Hi all on this unnamed carnival monday

Our neck of the woods is getting its first proper snowfall of the winter, perhaps even a whopping 5"-6" when it's all over. So, of course, there is a local hysteria interrupting all media to claim a state of emergency. Can only imagine how the February sweeps fear mongers are doling it out up New England way.

Layered like a cake, here, in wool, fleece.and warm blood shaken up periodically for kicks and more warmth..

Pretty sure I heard 'coldest on record' in the news.

Hey Kat330 and Doca! Glad to have you here with us!

Being in NC, I totally understand crazy snow hysteria, Kat330. Everything shuts down here at the thought of it.

Hey TRS! Hope the music warms things up a bit.

Hi, Jeff J! Guess I never realized you are in NC. Asheville area? We spent some great vacation time there a couple summers back.

Doug - one of ours, too! So many of those JCOA albums are top notch.

Hey Listener James! Glad to have you here. Good luck with the work.

It was -6°F here this morning. School was cancelled. My Chicago-born wife is just hooting that the absurdity.

Hey Kat330 - I'm in Charlotte. A couple of hours from Asheville, which is a lovely town for sure.

@Doug: Yes, and with my husband from Finland, the absurdity is tripled. He went in to his office early today because he figures they'll close up early and force everyone to go home (without pay, of course).

the reason they cancel school, especially in rural areas, is because they don't want the kiddies freezing to death while waiting for a bus which may never show up.

The caption for that one is: "I just want to apologize beforehand if you miss." Not only is there an obvious spelling error in it, the notion all Canadians are super kind has been dispelled by your wry presence over the years here. ;)

Hey, guys, let me ask you something: is NYC too expensive on a day to day basis as a tourist? Like how much money would I usually spend getting around, seeing things and eating?
Avatar 12:48pm

@duke: Yes, that rolling, rambling sort of rhythm.

The cartoonist really should have spelled it "apologise" though. Wonder if some over-eager copy editor did that -- or spell check.
Avatar 🥁 12:54pm
duke:

@doca a lot depends on what you want to eat and what you want to see. You can get good food cheaply if you stay away from fancy places. Hotel accommodations in NYC tend to be higher than most places. Lonely Planet gives a good breakdown www.lonelyplanet.com...

re NYC visit: Met Museum's suggested donation is $25. They will, however, accept any amount,
Avatar 1:00pm
kat330:

Really? Hm, wonder then why I've seen British spellings used routinely up in the north country?
Avatar 1:00pm
doca:

@Dean: wow I know this place! I guess it's better if I don't visit it.
@Duke: Thanks! I'm expecting to eat a lot on the street and I'm going to visit a friend, so accommodations won't (I hope) be a big issue. I'm asking because I was waiting for dollar price to go down, but it isn't. Also, I "coincidentally" booked my trip at around the record fair, so I'll probably need to bring extra money for it.
Avatar 1:01pm
glenn:

Apologise vs. apologize
Apologize is the preferred spelling in American and Canadian English, and apologise is preferred in varieties of English from outside North America. This is the case despite the fact that apologize is the original form and was once standard even in British English (and is still used by some British publishers).

Traditionally, verbs whose roots have origins in Greek take the -ize suffix, and apology is of Greek origin, so it took -ize when it first came to English in the 16th century. Apologise emerged as a variant fairly early in the word’s history, but it only recently became the preferred spelling outside North America, possibly due to a mistaken belief that apologize is the American spelling and hence to be avoided. A similar trend has guided the recent evolution of the traditional realize into the newer realise in varieties of English from outside North America.

kat330:

Re: the mic break comments: Funny, I was just thinking how much better some of the tracks in that set would have sounded with female vocals (esp. the Jansch).
Avatar 1:26pm
Jeff J:

Kat330 - Jansch's vocal on the original 1966 version is more effective, I'd say. And hey, we did spare you Robbie Basho's vocals!
Avatar 1:26pm
doca:

@LJFW: That's good to know. Obviously I dream of LPs, but I think my money should go first into food and getting to know the city (should it? really?). I need to make a median estimate of my expenses, which will obviously be blown away at first minute. But thanks!
Avatar 1:28pm
kat330:

@Jeff J: Ha! I'm still trying to understand why pretty women's voices are dubbed "twee," yet Tim or Jeff Buckley's far less likely to be described that way. Or Rufus Wainwright -- I mean, how "twee" can you get?
Avatar 1:29pm
doca:

I've just seen that Lotte Anker also released a squid-named album, "Squid police". I'm wondering whats the meaning of the combination between new jazz and squids.
Avatar 1:30pm
Jeff J:

Fair point, for sure. I don't think Vashti's singing is twee as much as the instrumentation on that record. Lots of twee male singers for sure, as you note. And twee not necessarily a knock, of course.
Avatar 1:30pm
Jeff J:

@Doca - Squid Police was a cult comic book series from the 1980s. Maybe a reference to that?
Avatar 1:32pm
doca:

@Jeff J: Really? Maybe!
Avatar 1:32pm
kat330:

Well, Jeff G made it sound like a knock. :) If about the instrumentation, yes, then, I get very annoyed with over sentimentality in arrangements, especially violins.
