Heya, PS Simon and General MacCarmichael!!

So, PS Simon: You showed up more than 8 hours early? Impressive.
Avatar 11:54am
Tony Coulter:

Sorry for the poor quality of today's playlist photo. It was taken in dim light.

I remember Surplus Stock. I remember them being good, too.
Avatar 12:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, JtotheK!
Avatar 12:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Surplus Stock's "Let's Kill Each Other" is an all-time classic. Has gotten a fair amount of play on FMU over the years.
Avatar 12:10pm
Cecile:

I remember hearing them on WCBN, too in the 80s
  12:14pm
Dean:

Are Tape Hiss programs played back on a cassette player, or do you digitize them for airing? In any event, which cassette player do you use?
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!

I burn the cassettes to CD-R first before every show. That way you don't have to wait for me to rewind and cue up a side. Plus, I like having them digitized.

I'm using a very unfancy Tascam deck -- a 202 mkv.

By which I mean I'm strapped into my chair, drunk.

And, of course, Ptôse are the French Residents....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Jeff Golick:

@pacificstandardsimon: I love your image today.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Talking of CD-Rs and cassettes: This cassette is 31 years old. I seriously doubt that the CD-R copy I made of it yesterday will still play in 31 years.
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

I've had loads of CD-Rs crap out on me after a couple of years, even though they are completely unscratched.
Avatar 12:35pm
V Priceless:

@ TC re: BPA: yeah, sonically & topically!

that's a drag about the CD-Rs
  12:37pm
Dean:

Perfect sound forever.

I have replaced dozens of my commercial CDs pressed at the PDO plant in England during the late '80s and early '90s. They were defectively manufactured, resulting in bronzing. Fortunately, PDO replaced them free of charge.
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

One thing about these older cassette-only releases: They almost never show up second-hand in used record stores, for some reason. The good ones, anyway....
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Part of it, of course, is that they were usually very limited runs. Still....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
pacific standard simon:

@Tony Coulter @11:53 Good morning -- I knew I was very likely to wake late today, so put my two cents in ahead of time.

@Jeff Golick @12:30 Me too -- found it on one of those massive animated gif sites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
pacific standard simon:

I have a tape-to-USB deck (made by Grace -- never heard of them) which I seldom use, despite having bought it to convert the four boxes of Over The Edge and Subgenius radio programs I taped of KPFA in the '80s & '90s.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Merzbow sure sounded different back in '83, no?
Avatar 1:09pm

I kind of like them better!

Me too, actually.

OK, back to the desk and, therefore, the music. Richard Pinhas, eh? He's a favorite on the FMU, methinks.
Avatar 1:35pm

Heya, Carmichael! Welcome back to the desk that never ends.

btw, the cover art for this "Fragment 1" comp is by Jad Fair.

this reminds me of Kurt Schwitter's Ursonate
Avatar 1:44pm

Pigs alway come running when you perform the Ursonate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm

I once told my art history instructor that Schwitters had been rendered obsolete by "Surfin' Bird" -- what cheek!
  1:46pm
Dean:

Schwitters was a bit of a ham.
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

This comp is commendably freeform.

The last two tracks were out of order on the cassette's tracklist (I swear!) -- but I just righted things.

No relation, I take it, to the Palinckx who recorded on Victo?

In fact -- it is them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm

Greets Peeps!

Wow. And them again, evidently. I might have heard them live at Victo, late '90s. Can't remember...

Hey Tony, fascinating tape! Sorry I missed the beginning...
Avatar 2:31pm

Hey Dave! Yeah, the way it's all over the place feels much more like a freeform radio show than a typical comp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Jeff Golick:

This is great stuff.
  2:34pm
Dean:

Yeah, I heard them in 2000: http://fimav.qc.ca/en/archives/fimav-2000/

That closing show with Oswald/Plimley, Crispell, and Cecil Taylor, was a doozy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

Though I think I prefer Palinckx.

FMU-related factoid: Pseu Braun has recorded with Smersh (she's not on this tape, though).

neat, TC! Was it a CIAJ-Smersh mash-up?
Avatar 2:44pm

Nope, just Pseu guesting with the Smersh folks.

She's on this LP: www.discogs.com...
