Listener ausmanx is probably asleep now (it's 2:36am in Sydney), but just about 3 hours ago, he made the pledge that put WFMU over the top! Thanks, ausmanx, and thanks everyone!!

Give the Drummer Radio is about $500 from reaching $30,000 for the 2015 Marathon. Needless to say, this is an all-time best! Thanks for helping out and making us tremendously happy and gratified!

Heya, JtotheK!!

Tony Coulter:

Just occurred to me that there were two similarly named British experimental / post-punk groups releasing music at the same time during the early '80s: Two Daughters and Deux Filles. Don't think they were related, though!
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

What Doug said ... and some!!!

The Two Daughters cassette on now is the one with a photo of two figures (in the pic above the playlist, I mean).

there's a Zwei Himmlische Toechter outfit out of Germany, but I think you'll find it's a TV show with slightly different aesthetics...

this is lovely, Tony. A friend of mine posted this cassette on a blog of his some seven years ago. Haven't heard it since.

Their LP is also really good.
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: What blog was that?
  12:17pm

@Tony - well he took it down, by the looks of it. Had a lot of things in this vein.

Free trip to Marineville to anyone who can ID the LP underneath today's cassettes. I'll even give you a clue: It's related to the band Utopia.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Mark!

I used to avoid playing tapes on this show that had been blogged. Then I decided that since so many links are short-lived, I'd just play 'em regardless.

Glad to meat you, you nut! (Hola, Glenn!)
  12:24pm
Mark Williams:

your decision was a good one, Tony. Shame they can't be archived, but still.
Avatar 12:26pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah -- the non-archiving is not my idea. One way around the problem I've thought of, but so far rejected, is to only play one side of a tape -- then I could archive these shows. I MAY start doing that at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Uncle Michael:

Can you do one side on one show and the other side on a different show??
Avatar 12:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Probably! (You have a tricky legalistic mind, I see!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm

The urgent double-question-marks were really just a typo. I'm not that wound up yet.

so many memories come to me when I hear sounds like this from that era. It was a period of mysterious discoveries, one more elusively unknown than the next. Is it my internal date stamp that still makes them sound that way to me now? Other musical interests from my youthful past have started to age and sag quite easily.

Avatar 12:58pm

@ Mark: I suspect some of this stuff that was so obscure back when it came out still sounds fresh because it was more personal in approach and never got assimilated.

@Tony - I tend to agree with that.

And here we go with some timeless "corrosive boredom" (aetzender Langeweile)!

Tony, I think you're conflating your slashers.
Avatar 1:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Here's the proper cover for this Elektrozange tape: www.discogs.com...

My cover sort of fell part (the glued-on white bits fell off the piece of black paper), so I photographed the insert instead.

Mark Williams:

oh, an ADN cassette! I have but the one. Was it quality under one roof with them, Tony?

All that I've heard are excellent, for sure. The Comelade thing I'm playing next is also on ADN.

Hey, βrian!

I think of our car as a giant cassette player.
Avatar 1:18pm

Not that I play Tape Hiss cassettes in it. The car is for 50 cent Heart cassettes and such.
  1:19pm
Dean:

50 Cent and Heart made a cassette together with Screaming Lord Such?
  1:20pm

it's when you go jive talking down the street with your boombox, that's when you pull out the Elektrozange, right Tony?
Avatar 1:21pm
βrian:

I still have a very foggy copy of 'The Clash' I could play.
Avatar 1:21pm

Hey, Dean!

@ Mark: I did once try walking down the street with a boombox playing experimental music. The problem was, it was too damn quiet.
Avatar 1:21pm

V Priceless:

Wow - I remember hearing Pascal Comelade back in the early 80's on WNYC's 'New Sounds', and writing down his name (FMU was not an easy signal to secure back then - 'New Sounds' was my go-to back in the day. Much respect for Mr. Schaefer).
  1:38pm
Dean:

A Portland question, sort of: I just learned yesterday that the headquarters of a tube amplifier manufacturer, Whammerdyne, are on Alberta NE. My in-laws live walking distance from this neighborhood. Any idea what these things cost?
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

John Schaefer's "New Sounds" book is worth tracking down too. It's in a shelf nearby, in fact.
Avatar 1:39pm

@ Dean: No idea, no. Sorry!
Avatar 1:39pm
V Priceless:

William Duckworth's Talking Music is a good read, too.
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

I can recommend a good place to get donuts on NE Alberta, though.
Avatar 1:40pm
βrian:

The internet is a series of tube amplifiers, I read.
  1:41pm
Dean:

I've probably been to that donut shop.

I'm actually a solid state kinda guy, but those Whammerdyne's look awesome. And hi-fi really is all about how the gear looks, right?
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Also, who can resist a name like Whammerdyne? Wham, Bam, Whammerdyne.
  1:47pm
Mark Williams:

Wham, Bam, $13,000 Ma'am.
  1:47pm
Mark Williams:

or Sir...
Avatar 1:47pm
V Priceless:

@ Dean: I'd be cautious. With a name like that, you could be headed to Looney Tunes territory!
  1:49pm
Dean:

For reals? Yeah, I kinda figured as much. Truth be told, this is on the low end of the range of gear I am hoping to sell my various limbs and, if need be, children, to acquire. Th-th-th-that's all, folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Once you squeeze the Internet out of the tube amplifiers, there's no squeezing it back.
