Likewise, UM. Friends of mine had to give up a Jack Russell earlier this year, and it broke my heart I couldn't take him here. Apt. complex wants $500 nonrefundable & $50/month for dogs. (He was placed w/ a family friend who has other JRs.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Amanda:

That's right, I make gifs now. What of it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Uncle Michael:

I would be so very lucky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm sorry to hear that, ljfw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Amanda:

Oh, UM, I know he'd never bite you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Amanda:

LJFW, you are probably better off! JRs are cute but they are pretty annoying to keep.

Lincoln (home on her spring break) thinks that the tan beast is possibly a guinea pig and not a pup.

Argghhhhh sorry about the crunchy CD.

We're all Amanda's guinea pigs.

Sounds good Amanda! Glad I'm finally able to listen to some of your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
listener james from westwood:

"Starry Eyes" is unfuckwithable, static or no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
listener james from westwood:

The more I heard the Monkees on FMU, the broader my conception of them became. As a young child I hated, hated, hated the show. Glad to have outgrown that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Uncle Michael:

(can you hear me from over in this corner?)
  12:42pm
@BuckyKatt:

Sorry to have missed most of the opening set... I still have my old Ohio Express, 1910 Fruitgum Co., etc. 45s. Fun, infectious, catchy bubblegum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm a little conflicted about the Monkees. I like the records a lot but I don't think I like them very much because of the guys that showed up to the studio to lay down the more-or-less competent vocals. And yes, Nesmith's stuff is a breed apart but however good you think they are...they never would have had a broad reach without the Monkees' brand. The Monkees weren't as good as say...the Grass Roots. But they had a weekly 30-minute tv commercial. The records are great...but I don't think they're great because of the Monkees.

Andrew Sandoval will never speak to me again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm

Foreign service: What a singular topic for a song!

Can we hear Gong Fries Plantains and Beans by Foghat?

Yay BuckyKatt!!! That stuff is just gold. I hope you enjoy the archive, if you choose to go there...?

Amanda-- yes, I'll check out the archive! I work at home, so I am the master of my musical playlist. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Nate K:

Oh, hell yeah, AC doing Dan Penn. A Classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Amanda:

Back to the Monkees for just a second -- for me some of the appeal is the saga of it, that it was such a weird story of the 60s and of pop music. But I do love love love the records. The TV show enhances the records for me, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Doug Schulkind:

This set is seriously fucking fantastic, Amanda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Nate K:

Amanda you should check out the Boyce & Hart doc. Some really interesting Monkees-related info. Also, I agree with Doug re: this set. I need to go to lunch, but I don't want to leave in the middle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Uncle Michael:

One of the problems I have with the Monkees is Davy. I think he was a hack. I'd love to hear a demo of a Davy song that's not superior to the Monkees' release. Mickey, I like better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Amanda:

(in the voice of Bender) Shut up, Doug, I know it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Dominick:

There's another (stripped down) studio version done on the 1970 Poppy LP "Townes Van Zandt"
Avatar 1:12pm

of course they're crazy. it was impossible to know kevin ayers and be normal.
Avatar 1:16pm
ndbob:

I've always been a big Monkees fan - from the beginning - first LP I bought was More of the Monkees -I'll admit to being a little embarrased
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Amanda:

I *do* want to see the Boyce & Hart doc, and I also want to see the surviving Monkees when they come to town (this summer, I think?)

The spinning disc on Homer's head was probably my favorite gag in this week's. I was really pleased with the episode.

I had that Homer widget!

Avatar 1:32pm

Early 1980s and 1990s print comics are another kind of pretzelly time twist altogether. Still laughy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm

Now THAT stuff is gold. I LOVE Life In Hell. I think Childhood Is Hell is my favorite
Avatar 1:33pm

For a while I had the Apple brochure Matt Groening did in the Life in Hell style. Scans available online, but still, miss that chunk of my college years.

Super DJ Amanda in effect
live and direct!
true Davy Jones story
about 5 years ago Carroll Music was hired to do sound for
the Davy Jones band at a private party in NYC
Davy was a total pro, very easy to work with
and very effective frontperson
the crowd went nuts
after the party Davy made an extra effort
to seek out myself and the monitor mixer
and thank us profusely
before leaving with his slightly taller
very beautiful blond wife
bonus WFMU fact
the monitor mixer was Glenn Luttman
excellent volunteer audio engineer
Avatar 1:41pm
V Priceless:

Great Association track from the fab 'Birthday' record!
Avatar 1:45pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Where is a decent place to pick up Life In Hell stuff? Amazon is showing prices in the $60-$100 range... Unless they normally cost that much... Never read it, always wanted to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Amanda:

Big hellos to you latecomers jayc, VP, glenn, and johnk! If I forgot anyone, don't worry, it's just my retardedness.

johnk77, what a cool story. Sure it sounded ace if Glenn was engineering!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
listener james from westwood:

Are those collections out of print? If they're not, that price sounds waaaay high. The books I bought were individually much cheaper, even years ago, as were the boxed sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Amanda:

No idea how much those deals should cost. I have had my copies since I was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
listener james from westwood:

Dan B: How about eBay. Maybe snag the lot on the cheap? Also the Big Book of Hell might combine a few of the books.
Avatar 1:50pm

Second hand book stores. The funny section.
Avatar 1:51pm

Second hand prices. No kidding.
