Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from March 14, 2014 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

but I think you should do a whole singer-songwriter show, Bryce, to avoid typecasting yourself.

Stan Kenton ... Wow. Now, just some Graettinger and I can die happily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
tim from champaign:

This Stan Kenton is interesting. Why did I think he was a stuff shirt?
Avatar 1:15pm
Bryce:

tim, it wasn't stan kenton's music, but a guy named Robert Graettinger. brilliant, brilliant composer, died tragically young.

stan kenton really really went out on a limb though, going around playing graettinger's music for a couple years. if it weren't for him, he probably wouldn't have been able to write it all....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
tim from champaign:

Oh wow, thanks Bryce!
Avatar 1:17pm

there was a reissue CD a few years ago that collected pretty much all of his stuff ever recorded. if you ever come across it, it's totally amaaaazing. :)

@Columbus@12:40, hey dammit, my neighborhood resembles that remark. I love listening to FMU on boomboxes & portables. It's great. Also NJ has more trees than you prob. think. That said, crime is going up in my area. I should really GTFO.

tim from champaign:

Speaking of gongs and bowing, I saw the Nakatani Gong Orchestra last night. It was fantastic. Nakatani performed a solo percussion set prior to the orchestra. I'd put him up there with Paal Nilsen Love and Han Bennink as far as incredibly creative players go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
DCE:

how'd Mrs tfc enjoy playing in the orchestra?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
tim from champaign:

She had a great time, DCE. She played one of the smaller gongs and stood in front of the biggest gong. She loved hearing all the subtle sounds coming off the big gong. She also said Nakatani was a lot of fun to work with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
DCE:

she figured out the hand signals OK, then...looked kinda wildly confusing to me!
Avatar 1:53pm
Carmichael:

I didn't realize Graettinger actually wrote that piece. Kenton was a maverick who rubbed purists the wrong way for years.

Hi, don't listen to your show often. Great stuff today, thanks! BTW City of Glass really is amazing esp. when you think about when it was composed. Cornel Taranu was an ear opener...very Varese-ish, I'll have to look for that.

Avatar 2:50pm

thanks, brian, so glad you were around today!

yeah, early 50s. i don't think anyone in the jazz world was terribly taken with graettinger's music when kenton was carting it around. took 40 years....
