My friend Lucas' mom delivered that line, "I'll have what she's having." (which was quoted in this song or sound collage or whatever you call this)

Is this the countdown to 96.3?

Fleep, What happens at 96.3?

rw, there was a tweet from @WFMU about it

Maybe robots like music too?

The station already shifted, but I heard the female robovoice two days ago, just her and silent pauses, all the other sound was mixed in by Fatal Predictions.

Jeff:

What would you call this type of music? (Nord "Side A")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am
jj.:

ha, yeah, i recorded a bit of the voice off the air before it disappeared. and those were my mixes, mostly. only a little bit of fatal predictions!

Ike:

That's called "stunting" -- it's a time-honored radio industry trick for getting free press and attention when about to change a station's format. Kudos to them for coming up w/a new stunting trick and not just playing a single song repeatedly for three days or just a straight countdown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am
jj.:

to perhaps clarify, this is the a side of the nord LP mixed with both sides of the saunier/chippendale drums tape.

jj, I swim corrected!

nice one, ike! i didn't realize it had a name. there's no way the new format will be better than the femmebot, alas.

Jeff:

Whoa, late night.

JakeGould:

Fleep, are you swimming in relatively warm water?
Avatar 1:17am
Ike:

In NYC in the 90s, a big station stunted w/awful Broadway musical junk for a few days before switching to adult contemp. or something boring like that. At least B'way horseshit was different. The problem w/there is that some people might like it & think it's the real new format & get pissed off when it goes away, which is what happened. So stunting tends to go more avant-garde so no mass audiences will get too into it or think it's a real format.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am
jj.:

i've heard of stations playing, like, all-beyonce during their changeover or something like that. what're some other avant-stunting examples, ike?
  1:19am
Jeff:

Sounds like supplying a buffer amidst what may still possibly be interpreted as a breath of fresh air to spike the listeners interest ;D !
Avatar 1:22am
fleep:

Jake, ocean temp here is 60 F, so yeah, and it hit 80 for the earthbound today.
Avatar 1:26am
Ike:

Hmm, maybe "avant" was overstating it... usually it's something much less interesting than Minnesota's robo-femme, often involving a sort-of ominous ticking clock....

Does Wiki know stunting? Yes it does en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
jj.:

granted, i've only ever heard about a few examples of stunting, but seems like the idea of using a text generator is pretty new. the countdown definitely had some repeat entertainment value. we tuned in a few times over the past few days to see if anything had changed or if it'd gone sentient or something.

When I listened to WBAI a few years back, the folks at 2600 (“Off the Hook”) took advantage of people’s fears of the station being sold with a very well made “99.5 All Country” stunt. It was described as a “10,000 song country marathon…” www.2600.com...

I started wfmu on my phone before shutting off my computer, then got distracted & didn't turn off my computer & so had two slightly not-synced frow show streams playing simultaneously. Definitely recommended!
