Favoriting May 13, 2015: Celebrating FM 106.3, WHTG ("Modern Rock At The Jersey Shore) and station owner Faye Gade

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

From 1984 until 2000 New Jersey was the home of one of the most respected and beloved commercial rock radio stations in the country, WHTG-FM (aka FM 106.3). The station broadcast from a house in Asbury Park NJ where the station's owner, the late Faye Gade, also lived. There weren't many radio stations playing "modern rock" or "alternative" music at the time, nor were there many stations owned by women. Gade played a key role in nurturing the station's independence and giving DJs an unusual amount of freedom for a commercial radio station, which led to a loyal and devoted listenership.

Faye Gade passed away earlier this year, so to celebrate her memory and the legacy of WHTG Evan will be joined in the studio tonight by former WHTG staffers Jerry Rubino and Neal Adams (Neal is also a former WFMU DJ). Throughout the night they'll be talking with other past FM 106.3 DJs and, more importantly, playing some of the music that made the station stand out among its peers.

Coincidentally there is also a WHTG Reunion Concert happening this Friday, May 15, at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park. Richard Barone and Jeffrey Gaines will be appearing along with several other bands - check the Facebook invite for more details or visit the Wonder Bar website for more info. The show is a benefit for Jewish Family & Children's Services of Greater Monmouth County, Faye Gade's favorite charity.

Living in CT, I'd never heard (of) WHTG, but I think I'm gonna dig this. And this Saints elpee is a lost mid-80s classic. As good as anything from the early years.

What luck for me! I get home, flip on the TV and "Office Space" is on. Flip on the radio and EFD is on. Next on the agenda is to see what's the hockey score and root up something to eat. Looking forward to the WHTG stories.

I remember this "Gettysburg" song. Never knew it was The Brandos that played it, though.

Cool that she mentioned WBJB because it has an HD2/streaming service called Altrok. It's very much what HTG would sound like today (as a non-comm) if it had a reasonably wide-ranging playlist and lots of new stuff.

That Altrok stream is programmed by WHTG Alum Sean Carolan, and several ex-HTGers are on the main station.

Right, Sean Carolan! Plus I forgot to say, lately Altrok has lots of HUMAN DJs, not just Sean but several others -- very rare for an HD2/streaming operation.
