I wonder how some of these singers are unknown. Was the music found on an unlabeled cassette?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Gary:

Good question, Dave. It could be that they weren't able to find someone to read whatever language it was in. Or that they recorded it from a source they didn't bring back with them. It would be great to go through each album with each of the compilers/editors (named in the playlist, btw)

I'm late to the party. Is this a Sublime Frequencies special?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
davex:

It would really be a shame if they just didn't have someone to read the languages, which shouldn't be too hard (and some scripts are not that hard to figure out with a little practice). In any case, I'm intrigued...

Speaking of soup ... @Jill - thank you for cioppino recipe (via Gary)!
Here's a trick I use to make any seafood soup 10x better - every once in a while steam some mussels in some sory of winey, garlicky bath - and - temporary restraint is called for here - strain out the mussels, shell, chill and eat them w salad for lunch or a snack. Meanwhile reduce the brothy goodness as far as you're willing to take it, and freeze. Use these power packs wisely. You probably already hoard your shrimp shells...

It's illegal to play it in Brazil, I seem to recall reading in the liner notes

actually it isn't, as the border with usual funk is very thin. but it was discouraged in radio because it defended drug traffic organizations. most of this music still sells on the street, on pirate compilations, so the radio is no big issue

@Gary - That Frank O'Hara poem is one of my favorites!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Gary:

He's hands down my favorite poet, I think of any era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
pacific standard simon:

I'm inclined to agree. There are other poets that knock me out, but O'Hara was by far the friendliest to the reader.

when I went to dj in Monterrey Mexico, 7 years back, the Mexican dj before me was playing nothing but baile funk. Luckily, me and my dj partner had enough baile funk to transition the dancing crowd to whatever we were playing later.

i've read wislawa szymborska recently and liked a lot. her oetry the same feel of exceptional day to day events and things than o'hara. just as a suggestion...

Any idea who's playing guitar on this Phương Dung track? It rubs my love of The Magic Band the right way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Gary:

No idea, Simon. Might be in the liner notes of the album, but it's an LP only at this point and I don't have it :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
pacific standard simon:

Will look into it, @doca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm

Probably just a footnote, anyway, Gary. I know you're lucky with these things if you have anything more than a group picture.

I'm busy washing dishes, so I'd thought I'd say souper fractals of beautiful vibrations, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Gary:

I had one other set after this, but I just don't think I should do it -- it's a 9 minute track, which will mean it won't be captured in the archives ...

I'm being called to dinner, so I'll just say thanks, Gary, for presenting all this wonderful stuff on GTDR and WFMU!

They need to keep this stuff in print! You see that pile in the picture? You know how many hundreds or maybe thousands that would be worth? They have at least a 100 releases, and 75% of it is out of print. So, you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna put all these files (I have most of that pile) up on my blog to download. I love the label, but I've always been pissed at the rarity.
