@Cklequ: Taylor Swift explaining what a bodega is was added in, thanks to a clip Doug sent along a week or so ago

@Hyde ... that makes, dare I say it, Four Eyes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

I was voting for at least one of those one eyed cats. Even though i had a two eyed cat of my own in the running.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Gary:

Anyone know where Miss Smodern hails from? This cut was taken off a popular pan-African album of the 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
davex:

Thanks, Gary! I'd be interested to know how it all works, what the boundaries are, etc.
  7:15pm
MrFab:

yo Gary! Way stoked for today's show, I luuurvs African music. Never heard of Miss Smodern before, but this track is pure South African mbaqanga.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Gary:

Mr. Fab! That sounds plausible, yeah -- if I had been forced to guess, I would've probably gone with SA
  7:22pm
Doug Schulkind:

Yup, South Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Gary:

Thanks, Doug -- and, speaking of SA ... :)

Great African music tonight....my favorite!

@Dave ... found it in DC a year or two ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
davex:

Where do you find these places, Gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Gary:

@Dave, that place I didn't find, I was actually led to by a guy who saw me waiting sadly outside of Nahomi. He asked if I was looking for Ethiopian music. I said I was. And he said to follow him across the street ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm

I missed most of those African Pearls recs on Reneshoua. There was so much good stuff on that blog last time around I gave short shrift to the Africa and funk records. But hell, I'm still trying to get through everything else I got there and they've been gone for months.

Avatar 9:08pm
hyde:

heh, that is me exactly with Reneshoua. I was grabbing so much old timey American and blues stuff and anything they'd put up that came out between 1900-1950 that I just couldn't face all of the funk and African and Jamaican stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Doug Schulkind:

The first and last book on Fela you need to reat is Carlos Moore's "Fela Fela This Bitch of a Life." I have a copy published by Allison & Busby, London. Here's a review on JSTOR: www.jstor.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Gary:

THANK YOU, Doug! Will get right on that after the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
That book was actually published before Fela died, so it's not a sweeping epic bio. It's more an "as told to" insider account of the life and times. Carlos Moore was a close confidant of Fela's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Gary:

That sounds thrilling, though -- maybe more so than an after-the-fact overview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

The original publication was in French and carried the title Fela, Fela — Cette Putain De Vie (Fela, Fela — This Motherfucking Life)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Doug Schulkind:

HOLY CRAP! Bodega Pop Live is just 33¢ short of the goal. And because of that, it's showing as 99%. HOLY CRAP!

The witheringly intelligent DAN IN PROVIDENCE has brought us all to the brink. THANKS Dan! Now who will push Gary over the top?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Gary:

ANOTHER PLEDGE THANKS to DAN in Providence! We are 33 cents -- three dimes and three pennies -- from hitting the goal!
  9:24pm
anonymous party:

Hey... i gave my 33 bucks, but it's still at 99 percent.

What gives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Gary:

Anonymous Party, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Doug Schulkind:

@anonymous party
Because the official amount required to hit 100% was $33.33. The pledge widget thingy only shows round numbers. Sorry for the confusion.
  9:26pm

Had i known, i would have made it an even $33.33.

A near palindrome.
