, tell all of us that she had been killed.
The other was more recent. While out buying wine after our date, a clueless clerk hopped up to us and in an excited voice asked "did you hear about the famous actor who died?" . I was thinking it was a setup for a joke, so I repeated it back to him as such.
He told me his name and I didn't recognize it. He said he was in the Fast and Furious series and I told him I have never seen any of them, had no plans to ever see any of them and then he thought I was joking.
My wife and I were just sad that there are so many stupid people in the world.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm

Celebrity death news is still preferable to sports talk -- for me anyhow. (Go away Seahawks.)
Avatar 2:39pm
Tony Coulter:

(Please ignore my previous remark, sports fans.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Rich in Washington:

The Seahawks victory just gave my neighbors one more reason to shoot their guns in the air all night.
  2:45pm
Dean:

Rich: Diana went before cellphones, never mind smartphones, achieved prevalence. At least there's that, the personal touch from the waitress. But I can't fathom the restaurant's sense that keeping its customers apprised of the news, short of a real, proximate emergency, was its obligation.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
listener james from westwood:

a greek joint up the street form me has tvs tuned to the local news channel on every wall. they're silent, fortunately, but you can still read the crawl. i guess i can be happy they're not on fox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
Rich in Washington:

I can tell you, it absolutely ruined our date. It was one of our first, shortly before becoming engaged. Not that we cared that much but my wife was rather fond of Diana and somewhat intrigued by the British Royalty thing.
But it was just, why the fuck go and tell people? It was stupid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
Guido (Cologne):

Top-Notch tape stuff in this show I must say!
I think Remo Tobs are my favourite for today.
Avatar 2:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Guido! The Nine Tobs LP is really good too. (It's called "Gruffy Splurge.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Rich in Washington:

Dean: There were indeed cellphones in '97, just nowhere near as prevalent in recent years. We just didn't have any yet, my wife and I. We begrudgingly bought them when our children became of driving age, etc...
