When Iggy sold "Lust for Life" to be used in that cruise ship commercial, it got me to thinking. What will be the last song ever to be used in a commercial? Something by GG? Boyd Rice? Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black? Nope, I said to myself, everyone and every goddam thing has its price. Reliving an old sad.

Doug, I like the song & have no care or concern about an artist selling their work to make money. Didn’t people give Joey Ramone crap for owning stocks? What are these guys supposed to do? Eat fan mail?
Avatar 1:10pm

@Doug Commercialization is a form of social acceptance, it means the culture has embraced a song or an artist. That's how I rationalize it.

I don't begrudge anyone doing anything with their own creations. I do see the great devouring engine of commodification reducing everything to worthless dust, however. I blame no one in particular. Not even "human nature." But I still think it sucks.

Andrew Waterloo:

There is a deep sentiment that is difficult to explain fully. There is a basic feeling that when you take something that's shared and loved by a small community, and make it massively popular, that original small community loses the ability to define what it means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm only bothered by selling a song for a commercial endorsement if it represents an act of blatant hypocrisy.

Doug Schulkind:

@fleep
WFMU does a brilliant job at minimizing the corrupting influence of the marketplace on what it creates. But it is hardly immune. I created the "old bin" in WFMU's library for just this purpose. The "new bin," a central location where all recordings new to the station's library are placed, is — as welcome a tool as it is for introducing DJs to the new arrivals — still a commercial mechanism for product placement. Labels send in new product and it gets primo positioning in front of the DJs eyes. This is not an evil thing by any stretch, but for ONLY new product to get this special placement seemed, to me, to be a corruption. So I thought up the "old bin" where records already in the WFMU stacks could also receive prominent placement in the library, simply because a DJ wanted to share it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Jeff Golick:

I'd just to state for the record that I am not above being corrupted. For the right price, of course.

And by right price, I mean access to the 'FMU library, new and old.

Also, please help my memory: does anyone else out there remember a Levi's (or perhaps another jeans co.) commercial from the mid- to late-1980s that had a Mission of Burma instrumental under it? "Tremolo," maybe? Gah.
  1:31pm
JakeGould:

Doug, that’s the kind of thinking that makes me like WFMU. But I really can’t deal with some of those new 78s that Mac plays on the antique phonograph show. He’s clearly being bribed with new fashioned candy & pictures of flappers baring ankles!
  1:32pm
Sam:

I also love the Springfield Squidport episode, where the waterfront gets all gentrified. The yuppy guy walks into Moe's and says "Hey, this isn't faux dive - this is a dive!" That still rings as true as ever.
