This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

This evening's recommended drink is the Jungle Bird:
Jungle Bird (Aviary Bar, Kuala Lumpur Hilton, c. 1978)
3/4 oz. Campari
1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. sugar syrup
4 oz. unsweetened pineapple juice
1 1/2 oz. dark Jamaican rum

Hey bob, WD! Birds in hand?

Hey Gary, thanks for stopping back by last week's Donovan show. I was so glad to hear you could dig it.

This image up here is from Zuber's scenic/panoramic wallpaper, "Vues de Bresil." Can you imagine having this thing on your walls, IN YOUR HOUSE?
Avatar 7:10pm
Flash Strap:

This right here is, in my opinion, one of the best Exotica tracks that ever was or shall be

There a large city map on my office's wall. It doesn't cover the whole wall but was pretty expensive. I'd love to have some panorama in the frieze-type section of my recessed kitchen ceiling.

Man, me too.

It feels like everyone has had one too many birds already, haha.

I made Jungle Bird cocktails a couple weeks ago. Those are tasty.

Hawaii here I come! The vocals make me feel like I'm about to meet Kirk.
Avatar 7:45pm
Flash Strap:

Glad to hear it, Hyde. I do tend to favor a coconut-creamy tiki cocktail, but the dark rum/campari of the Jungle Bird makes it my favorite, most sensible drink. For getting my head together, rather than melting it down.

There is something more Star Trek than usual about The Surfmen's blend of exotica.
Avatar 7:53pm

I love this record, but boy does Kenny not really "get" Moondog

excellent first hour Evan! catch the rest on the rarchive

Thanks bob, see ya!
Avatar 7:59pm

I like the Star Trekiness of them. Reminds me a little of the episode "The Way to Eden" when Spock goes all beat jazz on the Vulcan lute.
Avatar 8:03pm
Flash Strap:

Yes. Is that the one where Uhura sings that demented torch song in the ship lounge?
Avatar 8:06pm
northguineahills:

I believe Martin Denny also did a version of "Forbidden Island".
Avatar 8:07pm
Walking Daydream:

Charlie X is the episode you're thinking of, I believe.
Avatar 8:08pm
Flash Strap:

I think so too. He definitely had a record by that name. I'd have to double-check that it's actually the same composition, but it almost certainly would be. Also, Hi, NGH!
Avatar 8:18pm
Flash Strap:

@WD: you're right. Similar music, different episode. Two awesome scenes.
Avatar 8:27pm

I hope I didn't drive you all away with my absurd "Judge-from-My-Cousin-Vinnie" "accent"

The only reason I know is b/c I have the album and Kid Koala also used it as a sample.

Going just a tad long tonight. But not and hour and a half long like last week. Hang with me, pallies

I'm definitely revisiting this show at work tomorrow. Yannick Dauby's frogs croaked in one of your shows and it caused quite the stir. Definitely some good beats I may want to pick out here.
Avatar 9:05pm

That Dauby collection is really something, isn't it?
