@ DJ Dave: Really fine playlist! Enjoying dutifully

@ pss: got trapped in an unexpected downpour of Biblical proportions myself, Friday night here in NY.
Otherwise, how are you and the missus?

@P-90: Thank you. I almost got caught in that downpour here on Friday.

I think this might be the year I finally own a turntable again. Someone pointed this:

out to me.

HollyT:

This is nice. New-ish? Sounds v influenced by mid-70s Italian soundtrack/lounge stuff--Piccioni, Morricone, etc
  11:07pm
P-90:

@ pss: You should reconsider coming to town for the Record Fair. It's always a blast. And re: forensic cop shows: there are so many now, it's unbelievable, why are they this popular? A number of former classmates who studied physical anthropology with me are now CIS/NCIS, and we're often laughing at how UNlike any reality those shows are, all of them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
pacific standard simon:

I don't get it, either. Also, the popularity of shows about abrasive "genius" detectives (House counts, too.)
Avatar 11:14pm

Greetings! Nice sounds.

@Holly: I missed what track you were referring to? Was it the Woo? If so, it's a new release of previously unreleased stuff.

Evening, Ike.

Yep.
Avatar 11:16pm

@Holly: Woo were excellent. After that was Malka Spigel, also very good. Formerly of the band Minimal Compact, which you would like.
  11:16pm
HollyT:

Forget cop procedurals and genius detectives. The best show on TV right now is The Americans. :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

Or both?
Avatar 11:37pm

Sure feels like it, PSS.
  11:38pm
P-90:

@ Ike: if it feels like a cold, it probably is, there are a number of winter cold bugs lingering unusually late in the year, claiming new victims

@ Holly T: I 've heard that The Americans is well-done and very imaginative, I know that one of the creators was involved in this kind of intelligence himself.

re: last week's talk on songs vs pieces.
I'm learning a piece by Mendessohn and it's part of the "Songs without words" series. So it's a song and a piece?

Confusing!

Remember that series of Scriabin records that had a naked lady with colored blobs projected on her body on the cover? I kept checking those out of the library and forgetting to listen to the record.

I think that series of jackets actually won some kind of design award.
  11:49pm
P-90:

@ pss: ...and apparently so mesmerizing that one never gets past them to the actual disk
Avatar 11:50pm
Ike:

Agreed that The Americans is excellent. Also, Fargo (The Series) started slow, but it's really getting good, despite seeming like a terrible idea for a show. Another terrible idea for a show that turned great is Hannibal, which has a great avant score and cinematography.
  11:52pm
P-90:

And didn't John Cage or someone actually compose a piece titled "Naked Lady with Colored Blobs Projected on Her Body"? --or was it a "song" maybe?
Avatar 11:54pm
Ike:

Hannibal without people: vimeo.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
pacific standard simon:

No, but The Cramps recorded "Naked Lady Falling Down The Stairs"...
  11:56pm
P-90:

@ Ike: Hmm. I have so little time for tv lately that I didn't know that the Hannibal show was still on, it sounded like it was going to flop from the initila reactions. And I didn't know there was a Fargo: The Series. Any one seen Bates Motel yet?
  Swag For Life Member 11:57pm

Droll:

Howdy DM! I was out of town and missed the show Sunday, but like 12539 says, it's never too late to lurk. Commenting on archives is like lurking, except the DJ can still see you. EFD and I agreed listening to archives is like listening to a mix tape with someone talking in between songs, but it's so nice to catch a show you missed it's a small hurdle to cross.

The Reverend Toad-Eater bass solo was ambitious but fell flat for me. I felt his tone caused muddy chording, and his right hand technique was WAY too heavy-handed. Solo bass needs even clearer articulation than ensemble bass playing, there's a bunch of stuff happening here and most of what I hear is right-hand string noise... but maybe that's his point. I'm harsh on solo bass -- but that's because I believe basses should be used 3-5 at a time!

The Pyramid Vritra was also bass-centric. I like electronic effects gadgets on bass. Yes, I have lots of opinions about bass, so people assume I don't like it, but in fact the opposite is true. I think it's very difficult for non-musicians to understand how musicians listen to music because all the additional layers. If you don't play bass, you're not going to have the muscle memory that's so completely intertwined with the sounds, and although everyone hears the notes, non-musicians miss the "playing along" part. The "inner logic" of a song is physically tied to the basic limitations of which notes you can reach from the current fingering position. Musicians notice when the inner workings are "different" than what they achieve with their hands. Anyhow, I like bass.

Ahhh, Tull... Good on you, but unfair bashing the 80's era disc with just "you don't want to hear that one". An Uber-Prog friend of mine considers Passion Play to be Tull's greatest work! I'd love to hear you two go at it while I drink beer and laugh at you both!

Definitely enjoyed the piano sonata. During my road trip I listened to some NPR classical music affiliate doing its fundraiser and they were pimping their CD premium which was all pretty mainstream/pedestrian. There's about 300 years from the baroque to the romantic period but they're still playing the same 20 Mozart songs! No matter, the huge dynamic range of classical music makes car listening futile anyhow.

Your show seems even shorter when it's during the day than when it's during dinner. I don't care if you didn't play the closing CD you meant to play, I like the piano stuff! And bass! And drums! I like lots of instruments!
