Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
joe:

My theory is
There are those who want to make music and those that want to make it in music. The two have nothing to do with one another and are in no way mutually exclusive. Anybody can do the first one because it is completely based on personal satisfaction. The second can have many levels of achievement but it has to be understood that in some way even in the smallest sense you are at the mercy of your "audience/critic" in turn making what you create only part of the over all package.

I wore out one copy of TPRG and put a ton of miles on a second copy too. It was my favorite thing to read when I had some, oh, let's call it down time. For many years I carried around in my wallet a list of albums I thought I'd like based on TP reviews, and I'd pull it out whenever I was in a used record/tape store. I'll never forget the thrill of finding the Lightning Seeds' "Jollification" in a little shop in Lansing, Michigan-- and it's still one of my favorites. TP also led me to another of my all-time bands, E*I*E*I*O (and its offshoot Semi-Twang). Thanks, Ira!
  9:52pm
P-90:

@ joe: yeah, like most artists, someone like Lorde is basically a control freak, and they always have to learn this lesson that their reception by their own audience and especially by the press is just NOT something they have complete control over, it's a paradox they've got to learn to live with

Hey, Ira, I met you at Andy Shernoff's first solo gig a few years ago at a tiny club in the East Village. For the record, you published my gushing 15-year-old groupie-girl missive re: The New York Dolls in your 4th issue. At the time, I picked up TOTP at a place in Poughkeepsie called The Record Lover, owned by a lovely man, Gary Danna, who was a friend of mine. I used to help him out in the store sometimes on weekends when I was visiting upstate. Thanks for the great mag, Ira, and Happy 40th! PS: So cool that Dwight Twilley is playing for you this weekend. I am glad to hear he's still at it! I only know his first two records, but we loved them!
