There is no reason the police would force him to stay in the same room as a dead body. They can't detain somebody that long without making an arrest. If they arrested him, he'd be in prison or the back of a police car.
What plausible explanation is there for *needing* him there? As he implied, he's not an expert like a medical examiner.
